The Old Roosevelt Bridge (also called the St. Lucie River Bridge) is a bascule bridge that carries the old Dixie Highway (County Road 707) across the St. Lucie River in Stuart, Florida. The current bridge was built in 1964 and is a low-level bascule bridge.
The first bridge built at this site to carry the Dixie Highway over the St. Lucie River was a swing bridge in 1918. This first bridge was named the Henry Flagler Bridge, named for the founder of the parallel Florida East Coast Railway. The route over the bridge would receive the designation of US 1 in 1926. [2]
In 1934, the swing bridge was replaced by a two-lane bascule bridge. [3] The original swing bridge was then dismantled but its swing span was reused a year later for the Torry Island Swing Bridge near Belle Glade, where it still operates today. [4] The bridge was named Roosevelt Bridge after President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose New Deal funded the bridge's construction. [3]
A second two-lane bascule bridge (the one operating today) was built in 1964 right next to the 1934 bridge in an effort to widen the river crossing to four lanes. The newer bridge would carry northbound traffic, while the 1934 bridge would carry southbound traffic. [3]
When the new high-level Roosevelt Bridge was completed in 1996, US 1 was rerouted over the new span. After the new bridge opened, the Old Roosevelt Bridge remained in service for local traffic and was reduced to two lanes on the 1964 bascule bridge. The 1934 bridge, which had operated for over 60 years, was then demolished. [4] Although a small part of the 1934 span still stands abandoned on the north side of the river. [5]
Although the rest of the old Dixie Highway adjacent to the bridge has been given to the city of Stuart, the Florida Department of Transportation continues to maintain the bridge as unsigned State Road 707.[ citation needed ]
A swing bridge is a movable bridge that can be rotated horizontally around a vertical axis. It has as its primary structural support a vertical locating pin and support ring, usually at or near to its center of gravity, about which the swing span can then pivot horizontally as shown in the animated illustration to the right.
The 14th Street bridges refers to the three bridges near each other that cross the Potomac River, connecting Arlington, Virginia and Washington, D.C. A major gateway for automotive, bicycle and rail traffic, the bridge complex is named for 14th Street, which feeds automotive traffic into it on the D.C. end.

The Roosevelt Bridge is a major highway segmental bridge across the St. Lucie River in Stuart, Florida. Carrying U.S. Route 1, it was built to supersede the old Roosevelt Bridge, which had twin parallel drawbridges, one for northbound traffic and the other for southbound. The new bridge, completed in 1996, is raised and much longer than the older twin drawbridges. The southbound span of the old bridge is still functional for road and boat traffic and now carries two-way road traffic for what is now known as Dixie Highway, County Road 707. The new high-level Roosevelt Bridge is approximately one mile long and is made of two three-lane sections running parallel to each other. The northbound bridge was completed first, and housed two lanes of both north and south-bound traffic until the second bridge was finished. Because of high traffic volume and visibility, the Roosevelt Bridge is a frequent location for many protests and political campaigning in the area.

U.S. Highway 136 (US 136) is a short U.S. Highway in Keokuk, Iowa. The route was designated nationally in 1951 and has remained largely unchanged through Keokuk since then. The highway originally crossed the Mississippi on the Keokuk Rail Bridge, which was the second bridge built and operated by Andrew Carnegie's Keokuk & Hamilton Bridge Company in that location. While it was designed for wagons and early automobiles, crossing the rail bridge became difficult in larger modern vehicles, specifically semi trucks. As a result, a new automobile-only bridge was built directly to the south of the older span. The Keokuk–Hamilton Bridge opened in 1985 eight months early and under budget.
