Paradnatoceras is an extinct straight-shelled cephalopod genus that lived in what would become China during the Ordovician from 478.6 to about 461 mya, existing for approximately 17.6 Ma. [1]

Taxonomy

Paradnatoceras is included in the Orthocerida according to Sepkoski (2002). [2] Inclusion of the Orthocerida in the subclass Orthoceratoidea is according to more recent taxonomic opinion. [3] In older taxonomies,e.g., [4] the Orthocerida were included in the Nautiloidea.

Morphology

The shell is usually long, and may be straight ("orthoconic") or gently curved. In life, these animals may have been similar to the modern squid, except for the long shell.

Fossil distribution

Fossil distribution is exclusive to central and southern China.

Kionoceras is an extinct nautiloid cephalopod genus included in the orthocerid family Kionoceratidae with scattered worldwide distribution from the Middle Ordovician to the Lower Permian. Kionoceratids are orthocerids with prominent longitudinal ornamentation on their shells, sometimes augmented by secondary transverse ornamentation. Orthocerids are, of course, prehistoric nautiloides with generally straight and elongate shells, mostly with central or subcentral siphuncles.

The Genus Hemichoanella is a small, extinct, orthoconic nautiloid cephalopod from the Lower Ordovician of Western Australia assigned to the orthoceratoid family, Baltoceratidae. Hemichoanella and the Baltoceratidae are part of the subclass of once diverse and numerous shelled cephalopods known as the Nautiloidea.

Orthoceratoidea Extinct subclass of cephalopods

Orthoceratoidea is a subclass, formerly considered an infraclass or a superorder, that comprises Cephalopoda orders that have orthoconic to slightly cyrtoconic shells and central to subcentral siphuncles in which there may be internal deposits. Currently, Orthoceratoidea comprises the orders Dissidocerida, Ascocerida, Pseudorthocerida, Lituitida and Orthocerida.

The Orthocerataceae is a superfamily of orthocerid cephalopods that lived from the late Early Ordovician to the Early Cretaceous, but is no longer in general use.
