Northpark Mall is a super regional mall located in Joplin, Missouri. The mall opened in 1972 with 600,000 square feet, and featured 60 stores, restaurants, and other services. Today, the Northpark mall is 1,080,000 square feet, and features more than 100 inline tenants including a food court. Northpark Mall is the largest mall in the Joplin region and serves a trade area of nearly 500,000 people. Freeman hospital added a soft play area in the Macy's women's court in the summer of 2014. The mall was also the temporary home of the 11th and 12th grades of Joplin High School until August 2014, when the new high school was completed. Northpark Mall is managed by CBL & Associates Properties. The anchor stores are Vintage Stock, TJ Maxx, H&M, JCPenney, and Dunham's Sports. There are three vacant anchor stores that were once two Macy's stores and Sears.
Northpark Mall opened in 1972, [2] on Range Line Road on the east side of Joplin. At the time, the mall was anchored by Montgomery Ward to the north, JCPenney to the south, and local chain Newman's at the middle. Other stores included Walgreens, McCrory's, Ramsay's Department Store, For All Bible (which moved out in 2016, and permanently closed the next year), Wyatt's cafeteria, as well as many other stores. Newman's became Heer's in 1987, the same year that a new wing was built, and the mall received its first renovation. The new wing extended easterly from the JCPenney store. This new wing included two new anchors, Famous-Barr and Venture. [3] The renovation also brought a food court as well as a new five screen cinema. In 1994, Heer's closed, and Famous-Barr moved its men's wear and home goods to the former Heer's space. That same year, Sears built a store adjacent to Montgomery Ward, moving from an older store near downtown Joplin. In 1998, the mall received a minor renovation, changing only the color scheme. After the closure of the Venture chain in 1998, its anchor at the mall was converted to Shopko, but it closed in the early 2000s following the closure of Montgomery Ward in 2001. Both Famous-Barr locations were rebranded as Macy's in 2006. Montgomery Ward remained vacant until mid-2007, when its space was split between TJ Maxx and Steve & Barry's, [4] the latter of which closed in 2008 and was replaced by Vintage Stock. In 2006, the mall received its first major renovation in nearly 20 years, changing the color scheme, adding all new lighting and floor tiles, and renovating the food court to a route 66 theme. [5]
In 2012, Old Navy moved into a space formerly occupied by Tilt Studios. As a result, the original Old Navy became Jo-Ann Fabrics, and Tilt opened a larger location near Vintage Stock, and Ulta Beauty opened a store off the food court. In the summer of 2014, a soft play area for children was added in the Macy's women's court. [6]
In August 2015, mall management announced that the former Venture was being converted back to retail use. That work was completed by late September 2015. Joplin High School used the building as a temporary school until May 2014.
In October 2015, Macy's moved the children's department to the men's store and men's moved over to the women's store. Both Macy's stores received a much needed makeover, including new fixtures, fresh paint, and new carpet.
For-All Bible announced in December 2015 that they would be moving to a new location out of the mall. For-All Bible was one of the last original tenants, until they permanently closed in 2017, leaving JCPenney as the only remaining original tenant in the mall.
Mall management announced in May 2016 that Dunham's Sports would be opening in the former Venture anchor. The store was working on renovations and plans to be open by fall 2016. With the opening of Dunham's, the mall would have all of the anchor spaces full for the first time in 15 years.
In November 2017, Swedish retailer H&M opened their first store in southwest Missouri. [7]
On November 7, 2019, it was announced that Sears would be closing this location a part of a plan to close 96 stores nationwide. The store permanently closed in February 2020. [8]
On January 6, 2021, it was announced that Macy's would also be closing both locations in April 2021 as part of a plan to close 46 stores nationwide. [9] After the stores closed, TJ Maxx, JCPenney, and Dunham's Sports would be the only traditional anchor stores left.
