Novellist is an Irish-bred, German-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won major races in four countries including the Gran Premio del Jockey Club in Italy, the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in France, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the United Kingdom and the Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany. He was rated the fifth-best racehorse in the world and was voted German Horse of the Year for his performances in 2013.

Background

Novellist is a dark bay or brown horse with a white snip and three white socks bred in Ireland by his owner Christoph Berglar. He was sired by Monsun (1990–2012), a dual winner of the Preis von Europa who went on to become a highly successful breeding stallion. His other progeny include Manduro, Stacelita and Shirocco. [2] Novellist's dam Night Lagoon won the Preis der Winterkönigin in 2003.

The colt was sent into training with Andreas Wohler at Ravensberg, between Dortmund and Hanover. [3] In his early races Novellist was ridden by the Panamanian jockey Eduardo Pedroza.

Racing career

2011: two-year-old season

On his only appearance as a two-year-old, Novellist contested a minor race over 1500 metres at Düsseldorf and won by eight lengths from five opponents. [4]

2012: three-year-old season

Novellist made his three-year-old debut over 1600 metres at Hoppegarten. He started at odds of 1/5 in a field of nine and won by five lengths. On 6 May he was moved up in class for the Group Three Frühjahrs Dreijährigen-Preis over 2000 metres at Frankfurt. Pedroza restrained the colt at the back of the field before moving up to challenge for the lead in the straight. He took the lead 300 metres from the finish and accelerated clear of his opponents to win by six lengths. [5]

On 10 June, Novellist was moved up to Group Two class for the Union-Rennen over 2200 metre at Cologne. In a repeat of his tactics at Frankfurt, Pedroza held up the colt among the backmarkers before moving forward in the straight. In the closing stages he broke clear of the field and won in "very impressive" style by five lengths. [6] On 2 July Novellist started 4/6 favourite for the Group One Deutsches Derby at Hamburg. He took the lead inside the last 100 metres but was overtaken and beaten half a length by the 25/1 outsider Pastorius. Wohler said afterwards: "Novellist ran a good race, but he was a bit phlegmatic today", while Berglar, said: "That's racing!". [7]

After a two-month break, Novellist was matched against older horses for the first time in the Grosser Preis von Baden. Ridden by the British-based Norwegian-born jockey William Buick, [8] he finished fourth of the seven runners behind Danedream, Ovambo Queen and Pastorius. On his final start of the season, Novellist was sent to Italy to contest the Gran Premio del Jockey Club over 2400 metres in Milan. He started 8/13 favourite and won easily by four and a half lengths from the Australian-bred Retrieve. [9] [10]

2013: four-year-old season

Novellist made his first appearance as a four-year-old in the Grosser Preis der Badischen Unternehmen over 2200 metres at Baden-Baden on 12 May. He won by a head from the 2011 Deutsches Derby winner Waldpark, to whom he was conceding six pounds. [11]

On 23 June, Novellist was sent to France for the Group One Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Ridden by Ryan Moore he took the lead 400 metres from the finish and won by one and a quarter lengths from Dunaden, with the favourite Cirrus des Aigles in fifth place. [12] Commenting on his colt's victory, Wohler said: "That was great. He had a perfect run round and Ryan even said he got to the front a little bit too soon. Even though he was in front sooner than he wanted to be, he finished well and we are very happy." [13]

Novellist was then sent to the United Kingdom to contest Britain's most prestigious weight-for-age race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over one and a half miles at Ascot Racecourse. The colt was racing on firm ground for the first time but Wohler had no doubts about Novellist's ability to cope, saying: "He is a very good-moving horse, and his action was impressive in the gallop. If the ground is fast on Saturday, that is not really a concern. I expect him to run well". [3] He was ridden by the veteran Irish jockey Johnny Murtagh after Ryan Moore was claimed to ride the three-year-old Hillstar. [14] Novellist the 13/2 fourth choice in the betting behind Cirrus des Aigles, Trading Leather and Hillstar. He was settled in fourth place as fast pace was set by Ektihaam and Universal, before moving up to take the lead in the straight. He accelerated clear of the field and won easily by five lengths from Trading Leather in a course record time of 2:24.6. [15] The win was the second successive win in the race for Germany, following Danedream in 2012. After the race Wohler said "I used to come to Ascot to watch the King George as a kid on my holidays, now I'm here winning it. One of our strengths is we have horses who mature later and when stepped up in distance. I was confident as I knew he had improved since his last race but I didn't expect him to win by five lengths." [16] Wohler went on to indicate that the colt would next appear in the Grosser Preis von Baden before running in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. [14] Murtagh called the winner "a very high-class horse with a good engine" and said that his only difficulty came when attempting to pull the horse up after crossing the finish line. [17]

