Onrush (stylised as ONRUSH) is a racing game developed by Codemasters and published by Deep Silver for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was developed by Codemasters and the team from Evolution Studios. Onrush servers officially shut down on November 30th, 2022.
Onrush is an arcade-style vehicular combat game in which players drive a variety of off-road vehicles, from motorcycles to buggies, across large levels over hilly terrain. [1] [2] [3] The game features a boost mechanic that players can use to increase their vehicle's speed. Players earn boost by performing stunts and slamming rival racers to take them out. [4] The game itself is a team game; twelve players are split into two teams of six.
In a significant departure from other games in the racing genre, none of the game modes involve reaching the finish line first. In "Overdrive", teams score points by boosting; the first team to boost enough to reach the target score wins. "Countdown" involves a series of checkpoints and a timer that drains over time; teams can keep the timer from running out by successfully passing the checkpoints, and if either team's timer ever hits zero, the other team scores a point. "Lockdown" is a King of the Hill-style mode in which teams fight to stay inside a zone that moves along the track with them for points. "Switch" gives each member of each team three lives and tasks the teams with taking each other down to win, but upon crashing, players will respawn in a more powerful vehicle if they have lives left.
Onrush was developed by Codemasters Evo a team largely made up of former employees of Sony subsidiary Evolution Studios. [1] Sony Shut down Evolution in March 2016 although the team announced plans to continue working together on other projects [5]
With the game the studio wanted to answer the question "How do we keep everyone in the action all of time" the solution the team came up with was a gameplay system dubbed "The Stampede" by which players are respawned near the other players at all times creating a pack of cars traveling together. [6] The team took inspiration from a variety of genres including, sports, shooters and fighting games. [7] [6] The latter influenced the team due to its possession of "fast flowing rounds that seamlessly roll into the next one and give players the opportunity for a comeback if their first round didn't go so well". [6] The game Rocket League was also a notable influence on the team. [8]
Due to the nature of the gameplay the team was nervous about pitching the game to Codemasters, although they were receptive and asked them to proceed with a prototype. [8] Within the development team themselves there was some concern about the decision to stray from the established racing formula however at this point the mechanics specifically the "stampede" did not lend itself well to such a change. [8] For game modes the team came up with 50 possible modes from which they prototyped twelve and eventually whittled down to only four. The remaining modes were chosen because "played to the strengths of Onrush and the Stampede system". [8]
Onrush was announced in October 2017 during Paris Games Week. [1] The game was published by Deep Silver and was released on 5 June 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. [1] [9] Prior to its release a public beta was available for console players running from 17 May to the 21st with players who preordered getting access to it for an extra 48 hours prior. [10] Although a version for Windows was announced, [11] though as of December 2023 it has not been released, and the digital console versions have been delisted.

The game was received well by critics, generating scores of 75/100 and 77/100 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions respectively on reviews aggregation website Metacritic. [12] [13] Despite the critical response, the game sold poorly, which contributed to a series to layoffs at Codemasters, including game director Paul Rustchynsky. [22]
The game was nominated for "Best Audio Design" at The Independent Game Developers' Association Awards 2018, [23] [24] and won the award for "Game, Original Racing" at the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Awards. [25] [26] It was also nominated for "Best Racing Game" at The Independent Game Developers' Association Awards 2019. [27]
The Codemasters Software Company Limited is a British video game developer and former publisher based in Southam, England, which is a subsidiary of American corporation Electronic Arts and managed under EA Sports division. Founded by brothers Richard and David Darling in October 1986, Codemasters is one of the oldest British game studios, and in 2005 was named the best independent video game developer by magazine Develop. It formerly also published third-party games.
Dirt and Dirt Rally, is a rally racing video game series developed and published by Codemasters. Codemasters had acquired the exclusive license to the World Rally Championship series in June 2020, which will begin as a five-year deal in 2023.
Evolution Studios Ltd. was a British video game developer based in Runcorn, Cheshire. The company was founded in 1999 by Martin Kenwright and Ian Hetherington, following the purchase of their studio Digital Image Design's publisher Ocean Software by Infogrames. Kenwright then left Digital Image Design with six members of staff to form Evolution Studios.
R: Racing Evolution is a racing video game released on the GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox by Namco. It is a spin-off of the Ridge Racer series. Unlike the latter, the game uses licensed racecars rather than fictional vehicles featured in the franchise. The Xbox version is not compatible with Xbox 360. The GameCube version features Pac-Man VS as a separate disc.
Race Driver: Grid is a 2008 racing video game developed and published by Codemasters for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, arcade, Java ME and OS X. It is the first game in the Grid series.
F1 2009 is a video game based on the 2009 season of the Formula One motor racing series. It was released on the Wii and PlayStation Portable in November 2009 for North America, PAL region and the United Kingdom. The game was also released on iOS on 14 December for £6.99. The PlayStation Portable version was also available as a download from the PlayStation Store from 16 November.
F1 2010 is a video game based on the 2010 season of the Formula One world championship. The game was released in September 2010 on the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms, becoming the first F1 game released on the Xbox 360. It has sold 2.3 million units worldwide. The game engine is based on the new EGO 1.5 engine, an unofficially titled evolution of the EGO 1.0 engine that was created specially for the title.
IndyCar Series is a racing simulator developed by Brain in a Jar and published by Codemasters. The game was released in 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Windows. The game is based on the 2002 Indy Racing League. A sequel to the game, IndyCar Series 2005, was released in 2004 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Windows based on the 2003 IndyCar Series.
F1 2011 is a video game developed by Codemasters based on the 2011 Formula One season. The game was released in 2011 on Microsoft Windows, the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, with a 2012 release on the PlayStation Vita as a launch title for the system. The game engine is based on EGO 2.0 engine.

It aims to move the series back towards "more authentic racing games" following the release of Grid 2, which Codemasters felt was not as well-received by the company's core fanbase as it was hoped for. The developers consequently introduced major modifications to the handling model and built a lean, race-first oriented design for this title.

Three Fields Entertainment Limited is a British video game development studio. It was founded in February 2014 by Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry, who had previously worked at Criterion Games, along with developer Paul Ross who had worked with them under Criterion Games.
F1 2017 is the official video game of the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship, released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows on 25 August. The game includes all of the twenty circuits, twenty drivers and ten teams competing in the season. The macOS version, developed by Feral Interactive, was released simultaneously with the other versions, a first in the series' history. The Linux version, also by Feral Interactive, was released on 2 November.
Team Sonic Racing is a 2019 kart racing game developed by Sumo Digital and published by Sega. A spin-off of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, it was released for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in May 2019. A simplified version for iOS developed by Hardlight, Sonic Racing, was released via Apple Arcade in September 2019. The game was later released on Amazon Luna in March 2021.

Dirt 5 is a simcade racing video game developed and published by Codemasters. The game was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on 6 November 2020, for Xbox Series X/S on 10 November, and for PlayStation 5 on 12 November and 19 November, for Stadia on 24 March 2021, and for Luna on 15 July 2021. It was the last video game released by Codemasters as a publisher before being acquired by Electronic Arts (EA) on 18 February 2021.
Project CARS was a sim racing video game series developed by Slightly Mad Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The franchise was introduced in 2015 and received a sequel in 2017, followed by Project CARS 3 in 2020. Following the acquisition of Codemasters by Electronic Arts, development on the Project CARS series ended in November 2022.
