The P.V. type minesweeping trawlers were seven Royal Canadian Navy minesweeping trawlers built before the First World War in the United States. Initially constructed and used as menhaden trawlers they were taken into service the Royal Canadian Navy during the First World War for patrol duty along the Atlantic coast. Following the war they were returned to their original service.

Construction and design

The seven vessels that made up the P.V. type were initially named William H. Murray, Amagansett, Herbert N. Edwards, Martin J. Marran, Rollin E. Mason, Leander Wilcox and Rowland H. Wilcox. The trawlers were built at three locations in northeastern United States. William H. Murray, Amagansett, Herbert N. Edwards and Martin J. Marran were constructed at Rockland, Maine. Rollin E. Mason was built at Essex, Massachusetts and Leander Wilcox and Rowland H. Wilcox were constructed at Noank, Connecticut. [1]

The seven vessels that made up the P.V. type were of varying but similar dimensions. William H. Murray and Amagansett were the largest of the seven. They were 151 feet 6 inches (46.2 m) long with a beam of 24 feet 1 inch (7.3 m) and a draught of 13 feet (4.0 m). They had a displacement of 390 long tons (400  t ). Both were launched in 1912. Herbert J. Edwards, Martin J. Marrin and Rollin E. Mason had the same length and beam of the previous two, however, their draught was 12 feet 9 inches (3.9 m) and had a displacement of 323 long tons (328 t). All three were launched in 1911 Leander Wilcox was 126 feet (38.4 m) long with a beam of 22 feet 3 inches (6.8 m) and a draught of 9 feet 2 inches (2.8 m) and had a displacement of 205 long tons (208 t). She was launched in 1903. Rowland H. Wilcox was 132 feet (40.2 m) long with the same beam as Leander Wilcox. However, her draught was deeper at 10 feet 7 inches (3.2 m) and she displaced 247 long tons (251 t). Rowland H. Wilcox was launched in 1911. All seven vessels had a maximum speed of 8 knots (15 km/h; 9.2 mph). [1]

Service history

The seven P.V. type vessels were constructed as menhaden fishing trawlers for use in the Atlantic fishery. [1] In January 1917, the Royal Navy demanded that the Royal Canadian Navy expand its patrol force to protect the shipping lanes around the Canadian Atlantic coast. However, the British had no intention of providing any of their fleet of trawlers or patrol vessels in support. [2] As part of the Royal Canadian Navy's effort to increase the number of patrol vessels, inquiries were sent to the United States to acquire suitable vessels. Those inquiries resulted in the seven menhaden trawlers being purchased in New England. [3] Commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy, they took on new names. William H. Murray became P.V. I, Amagansett became P.V. II, Herbert N. Edwards became P.V. III, Martin J. Marran became P.V. IV, Rollin E. Mason became P.V. V, Leander Wilcox became P.V. VI and Rowland H. Wilcox became P.V. VII. [1] Their 8-knot speed made them more suitable as minesweepers [3] and they were converted into such with the addition of a QF 12-pounder (76 mm) gun placed forward. [1]

Entering service in March 1917, the seven trawlers formed a minesweeping flotilla based out of Sydney, Nova Scotia for the remainder of the war until April 1919. In April they were disarmed and resumed their former purpose as fishing trawler. They returned to their former names as well. [1]

HMCS <i>Armentières</i>

HMCS Armentières was one of twelve Battle-class naval trawlers used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). Armentières entered service in 1918 near the end of the First World War on the Atlantic coast of Canada. Following the war, the ship was transferred to the Department of Marine and Fisheries for a short period before reverting to RCN service in 1923 on the Pacific coast of Canada. The ship sank in 1925, was raised and re-entered service, remaining with the fleet through the Second World War as an examination vessel at Prince Rupert, British Columbia. After the end of the war, the vessel entered mercantile service becoming A.G. Garrish in 1947, later renamed Arctic Rover in 1958, Laforce in 1962 and Polaris in 1973. The ship's registry was deleted in 1991.

HMCS Messines was one of twelve Battle-class naval trawlers constructed for and used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Following the war the ship was transferred to the Canadian Department of Marine and Fisheries and converted into a lightvessel. Re-designated Lightship No. 3, the vessel was sold for scrap and broken up in 1962.

HMCS <i>Festubert</i>

HMCS Festubert was one of twelve Battle-class naval trawlers constructed for and used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Following the war, Festubert remained in Canadian service as a training ship until 1934. Reactivated for the Second World War, the ship was used as a gate vessel in the defence of Halifax, Nova Scotia and re-designated Gate Vessel 17. Following the war, the trawler was sold for commercial use and renamed Inverleigh. Inverleigh was scuttled off Burgeo, Newfoundland on 30 June 1971.

HMCS <i>Ypres</i>

HMCS Ypres was one of twelve Battle-class naval trawlers constructed for and used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Named after the Second and Third battles of Ypres, the ship entered service in 1918, patrolling the east coast of Canada for submarine activity. Following the war, the ship remained in service with as a patrol and training ship. In 1938, the vessel recommissioned as a gate vessel, re-designated Gate Vessel 1, in service at Halifax, Nova Scotia. On 12 May 1940, the gate vessel was rammed and sunk in a collision with the British battleship HMS Revenge.

