Orlando Salvador Jorge Villegas (born 2 February 1991) is a Dominican politician and journalist.

Early life and family

Jorge Villegas was born on 2 February 1991 into a prominent upper class white family from Santiago, Dominican Republic with political connections. His parents are Patricia Villegas, diplomat, and Orlando Jorge Mera, politician and lawyer. He has one sister. His paternal grandfather Salvador Jorge Blanco was President of the Dominican Republic from 1982 to 1986. His maternal great-great-grandfather Faustino de Soto was Senator for El Seibo Province in the 19th century. He is also descended from General Ramón Santana, the twin brother of Lieutenant-General Pedro Santana, 1st President of the Dominican Republic and Marquis of Las Carreras. Jorge Villegas studied social communication at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. He has a master from Escuela de Organización Industrial. [1] [2] [3]

Political career

Jorge Villegas, a member of the Modern Revolutionary Party, was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic for the National District in June 2022[ when? ] and took office on 16 August.[ citation needed ]

He is a member of the Parliamentary Group of Dominican-Brazilian Friendship.[ citation needed ]

Pedro Santana y Familias, 1st Marquis of Las Carreras was a Dominican military commander and royalist politician who served as the president of the junta that had established the First Dominican Republic, a precursor to the position of the President of the Dominican Republic, and as the first President of the republic in the modern line of succession. A traditional royalist who was fond of the Monarchy of Spain and the Spanish Empire, he ruled as a governor-general, but effectively as an authoritarian dictator. During his life he enjoyed the title of "Libertador de la Patria."

The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) is the public university system in the Dominican Republic with its flagship campus in the Ciudad Universitaria neighborhood of Santo Domingo and with regional campuses in many cities of the Republic. It was founded by Jose Gabriel Garcia and Emiliano Tejera in 1866 as the Professional Institute, replacing the former Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino, one of the first universities of the Western Hemisphere (Americas), which was founded unofficially by a Papal bull in 1538, officially by royal decree in 1558, and closed in 1822. It was later renamed University of Santo Domingo in 1914.
