Operation Karbala-2 (Persian: عملیات کربلای 2) was an Iranian operation during Iran–Iraq War [1] [11] [12] [13] which was launched on 1 September 1986 [14] [15] in Haji Omeran area in Iraq [16] with the command/participation of a brigade from Seyyed-al-Shohada corp-4 (of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps). As a result of the operation which was commenced by the code of "Ya Aba Abdellah al-Hussain (a.s.)", a part of "Haj-Omeran" road and some altitudes became occupied by Iranian forces. [15]

At the operation Karbala-2 [17] [18] [19] which was almost near the end of the 4th year of the war, there were other (Iranian) corps which participated in the operation in addition to Seyyed-al-Shohada corp-4, including: [15]

Badr brigade-9, Qaem-12, Imam Reza-21, Quds-105 and Shuhada-155; which was done totally by the participation of 28 battalions from Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. [15]

Iran at the end of this operation, Iranian forces captured the altitudes of "1600, 1700, 1800, 2000, 2200, 2435" and also a part of "Haj-Omran-Darbande Chuman Mostafa" and "GardKu" road [15] in Iraq. [20]

Saddam was able to seize the city in May 1986, for the third time. He then offered to trade it for al-Faw, but instead of negotiating, the Iranians recaptured the city in June 1986.

Mahmoud Kaveh was an Iranian military commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and one of the main figures in Iran–Iraq War.

33rd Al-Mahdi Division was a brigade of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It was established on 24 February 1982 before Operation Fath ol-Mobin in the Iran–Iraq War, with Ali Fazli as its commander. It was part of the 7th Fajr Division for some time during the war. After Operation Beit ol-Moqaddas, there was some reform in the structure of the brigade, and Mohammad Jaafar Asadi was made as the commander, and remained the commander of the unit until the end of the war. On 24 April 1983 the brigade was separated from the 19th Fajr Division and became part of the newly founded 7th Corps. The brigade was turned into the 33rd Al-Mahdi Division after the successful Operation Dawn 8.

Sabz-Ali Khodadad was the commander of the 2nd Brigade of "Karbala-25 Division" and the Malik-Ashtar Brigade during Iran-Iraq War. He died on 30 November 1986 owing to hitting by mortar fragments—in "Operation Karbala-4" during the reconnaissance operations in the region. Khodadad was buried in the city of Babol.

Mansour Haghdoust (1962–2001) was an Iranian IRGC commander and one of the first IRGC members to become an acting commander during the Iran–Iraq War. After the war he started studying in physics and was granted a PhD in Quantum mechanics from the University of Kashan. Notable Iranian generals such as Ahmad Kazemi and Mohammad Bagheri have called him the father of Sunni Basij and the Godfather of Iranian Paramilitary forces. He died in the year 2001 because of severe injuries to his kidneys by Chemical warfare. He was one of the commanders of 33rd Al-Mahdi Division and the deputy commander of 8th Najaf Ashraf Division, 27th Mohammad Rasulullah Division and 31st Ashura Division.

The Tharallah Headquarters is an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command. It is in charge of security for Tehran area. However, it also carries responsibility for territorial security in the region. The Thar-Allah Headquarters is directly subordinate to the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Still, its day-to-day operations are supervised by an executive commander.