Following the 2011 Joplin tornado which destroyed Joplin High School, officials said juniors and seniors in the 2011-12 class would attend classes in a section of the mall. [10] [11] Classes began in the renovated former Shopko location on August 17, 2011. [12] Joplin High School moved into their new building in August 2014.
Ross Park Mall is a shopping mall located in Ross Township, Pennsylvania, north of Pittsburgh. The mall features JCPenney, Macy's, Nordstrom, and Dick's House of Sports.
Battlefield Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Springfield, Missouri. Opened in 1970, the mall features 153 stores in 1,202,116 square feet (111,680.2 m2) of mall shop space. KBTV-TV, the Beaumont-Port Arthur Fox affiliate, used to broadcast inside the mall, but now broadcasts at the KFDM studios. In addition, a Tilt Studio location opened in early 2017. Former anchors, Stage and Sears both closed in 2020. The Stage closed due to bankruptcy, and the Sears due to company downsizing.
Charleston Town Center is an enclosed shopping mall in downtown Charleston, West Virginia. One of the largest enclosed malls in the United States to be located in a downtown shopping district, it has comprised more than 130 tenants on two levels at its peak, in addition to food court on a partial third level. Several vacancies in later years have led to conversion of large portions into office space. Popular full-service restaurants include Chili's Bar & Grill, the Chop House, Outback Steakhouse and Tidewater Grill. The only remaining anchor store is JCPenney. The mall is owned by Hull Property Group.
University Mall is a shopping mall in Carbondale, Illinois, United States. Opened in 1974, it originally featured JCPenney and Sears as its major anchor stores, the latter taking the place of a Britt's discount store which never opened for business. The mall received multiple expansions in the 1980s and 1990s, adding Meis, Venture Stores, and Famous-Barr. Sears moved to the then Illinois Centre Mall and was replaced by Montgomery Ward. Venture, Elder-Beerman, and Montgomery Ward all closed throughout the 1990s, with the former becoming K's Merchandise Mart until 2007, while Famous-Barr became Macy's in 2006. The mall has seen several closures in stores throughout the 21st century, including both Macy's and JCPenney. The remaining mall tenants include Ross Dress for Less, Ulta Beauty, Old Navy, Bed Bath & Beyond (closing), Illinicare Health, and SIH Medical Group. University Mall is managed by Namdar Realty Group.
Nittany Mall is an enclosed regional shopping mall in State College, Pennsylvania. It is located at the intersections of Route 150 and Route 26, one mile off the I-99 corridor. It is uniquely situated within four miles of the Pennsylvania State University, allowing the mall to attract both area residents as well as college students. Current anchor stores are Dunham's Sports, Gabe's and Rural King.
South County Center is a shopping mall located in Mehlville, Missouri, at the intersection between Interstate 55, Interstate 255, and U.S. Route 50. It opened on October 17, 1963 and was designed by Victor Gruen. it included a dome-roofed Famous-Barr, which became Macy's in 2006, a National Supermarket occupying the basement floor, which closed in 1973, and later JCPenney as anchors. Stix, Baer & Fuller,, was added in 1973 along with a new wing of stores. A Sears, a food court, and additional mall stores were added in 2001. In 2004, Several stores and restaurants were added that could be accessed from outside the mall including Qdoba, Applebee's, Noodle's and Company, and Border's. The anchor stores are Macy's, Dillard's, and JCPenney.
Sandusky Mall is an indoor shopping center located in Perkins Township, south of Sandusky, Ohio. It is located on the east side of US Route 250, north of I-80/I-90 and Ohio State Route 2. It is the only major shopping center within 45 miles (72 km). It comprises more than 70 stores; the anchor stores are TJ Maxx, JCPenney, Books-A-Million, Dewey Furniture, Five Below, and Ross. Alton Square Mall is a 634,181 square feet (58,917.3 m2) shopping mall located in Alton, Illinois. Its anchor store is JCPenney. A second anchor structure formerly housed a Sears, and currently houses an eight screen NCG Cinemas theater, while a third anchor structure, housing a Macy's, was demolished in 2017.