Novellist reappeared in the Grosser Preis von Baden on 1 September and started the 3/10 favourite against four opponents. He led from the start and pulled had against Pedroza's efforts to restrain him before he was overtaken by his stable companion Seismos at half way. He regained the lead from Seismos inside the last 200 metres to win by three-quarter of a length. Novellist was strongly fancied for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, but was ruled out on the day before the race when he was found to be running an abnormally high temperature. [18]

Stud career

Novellist was retired from racing in October 2013 and was sold to the Shadai Corporation, [19] and stood at the Shadai Stallion Station in Hokkaido, Japan from 2014 to 2021, [20] when he was moved to Lex Stud  [ ja ]. [21] As of January 2024, Novellist's most successful progenies are Last Draft  [ ja ], who won the Keisei Hai in 2019, [22] and Breakup  [ ja ], who won the 2022 Copa Republica Argentina. [23]

On December 2023, Novellist was retired from stud duty and was pensioned at the Yogibo Versailles Resort Farm  [ ja ]. [24]

Assessment

In the 2012 edition of the World Thoroughbred Rankings, Novellist was given a rating of 118, making him the 89th best racehorse in the world and the fourth best three-year-old colt trained in Europe behind Camelot, Pastorius and Encke. [25] In the 2013 edition of the rankings, Novellist was rated the best four-year-old in the world, the best male horse in Europe and the fifth-best horse of any age or sex behind Black Caviar, Treve, Wise Dan and Orfevre. [26]

He was voted German Horse of the Year for 2013, taking 49% of the vote ahead of Lucky Speed (30%) and Neatico (21%). [27]

Nathaniel is an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. Nathaniel failed to win in two races as a two-year-old but attracted attention by running Frankel to half a length at Newmarket. At three he recorded his first major win in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot and then won Britain's most prestigious all-aged race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over the same course and distance. Danedream was a German Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2011 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in race record time. She is one of only three German trained horses to win the Arc, the others being Star Appeal in 1975 and Torquator Tasso in 2021. In November 2011 she became the first German-trained horse to win a Cartier Racing Award.

Moon Madness, was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career which lasted from September 1985 until November 1988, he ran twenty-four times and won ten races. He recorded his most important success when winning the Classic St. Leger Stakes as a three-year-old in 1986, the same year in which he also won the King George V Stakes, and the Scottish Derby. He continued to race for the next two seasons in major middle-distance and staying races, with his victories including the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, the Geoffrey Freer Stakes the Cumberland Lodge Stakes and the Yorkshire Cup. He later stood as a stallion in Europe and Japan.

Carroll House was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from September 1987 until July 1990 he raced twenty times in six countries and won seven races. His most important win came in October 1989 when he won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris. His other wins included the Phoenix Champion Stakes, Grosser Preis von Baden, Princess of Wales's Stakes, Furstenberg Rennen and Welsh Derby. At the end of his racing career he was retired to become a breeding stallion in Japan and Ireland but had little success as a sire of winners.

Glint of Gold was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. A middle-distance specialist, he was noted for his toughness and consistency, winning ten races, finishing second six times and third once in a seventeen race career which lasted from July 1980 until September 1982. He won races in four countries including six at Group One level. His major victories included the Gran Criterium and Derby Italiano in Italy, the Grand Prix de Paris and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in France, the Preis von Europa and Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany and the Great Voltigeur Stakes and John Porter Stakes in Britain. He was also placed in The Derby, St Leger Stakes, Coronation Cup and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He was retired to stud at the end of the 1982 season and had modest success as a sire of winners.

