San Francisco Bay is a shallow estuary in the US state of California. It is surrounded by a contiguous region known as the San Francisco Bay Area, and is dominated by the large cities of San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland.
Hayward is a city located in Alameda County, California in the East Bay subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area. With a 2018 population of 159,620, Hayward is the sixth largest city in the Bay Area and the third largest in Alameda County. Hayward was ranked as the 33rd most populous municipality in California. It is included in the San Francisco–Oakland–Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area by the US Census. Redwood Shores is a waterfront community in Redwood City, California. It is located along the western shore of San Francisco Bay on the San Francisco Peninsula in San Mateo County. Redwood Shores is the home of several major technology companies, including Oracle Corporation, Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Zuora, Qualys, Crystal Dynamics and Shutterfly.
The Hayward Fault Zone is a geologic fault zone capable of generating destructive earthquakes. This fault is about 74 mi (119 km) long, situated mainly along the western base of the hills on the east side of San Francisco Bay. It runs through densely populated areas, including Richmond, El Cerrito, Berkeley, Oakland, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Hayward, Union City, Fremont, and San Jose.
Mt. Eden was an unincorporated agricultural district in Eden Township, Alameda County, California, United States of America. It was annexed by the City of Hayward. It lies at an elevation of 43 feet.
Eden Township is a former township of Alameda County, California in the San Francisco Bay Area region, which includes the present-day cities of Hayward and San Leandro, as well as the unincorporated census-designated areas of Ashland, Castro Valley, Cherryland, Fairview, and San Lorenzo. It was created from a group of Mexican land grants that were added to Alameda County when the county was established in 1853. Today there are several public and private agencies serving the region.
The San Francisco Bay Trail is a bicycle and pedestrian trail that when finished will allow continuous travel around the shoreline of San Francisco Bay. As of 2020, 356 miles (573 km) of the trail have been completed. When finished, the trail will be over 500 miles (800 km) of paved and gravel paths, bike lanes, and sidewalks, linking 47 cities across nine counties and crossing seven toll bridges. It is a project of the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), in collaboration with other agencies, private companies, non-profit organizations, and advocacy groups.
Hayward Regional Shoreline is a regional park located on the shores of the San Francisco Bay in Hayward, California. It is part of the East Bay Regional Parks system. The 1,713 acre park extends to the shores of San Lorenzo. Part of the park is former commercial salt flats purchased in 1996. A former landfill, now capped with soil and plants, is located in the park. The park includes the 250 acre tidal wetland, Cogswell Marsh, and the 364 acre Oro Loma Marsh. Located to the south of the park is the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center, which provides information on the Bay shore habitats. The San Francisco Bay Trail runs through the park, which connects the park with San Lorenzo Creek.
The Leslie Salt Company was a salt-producing company located in the San Francisco Bay Area, at the current locations of Newark, Hayward and other parts of the bay.
The Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) is a public school district serving the city of Hayward, California, in Alameda County, in the United States. Supervised by the superintendent and the HUSD board of trustees, the district serves about 21,000 students in 30 schools, and employs more than 950 teachers. The current superintendent is Dr. Matt Wayne and the current board of trustees president is Dr. Robert Carlson.
Horizon Services, Inc. (HSI) is a nonprofit social service organization providing alcohol and drug treatment and recovery, mental health recovery, and substance abuse prevention services in Alameda, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. The executive director is Keith Lewis, who has held the position since 1986. Their programs utilize the Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous models, along with other methods of treatment. HSI is based in Hayward, California, which is a source for some of their funding.
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D.) is the park management agency for most of the parks in the city of Hayward, California and environs. It was created in 1944 and is an independent special district under California law. H.A.R.D. is the largest recreation district in California. It manages parks in the bordering city of San Leandro, and the unincorporated regions of Castro Valley and San Lorenzo. It manages the park grounds for numerous schools in the region. Events and classes are scheduled and listed in a quarterly brochure. The parks 2010-2011 budget was $24,383,637.
Mt. Eden Cemetery is a cemetery in Hayward, California, in the area formerly called "Mt. Eden". The site was first established in 1860 as a pioneer cemetery. It is still in use. As of 2005, there were 2,821 records (gravesites).
Eden Congregational Church, also known as Pioneer Chapel, is a historic church building located just north of downtown Hayward in Alameda County, California. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The church is still in use by the Eden United Church of Christ (Congregational). A culverted stretch of San Lorenzo Creek runs past it.
Eden Landing Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve in Hayward and Union City, California, on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The reserve is managed by the California Department of Fish and Game and comprises 5,040 acres of former industrial salt ponds now used as a low salinity waterbird habitat.
The Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center is a natural history and ecology interpretive nature center located in Hayward, California. It is directly adjacent to the north side of Highway 92 as it approaches the San Mateo–Hayward Bridge, and is accessed from the highway by the last offramp in the westbound direction before the bridge toll gates. The Center was dedicated in 1986, and is operated by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District.
Hayward Area Historical Society(HAHS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to documenting the history of the city of Hayward, California and adjacent communities. These areas include San Lorenzo, Ashland, Cherryland, Castro Valley, Fairview, the former communities of Russell City, Mount Eden, Schafer Park, and other parts of unincorporated Alameda County. The society was founded in 1956. Their museum in Downtown Hayward closed in 2012. Their new facility opened nearby in 2014.
The San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds are an approximately 16,500 acres (6,700 ha) part of the San Francisco Bay that have been used as salt evaporation ponds since the California Gold Rush era. Most of the ponds were once wetlands in the cities of Redwood City, Newark, Hayward and other parts of the bay.
