Parmjit Singh Gill (born 20 December 1966) is a British Liberal Democrat politician. As Member of Parliament for Leicester South from July 2004 to May 2005,he was the first ethnic-minority Liberal Democrat MP.
He was first elected as Liberal Democrat councillor for Leicester City Council's Stoneygate Ward,before being elected to the House of Commons at the Leicester South by-election on 15 July 2004. [1] He contested the seat again at the 2005 general election,but this time came second to the Labour Party candidate,Sir Peter Soulsby. [2] He continued to serve as councillor for Stoneygate Ward until he was defeated in May 2011.
He was initially selected to run as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the 2011 Leicester South by-election after Soulsby stood down to run for mayor for Leicester. However,he stood down after a short time,citing family pressures and was replaced by Zuffar Haq. [3]
He works as a local authority information management and security consultant for Charnwood Borough Council. Prior to that he worked as a data protection administrator for Leicester City Council.
Gill was the Liberal Democrat candidate in the 2023 Leicester mayoral election. [4] He came in third place. [5]
He is married to Juliet Gill,and the couple have a son and daughter.

A by-election was held for the United Kingdom Parliament seat of Leicester South on 15 July 2004. It was triggered by the death of Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) Jim Marshall,who died on 27 May 2004,shortly before the local and European elections in June. The by-election was won by Parmjit Singh Gill of the Liberal Democrats,over-turning a Labour majority of 13,243 votes at the 2001 general election.
Sir Peter Alfred Soulsby is a British Labour Party politician serving as Mayor of Leicester since 2011. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicester South from 2005 until he resigned his seat in April 2011,in order to contest the new post of mayor. He served as Leader of Leicester City Council from 1981 to 1994 and from 1996 to 1999.

The Leicester South by-election was held to elect a Member of Parliament (MP) of the United Kingdom for the Leicester South constituency on 5 May 2011. It was prompted by the resignation of Sir Peter Soulsby of the Labour Party,who stood down from Parliament to contest the election for Mayor of Leicester. Soulsby was appointed Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead on 1 April 2011,and the writ for a new election was issued on 5 April. The election was won by Labour Party candidate Jon Ashworth.

Notably,these elections were the first to be held under the Elections Act 2022,a new voter identification law that is controversial,meaning voters were required to show photo ID when attending a polling station.
The 2023 Leicester City Council election took place on 4 May 2023 to elect all 54 members of Leicester City Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections,and the election for the directly elected Mayor of Leicester.
