Parekunnel Joseph Thomas (1895 - 1965) was the first economic advisor of independent India. He was a Member of the Madras Legislative Council and later Member of the upper house (Rajya Sabha) of the Indian Parliament. [1]
He was born on 25 February 1895 at Kuravilangad,near Palai,in Meenachil Taluk,Kottayam District,Kerala as the son of Thommen Ouseph and Annama Thomas of the Pakalomattam-Parekunnel family. [1] He had his schooling at St. Ephraim's High School,Mannanam and did Intermediate at C M.S. College,Kottayam and M.A. at Department of Economics,St. Joseph's College,Trichy.
Initially he worked as a lecturer at University College,Trivandrum. In 1920 he went to UK and took B.Litt. from Balliol College,University of Oxford (1920–1922) and later D.Phil.,also from University of Oxford (1922–1924). On his return he worked as professor at the University of Ceylon (1924–1927) and the University of Madras (1927–1942). [2]
His public life started when he became a Member of the Madras Legislative Council in 1937 and continued as a Member up to 1942. In 1942 he became adviser,Department of Finance,Government of India,held that position during India's independence and continued for 6 years up to 1948. Dr Thomas signed the Bretton Woods Agreement that founded the IMF and the World Bank. He was a member of the Indian delegation that signed the United Nations Charter in 1945.
After leaving government service,he functioned as the founder-principal of St. Thomas College,Palai (1950–1952). He later became a Member of Rajya Sabha (1957–1962).
He died on 26 July 1965 [1] and is buried at the Infant Jesus Church,South Vazhakulam which falls under the Kizhakambalam forane of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese,at Aluva,in the district of Ernakulam,Kerala,India.

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church,is an Eastern Catholic Church based in Kerala,India. It is sui iuris (autonomous) particular Church in full communion with the Pope and the worldwide Catholic Church,including the Latin Church and the 22 other Eastern Catholic Churches,with self-governance under the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (CCEO). The Church is headed by the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar,currently George Alencherry. The Syro-Malabar Synod of Bishops canonically convoked and presided over by the Major Archbishop constitutes the supreme authority of the Church. Vilakuvelil Cherian Samuel (1912–1998),called Samuel Achen was an Indian Christian philosopher,scholar,university professor,theologian,historian,polyglot and ecumenical leader. Alappat Sreedhara Menon,known as A. Sreedhara Menon,was an Indian historian from Kerala. He is best known as the State Editor (1958–68) of Kerala District Gazetteers (1961–1975). He served as registrar of the Kerala University from 1968 to 1977,before retiring in 1980.
Jose Chacko Periappuram is an Indian cardiac surgeon and medical writer who performed the first successful heart transplant in the state of Kerala,India,as well as the first successful heart retransplant in the country. His other achievements include the first beating heart,awake bypass and total arterial revascularization surgeries in the state. Periappuram is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh,the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of London. He is the founder and chairman of "Heart Care Foundation",a charitable trust that financially assists poor heart patients. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri,the fourth highest civilian award,in 2011.
St. Thomas Cathedral is the Syro Malabar Catholic cathedral of the eparchy of Irinjalakuda in India. It presently exists under the nomenclature and the Canonical Status as Cathedral in the Wake of the Origin of the New Eparchy,effected by the amalgamation of the two independent and important parishes of the locality,namely,St. George’s Forane Church and St. Mary’s church,which were amicably situated side by side for about a century.
St. Thomas College,Pala is a government aided college of higher education located in Pala town,Kerala,India. It was founded on 7 August 1950 by the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Palai. The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam and was re-accredited with A++ grade by NAAC in February 2021. The college is recognized under the sections 2(f) and 12B of the UGC Act 1956. The Government of Kerala has recognized the college as a Special Grade College.
The Eparchy of Palai is a Syro-Malabar Catholic ecclesiastical territory or eparchy of the Catholic Church with an area of 1166 km2 comprising the Meenachil taluk and a few villages of the neighbouring taluks in Kottayam,Ernakulam,and Idukki districts of central Kerala in South India. The faithful of this eparchy,numbering 326,742,belong to the ancient St. Thomas Christian community. The seat of the bishop is the St. Thomas Cathedral based in the town of Palai. The current bishop is Mar Joseph Kallarangatt,serving since March 2004. Mar Jacob Muricken has been auxiliary bishop since 2012.

George Thomas Kottukapally of Pala,Kottayam,Kerala,India,was a Member of Parliament,philanthropist,one of South India's largest plantation owners,public intellectual,an Indian independence activist and a member of the Indian National Congress including having taken part in the Indian Independence Movement through the Non co-operation movement in 1921. Post India's Independence in 1947,Kottukapally was elected as the Municipal Chairman,a position equivalent to that of a Mayor for the municipal township of Pala,Kottayam,Kerala which he held between 1948 and 1953. Further,he was elected as an Indian Member of Parliament representing the Indian National Congress party in the 1st Lok Sabha and the 2nd Lok Sabha from 1953 till 1962 for the erst-while constituency of Muvattupuzha which consisted of the whole of Idukki,parts of Kottayam,Pathanamthitta and Chalakudy. He was also India's representative to the United Nations in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's Delegation in 1958.
The Evangelistic Association of the East is a registered Non-governmental organization headquartered at Perumbavoor,Kerala working in the Educational,Social Service and Spirituality sectors. The organization has Educational Institutions,Orphanages and an Arch Diocese affiliated with Syriac Orthodox Church across South India. It was founded as the first missionary association of Syriac Orthodox Church in 1924 by 'Malphono Nasiho' Geevarghese Cor-Episcopa Athunkal(1902-1997) and later registered in 1949 under Indian Societies Registration Act. XXI of 1860. The E.A.E Arch Diocese is under the direct control of Ignatius Aphrem II,Patriarch օf the Syriac Orthodox Church․
Vattavayalil Joseph Kurian was the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Kerala in India was the Managing Director of Cochin International Airport. He belongs to the 1983 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS),Kerala cadre.
