Panza Kick Boxing [note 1] is a French fighting video game developed by Futura and originally published by Loriciels in 1991. The game is a video game adaptation of Thai kick boxing. It received high critical praise particularly for its graphics and gameplay while receiving minor criticism for its repetitiveness. A sequel with various names to distance from the Panza endorsement, including Best of the Best: Championship Karate in the United States, was released a few years later.
The player controls a kick boxer who fights their way up the league table defeating opponents, while their ultimate goal is to challenge the Champion André Panza and take his title. The Gymnasium section allows the player to train their character to improve one of three skills - strength, resistance, and reflex - which will improve their performance in future fights. [2]
The game contains a total of 56 kicks and punches, which players can assign to one of the 8 joystick movements to customise their boxer's fighting style. Moves inspired by real-life kick boxing include long sweeps, short jabs, and crunching kicks. [3]
The two boxers are viewed from ring level, and a referee is present to call 'break' or count you out; each bout takes at least three rounds and each round ends either when a boxer is KO-ed or the timer runs out. A row of lights above the ring are a visual cue to how close the player is to losing, which extinguish as they are hit. [3]
The game was developed by Futura. It was endorsed by French kickboxing then-champion André Panza (fr), who also supplied technical advice. [2] It contains realistic attacking and defensive moves, and around 600 frames of animation. [1]
Panza Kick Boxing was originally published by Loriciels in France in 1991, and subsequently by NEC Technologies in the United States [4] [5] and Kixx (the budget range of U.S. Gold) in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy. [6] The game was a new venture for NEC, which has previously built a business off their TV Sports series of events. [7] Additionally, the game was published on the TurboGrafx-16 by Turbo Technologies, a joint venture by NEC and Hudson Soft. [8]

ST Action and TurboPlay described it as "tremendous" [29] and "fantastic" [30] respectively, while Amiga Computing deemed it "extremely good". [3] Adam Smith from Rock Paper Shotgun praised the animations for the referee. [31] Games Village called it "one of the best Kickboxing simulators ever produced in history". [32]
Mixed reviews were offered by reviewers like Tony Horgan of Amiga User International who criticised the game's repetitiveness which he argued is standard for this genre. [22]
Italian site Games Village discussed how the "modest...pixel portrait of the solemn André Panza" on the cover juxtaposed the quality of the game in a larger discussion about how "the palatability of a video game is not necessarily linked to the actual value of its gameplay, nor to its technical prowess". [33]
Commenting on the contemporary context in which the game was developed, TurboPlay suggested that with Champions Forever Boxing (1991) and Panza Kick Boxing saturating the TurboGrafx-16 market, it was unlikely for Cinemaware to release their TV Sports Boxing on the platform. [34]
A 1992 sequel was announced in October 1992 tentatively titled Panza Kick Boxing 2. [35] The game, closer in design to a re-release, was published in Japan as The Kick Boxing (Micro World) [36] [37] and Super Kickboxing (Electro Brain) [38] as Panza was unknown in the country. [39] This updated version was later imported [40] in the United States by Electro Brain as Best of the Best: Championship Karate in July 1993. [41] [42] The game has also been subtitled Panza Gold Edition. [43]
Amiga Joker noted that while the gameplay, graphics, sound and options screen had been updated from the original, "apart from the title there are only a few real innovations", describing it as a "deceptive package". [44] MegaTech suggested the latter title was an effort to tie the game to the 1989 martial arts film Best of the Best. [45] Sega Zone described it as "one of the most differingly-named [sic] games in the history of gaming". [46] The Australian Commodore and Amiga Review noted that while the game is officially a sequel, it's "almost a reproduction". [43]
In contrast to the original, this version received a mixed reception in Europe, [47] [48] [49] [50] and Asia. [51] [52] [53] [54] [55] [56] However, actor and martial artist Ron Yuan deemed it the "best SNES fighting game from a purely technical martial arts point of view", [57] while Portuguese magazine Ação Games described it as "one of the best games of the genre" and one that fans of Luta Livre would enjoy. [58] Super Action further deemed it "classic kick boxing action". [59]
The TurboGrafx-16, known as the PC Engine outside North America, is a home video game console designed by Hudson Soft and sold by NEC Home Electronics. It was the first console marketed in the fourth generation, commonly known as the 16-bit era, though the console has an 8-bit central processing unit (CPU) coupled with a 16-bit graphics processor. It was released in Japan in 1987 and in North America in 1989. In Europe the Japanese model was unofficially imported and distributed in the United Kingdom and France from 1988. It Came from the Desert is a 1989 action-adventure game by Cinemaware. It was originally released for the Amiga, but later ported to MS-DOS, as well as released in distinctly different forms to consoles. The TurboGrafx-16 release is distinctly different from the computer versions, in terms of gameplay and presentation. An expansion set Antheads: It Came from the Desert II was released in 1990.
