Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is a public institute of technology located in Kanpur,Uttar Pradesh,India. As an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),it was declared an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act.
Kanpur ( ),formerly anglicized as Cawnpore,is the largest city of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It was the primary financial and commercial centre of Northern India. Founded in the year 1207 by a Rajput ruler Raja Kanh Deo,Kanpur became one of the most important commercial and military stations of British India. Kanpur is often regarded as the heart of Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur had been the major financial and industrial centre of North India and also the ninth-largest urban economy in India. Today it is famous for its colonial architecture,gardens,sweets,dialect,IT parks and fine quality leather,plastic and textile products which are exported mainly to the West. Kanpur is also the financial capital of Uttar Pradesh.
The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are centrally funded technical institutes under the ownership of the Ministry of Education,Government of India. They are governed by the National Institutes of Technology,Science Education,and Research Act,2007,which declared them institutions of national importance and laid down their powers,duties,and framework for governance. The act lists 31 NITs. Each NIT is autonomous and linked to the others through a common council known as the Council of NITSER,which oversees their administration. All NITs are funded by the Government of India.

Governor of North-Western Provinces Sir William Muir in 1873,who suggested the idea of a Central University at Allahabad,which later evolved to the present university. Its Central University status was re-established through the University of Allahabad Act 2005 by the Parliament of India.

It was established as the Uttar Pradesh Technical University through the Government of Uttar Pradesh on 8 May 2000. To reduce workload and to ensure proper management,the university was bifurcated into separate universities,Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU) and Mahamaya Technical University (MTU),with effect from 1 May 2010. In 2013,as a new government came into power,the university was formed again by combining the two on 5 January 2013.

He has served as Vice Chancellor of Uttarakhand Open University (UOU) from 25 November 2009 till November 2012. He was then appointed Vice-Chancellor of Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU) in Rajasthan’s Kota on 1 February 2013 and served there till 31 July 2015 with additional charge as officiating Vice-Chancellor of the Rajasthan Technical University in Kota on 16 May 2015 till 31 July 2015. On 4 August 2015,he was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) and served there till 9 August 2021 with additional charge as Vice-Chancellor of Harcourt Butler Technical University Kanpur and officiating Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow’s Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University (KMCLU) till 9 August 2021. In,April 2021 he was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University where he is currently serving with additional charge as Vice-Chancellor of the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Agra from January 2022 till September 2022. He has also served as President of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) from 1 July 2024 till 30 June 2025. He has successfully organized many national and international conferences.
Sarvagya Singh Katiyar,FRSC,popularly known as S. S. Katiyar,was an Indian scientist specializing in enzymology,and the founder Director of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University,Lucknow. He is a former president of the Association of Indian Universities and a former vice chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University,Kanpur and Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri,the fourth highest Indian civilian award,followed by Padma Bhushan,the third highest civilian award,in 2009.
Jagendra Swarup was an Indian politician,educationist and advocate from Uttar Pradesh,India. He served as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from Kanpur Graduates constituency for 34 years. The constituency was held by the family for 99 years and his father,Virendra Swarup,served it for nearly 24 years. He passed away at Delhi on 30 July 2014,the age of 65,while undergoing treatment for a liver ailment.
