Operation Whirlwind is a 1983 video game published by Broderbund Software for the Commodore 64 and Atari 8-bit computers.
Operation Whirlwind is a battalion-level strategy game set in Northern France. [2]
Players take control of individual tanks, guns, and infantry platoons, maneuvering them across a detailed tactical map while the computer acts as the opponent. Gameplay involves moving units using a cursor, with hidden enemy units revealing themselves by firing upon the player's forces. As units move closer to the enemy, the intensity of bombardment increases, potentially causing them to lose strength or be forced to halt their advance. Players can choose to rapidly advance, sacrificing some units in the process, or adopt a safer approach by inching forward cautiously. [3]
The game also features an assault phase, during which units engage in close combat. Engineers are used to rebuild bridges to facilitate the advance. [3]
Mark J. Bausman reviewed the game for Computer Gaming World and stated, "Although not as complex as some computer wargames, this game provides the elements of a good tactical duel." [2] Softline found the approachability to be a plus: "For people who have avoided the mammoth games by Strategic Simulations and Avalon Hill simply because each game swallows hours of one's life and there's so much information to keep track of, Operation Whirlwind is a godsend." The reviewer also complimented the writing quality of the manual. [4] Mike Singleton in a review for Computer & Video Games, praised Operation Whirlwind for its strategic complexity and the way it manages to avoid the tedium often associated with the genre. [3]
M.U.L.E. is a multiplayer video game written for Atari 8-bit computers by Ozark Softscape. Designer Danielle Bunten Berry takes advantage of the four joystick ports of the Atari 400 and 800 to allow four-player simultaneous play. Published in 1983, M.U.L.E. was one of the first five games from new company Electronic Arts, alongside Axis Assassin, Archon: The Light and the Dark, Worms?, and Hard Hat Mack. It is primarily a turn-based strategy game, but incorporates real-time elements where players compete directly as well as aspects that simulate economics.
Choplifter is a military themed scrolling shooter developed by Dan Gorlin for the Apple II and published by Broderbund in 1982. It was ported to Atari 8-bit computers the same year and also to the VIC-20, Commodore 64, Atari 5200, ColecoVision, MSX, and Thomson computers.
B.C.'s Quest for Tires is an horizontally scrolling video game designed by Rick Banks and Michael Bate and published by Sierra On-Line in 1983. Versions were released for the Commodore 64, IBM PC, Atari 8-bit computers, ColecoVision, ZX Spectrum, MSX, and Apple II. Based on the comic strip B.C. by Johnny Hart, BC's Quest for Tires is similar to Irem's Moon Patrol from the previous year. The game's title is a play on the contemporaneous film Quest for Fire.
Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom, known as Zoom 909 in Japan, is a pseudo-3D rail shooter released as an arcade video game by Sega in 1982. The player controls a spaceship in a third-person perspective, adapting the three-dimensional perspective of Sega's earlier racing game Turbo (1981) for the space shoot 'em up genre. It uses the Buck Rogers license, referencing the space battles, though Buck himself is never seen.

Shamus is a shooter with light action-adventure game elements written by Cathryn Mataga and published by Synapse Software. Wayout is among the first maze games to offer full 360 degree 3D perspective and movement, and its graphics were considered state-of-the-art upon its release. There were many pseudo-3D maze games at the time, but they used a fixed perspective and limited the player to four orientations.