TurboPlay Magazine is a bi-monthly, U.S.-based video game magazine which was published by L.F.P. from June/July 1990 through August/September 1992. It was available via subscription only. A total of 14 issues were released, on schedule. TurboPlay exclusively covered NEC's line of video game consoles, especially the North American models: TurboGrafx-16, TurboGrafx-CD (TG-CD), Turbo Duo (DUO) and the handheld TurboExpress. NEC's SuperGrafx also received some minor coverage.
Street Fighter is a 1987 arcade video game by Japanese developer and publisher Capcom. It has a high degree of graphic violence. In 2020, the NES port was re-released on the Nintendo Switch Online service, while the Genesis port was re-released on the Piko Collection Collection 1 cartridge for the Evercade.
Brutal: Paws of Fury is a 2D fighting game published by GameTek in 1994. The game features a cast of various anthropomorphic animals as selectable fighters. It also features the ability to learn new attacks and save them via passwords. Originally a Sega CD exclusive, it was later ported to other game consoles.
Valis III is a 1990 action-platform video game originally developed by Laser Soft, published by Telenet Japan and NEC for the TurboGrafx-CD. A Sega Genesis version was released in 1991. It is the third entry in the Valis series. It stars Yuko Asou, a Japanese teenage schoolgirl chosen as the Valis warrior and wielder of the mystical Valis sword after the events of Valis II. King Glames, wielder of the sword Leethus, leads denizens of the dark world to conquer both Vecanti and Earth, seeking refuge for his people amid the destruction of their planet. Together with the demon warrior-maiden Cham and her sister Valna, Yuko must prevent Glames from destroying both worlds. Through the journey, the player explores and searches for items and power-ups while fighting enemies and defeating bosses.
Loriciel was a French video game developing company that was active from 1983 to the early 1990s. The name is a combination of logiciel, the French word for software, and Oric which was the first computer they wrote software for.
Valis II is a 1989 action-platform video game originally developed by Laser Soft, published by Telenet Japan and NEC for the PC Engine CD-ROM²/TurboGrafx-CD. A home computer version was released for PC-8801, MSX2, PC-9801 and X68000. A super deformed-style remake was also released in 1992 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It is the second entry in the eponymous series. It stars Yuko Asou, a Japanese schoolgirl teenager chosen to become the Valis warrior by wielding the titular mystical sword, after defeating the demon lord Rogles. The dream world Vecanti fell under the rule of emperor Megas, whose hatred towards his brother Rogles and bloodthirsty tendencies seeks to wipe out traces of the former tyrant, including his supporters. Gameplay varies between each version but all share similar elements, as the player explores and search for items and power-ups, while fighting enemies and defeat bosses.
Best of the Best: Championship Karate is a 1992 kick boxing game that features black belt kick boxing masters. The object is to win the kick boxing championship by defeating an array of kick boxing masters in a series of fighting matches. The Sega Genesis version is one of the few games to offer support for the Sega Activator motion controller.
Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes is a 1989 role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom. It is the sixth game in the Dragon Slayer series and the first in The Legend of Heroes franchise.
Bomberman, also known as Dyna Blaster in Europe, is an action-maze video game originally developed and published by Hudson Soft for the PC Engine in Japan on 7 December 1990 and later in North America for the TurboGrafx-16 by NEC in 1991. Belonging to the Bomberman franchise, it is a re-imagining of the first game in the series starring White Bomberman on a quest to rescue Lisa, the kidnapped daughter of his inventor Dr. Mitsumori, from the castle of Black Bomberman while defeating evil monsters and villains that work for him. The game was later ported to home computers, each one featuring changes compared to the original version. Conversions for other platforms were in development but never released. The title garnered positive reception from critics since its initial release on the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 and later on home computers.
TaleSpin is a platform game for the Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, and Game Gear. It is based on the Disney animated series of the same name. Sega released the game on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1992 and Game Gear in 1993. NEC made its own game for their TurboGrafx-16 system in 1991.