Nebos was a German Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best horses of his generation in Germany at the age of two winning three races including the Zukunfts Rennen. In the following year he won the Dr. Busch-Memorial, Union-Rennen, Grosser Preis von Berlin and Preis von Europa as well as finishing second to Königsstuhl in both the Deutsches Derby and the Aral-Pokal. Nebos emerged as the best racehorse in Germany in 1980, winning five races including the Gerling-Preis, Grosser Preis von Dortmund, Grosser Preis von Baden, Grosser Preis von Düsseldorf and the Grosser Preis von Berlin for the second time as well as being beaten less than two lengths in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He later became a successful breeding stallion.

Sea The Moon is a retired German Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2014 Deutsches Derby. He was trained by Markus Klug, and bred and owned by Gestut Görlsdorf.

Reliable Man is a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Initially trained in France, he won two minor races in the spring of 2011 before defeating a strong field to win the Prix du Jockey Club. After losing his unbeaten record in the Grand Prix de Paris he won the Prix Niel before running poorly in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. As a four-year-old he failed to win in six races but ran well to finish a close fourth in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. In 2013 he was sent to Australia where he won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (ATC), sustaining a career-ending injury in the process.

Lando was a German Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was twice named German Horse of the Year and set an earnings record for a horse trained in Germany. He was one of the best juveniles in Germany in 1990, winning the Preis des Winterfavoriten and went on to greater success in 1993 when he won the Deutsches Derby and the Grosser Preis von Baden. He continued to improve as a four-year-old, winning the Hansa Preis and a second Grosser Preis von Baden in Germany as well as the Gran Premio del Jockey Club in Italy. He had his best year in 1995 when he won the Gran Premio di Milano and the Preis der Privatbankiers Merck, Finck & Co before ending his career with a victory in the Japan Cup. In all, he won 10 of his 23 races, having competed in five different countries on three continents. After his retirement from racing he became a successful breeding stallion. He died in 2013 at the age of 23.

Boreal is a German Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from March 2001 until March 2003, he ran fourteen times in four countries and won three races, two of them at Group One level. Unraced as a two-year-old, he won one minor race in his first four starts before winning the Deutsches Derby. In the following year, he was campaigned internationally and became the first German-trained horse in 27 years to record a Group One victory in the United Kingdom when he won the Coronation Cup. Apart from his successes, he was placed in several major races, including the Credit Suisse Pokal, Grosser Preis von Baden and Dubai Sheema Classic. He was retired from racing to become a breeding stallion but had very little success as a sire of winners.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Barney Roy</span> British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Barney Roy is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. After winning his only race as a juvenile in 2016 he emerged as a top-class performer in the following year. He won the Greenham Stakes and finished second in the 2000 Guineas before recording his biggest victory in the St James's Palace Stakes. He went on to finish second in the Eclipse Stakes and third in the International Stakes before being retired to stud at the end of the year. His spell at stud proved unsuccessful and he returned to racing in the 2019 season. As a gelding in 2020 he recorded victories in the Al Rashidiya, Jebel Hatta, Bayerisches Zuchtrennen and Grosser Preis von Baden.

In 2018 he won the John Porter Stakes and Jockey Club Stakes but was gelded at the end of the year. As a five-year-old he recorded his first Group 1 victory when he took the Coronation Cup and followed up by winning the Hardwicke Stakes. He remained in training in 2020 but suffered a fatal injury in July of that year.

In the following year he won the Hansa-Preis and the Grosser Preis von Baden before recording an upset victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. A year later he came in third in the same race, cementing his status as one of the best German racehorses in recent history.

Va Bank is a thoroughbred racing horse who won the 2015 Polish "triple crown". At the end of 2016, 50% of the shares were bought by Team Valor International. After that, he was transferred to trainer Andreas Wohler. Va Bank's last race was in 2019.