HMCS Vimy was one of twelve Battle-class naval trawlers constructed for and used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Following the war the ship was transferred to the Canadian Department of Marine and Fisheries and converted into a lightvessel. Re-designated Lightship No. 5, the vessel remained in Canadian government service until being possibly broken up for scrap in 1958.

Re-designated Lightship No. 20, the vessel returned to RCN service in 1940 to become the gate vessel Gate Vessel 12 during the Second World War. After the war, the trawler returned to government service and was discarded in 1962.

Battle-class trawler 1917 Canadian naval trawler class

The Battle-class trawlers were a class of naval trawlers built for and used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Between the wars, some remained in RCN service, but most were transferred to the Department of Marine and Fisheries, where they performed a number of functions, including working as lightships and fisheries patrol vessels. During the Second World War, a number of these trawlers were re-acquired by the RCN, but all the navy's Battle-class trawlers were decommissioned soon after the war. A number of the class remained in civilian government and commercial service for years after the war, although most had been disposed of by the early 1960s.

TR series minesweeping trawler

The TR series were minesweeping naval trawlers built during World War I. Ordered by the Royal Navy, they were loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy for seaward defence of the East Coast of Canada. The total number of vessels that entered service is unknown with 60 hulls constructed by eight Canadian shipyards. Based on the British Castle class, some entered service with the United States Navy during the war. Following World War I, they were sold for commercial use to replace the fishing vessels lost during the war. In World War II many of them were taken over by the Royal Navy as auxiliary minesweepers and two of them returned to the Royal Canadian Navy.

HMCS <i>Constance</i>

HMCS Constance was a commissioned minesweeper of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Originally built as a fisheries cruiser for the Department of Marine and Fisheries, upon completion she was transferred to the Department of Customs, and was used by the Customs Preventive Service. Constance spent the entire war as a patrol and examination vessel on the East Coast of Canada. Following the war, the vessel was sold in 1924.

HMCS <i>Curlew</i>

HMCS Curlew was a commissioned minesweeper and patrol vessel of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) that served in the First World War. Constructed in Ontario in 1892, Curlew was initially a Canadian government fisheries patrol vessel on the East Coast of Canada. In 1912, the ship was fitted as a minesweeper and in 1914, joined the RCN. Curlew spent the entire war on the East Coast of Canada. Following the war, the ship was taken out of service and sold in 1921.

HMCyS Vijaya, named in honor of Vijaya, the first king of Sri Lanka, was an Algerine-class minesweeper of the Royal Ceylon Navy, the first warship of that navy. Vijaya had been built as HMS Flying Fish (J370) for the Royal Navy during World War II, but was given to Ceylon by the United Kingdom upon the 1951 formation of Ceylon's navy.

Royal Naval Patrol Service Military unit

The Royal Naval Patrol Service (RNPS) was a branch of the Royal Navy active during both the First and Second World Wars. The RNPS operated many small auxiliary vessels such as naval trawlers for anti-submarine and minesweeping operations to protect coastal Britain and convoys.

USS Amagansett (SP-693) was a United States Navy patrol vessel and minesweeper in commission from 1917 to 1920.

HMCS Canso was a Bangor-class minesweeper initially constructed for the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942, the minesweeper saw service on both the West and East Coasts of Canada as a convoy escort and patrol vessel. The vessel participated in the invasion of Normandy and spent the final years of the war in European waters. Canso was returned to the Royal Navy following the war and was broken up for scrap in 1948.

HMCS <i>Caraquet</i>

HMCS Caraquet was a Bangor-class minesweeper initially constructed for the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942, the vessel served on both coasts of Canada and took part in the Battle of the Atlantic as a convoy escort and the invasion of Normandy. Following the war, the minesweeper was returned to the United Kingdom who then sold the ship to the Portuguese Navy in 1946. Renamed Almirante Lacerda, the vessel was used as a survey ship until 1975 when it was discarded.

HMCS Kenora was a Bangor-class minesweeper that served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. Entering service in 1942, the minesweeper took part in the Battle of the Atlantic as a convoy escort and in the invasion of Normandy. Following the war, the vessel was laid up until reacquired in 1952 during the Korean War. Never re-entering service with the Royal Canadian Navy, Kenora was sold to the Turkish Navy in 1957. Renamed Bandirma by the Turkish Navy, the vessel was discarded in 1972.

<i>Pasages</i> (steam trawler)

ST Pasages was originally a Canadian "Castle" – TR series minesweeping trawler built by the Dominion Shipbuilding Company, Toronto, in 1917 for service with the Royal Canadian Navy during World War I as TR 14. Following the war the vessel was taken to the United Kingdom and converted to a fishing trawler in the 1920s. Renamed Pasages, the vessel ran aground in 1931 on the Isle of Man. The vessel was wrecked and her remains can still be seen.
