"Particula" is a song performed by American electronic music trio Major Lazer from their EP Know No Better (2017). [1] [2] [3] The song features DJ Maphorisa and vocals by South African rapper Nasty C, Nigerian artists Ice Prince and Patoranking, and Nigerian-American hip hop recording artist Jidenna. [4] [5]

Music video

The music video, directed by South African filmmaker Adriaan Louw, was unveiled on October 17, 2017 via the official YouTube channel of the band and major streaming networks. [7] [8] The visual offers an alternative view on a 70's inspired culture. [9] The video was filmed and shot in Johannesburg, South Africa. [10] [11] [12] As of April 2018, the video has surpassed 50 million views.

Reception

Adriaan Louw of Word Africa Production in a press release said they "wanted it to feel like we were shooting a documentary in the 70's". He added, "I've always wanted to shoot a film like this in Johannesburg. It was creating an ideal world within Joburg that was based in the 70's. I wanted it to feel like we were shooting a documentary in the 70's of the culture that could have been in a city where Disco, Funk, Fela Kuti was everywhere. We worked with some great artist who featured on the track. Jidenna flew in all the way from the states and Ice Prince came down from Nigeria. Was also my first time working with fellow South African's Nasty C and DJ Maphorisa." [13] [14]

Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie, better known by his stage name Patoranking, is a Nigerian reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Ebute Metta community of Lagos, he grew up sharing one room with his parents and five siblings. His modest upbringing and close relationship with his family instilled a drive and determination to create a better future, and led him to music He started his music career doing underground collaborations, with artists such as XProject, Konga, Slam and Reggie Rockstone. He signed a record deal with K-Solo's Igberaga Records in 2010, releasing "Up in D Club" under the outfit. Patoranking became a protégé of Dem Mama Records after collaborating with Timaya on his song "Alubarika". In February 2014, he signed a record deal with Foston Musik and released "Girlie O", a single that put him in the limelight. On 9 February 2015, Patoranking announced on Instagram that he signed a distribution deal with VP Records. on September 28 Patoranking released a song titled Abule which he released ahead of his album scheduled to be released later in 2020. He once said, in 2020 that he once got inspiration for song on a football pitch while playing football.

Jidenna Theodore Mobisson, known mononymously as Jidenna, is a Nigerian-American rapper, singer and songwriter. He signed with Janelle Monáe's record label Wondaland Arts Society, an imprint of Epic Records to release his debut single, "Classic Man" in 2015. The song peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, received double platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and was followed up with the single "Yoga" that same year. Both of which preceded the release of Wondaland's debut compilation project, The Eephus (2015). Jidenna's debut studio album, The Chief (2017) peaked at number 38 on the Billboard 200. His second album, 85 to Africa (2019) explored the afro fusion musical style.

The 26th Annual South African Music Awards were held on 3–7 August 2020.
