The Northern People's Party (NPP) was a political party in the Gold Coast which aimed to protect the interests of those in the Northern region of Ghana.

It is located in the north of the country and was the largest of the sixteen regions, covering an area of 70,384 square kilometres or 31 percent of Ghana's area until December 2018 when the Savannah and North East Regions were created from it. The NPP's leader was Simon Diedong Dombo, the traditional chief of Duori in the Upper Region. Formed in 1954, the party contested the 1954 election and the 1956 election. In November 1957 it merged with other opposition parties against the Convention People's Party to form the United Party. [1]

Simon Diedong Dombo (1925–1998) was a Ghanaian politician, teacher and king. He was a Member of Parliament and the Parliamentary Leader during the first Republic of Ghana. As the Douri-Na, he was reputed to be the first educated chieftain in the Upper Region of Ghana. He was one of the founders of the Northern People's Party. This later merged with the United Party. During the Second Republic, he was a member of the ruling Progress Party. He was Minister for Health and then Minister for Interior in the Busia government. He had more than 30 children.

Convention Peoples Party political party

The Convention People's Party is a socialist political party in Ghana based on the ideas of the first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah.

The United Party was the main opposition party in the First Republic of Ghana. It was the only opposition party throughout its existence from 1957 until 1964 when Ghana became a one party state.

Founding members of the party also included Mumuni Bawumia, J.A. Braimah, Tolon Naa Yakubu Tali, Adam Amandi, Naa Abeifaa Karbo, Imoru Salifu and C.K. Tedam. [2]

Kabachewura Alhaji Alhassan J. Braimah was a Ghanaian politician, author, chief of Kabuche and founding member of the Northern People's Party.

Tolon Naa Alhaji Yakubu Alhassan Tali was a Ghanaian politician, King of Tolon and founding member of the Northern People's Party.

2004 Ghanaian general election

General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2004. The presidential elections resulted in a victory for incumbent John Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The parliamentary elections saw the NPP win 128 of the 230 seats.
