"I Swear" is a song by Nigerian rapper Ice Prince. It was released as the fourth single from his second studio album, Fire of Zamani (2013). American rapper French Montana contributes a rap verse to it, and Nigerian singer Shaydee provides guest vocals. The song was produced by Chopstix and released by Chocolate City. Background and recording

"I Swear" was recorded in Nigeria except for French Montana's part, which was recorded at Big Daddy's Studio in New York City. [5] On September 7, 2013, Ice Prince uploaded a video to YouTube highlighting he and Montana's studio session. [6] [7] [8]

In an interview with HipTV, Ice Prince elaborated on his collaboration with French Montana, saying, "I got introduced to him by a Nigerian guy. We just got introduced backstage at his show and he said this cat's cool. From then on, we went together, we got in the studio, recorded the song". [9] [10]

Music video

The music video for "I Swear" was filmed in the United States by J R Saint. It was released on October 8, 2013, a month after the audio release. [11] [12]

Critical reception

"I Swear" received positive reviews from music critics. Ogagus, writing a review for Jaguda.com, called the song a "groovy rap tune" and said Ice Prince "can hold his own with the best of them when it comes to rap globally." [13] Reviewing for The Guardian newspaper, Phiona Okumu praised Ice Prince for "trading rhymes" with French Montana. [14] [15] OkayAfrica commended both rappers for "namedropping and channeling some of their contemporaries over a syncopated beat". [16]

His debut studio album Everybody Loves Ice Prince was released in 2011. It was supported by three singles: "Oleku", "Superstar" and "Juju". In 2013, Ice Prince released Fire of Zamani as his second studio album. The album contained the singles "Aboki", "More", "Gimme Dat" and "I Swear". On 1 July 2015, Ice Prince was announced as the vice president of Chocolate City. He held the position until he left the label in 2016. He has collaborated with top African rappers like Navio of Uganda, Khaligraph Jones of Kenya, AKA of South Africa, Sarkodie of Ghana among others.

He voluntarily exited the Chocolate City deal in 2013 and announced the launch of his independent label, Jagz Nation. Comprising eighteen tracks, Fire of Zamani features guest appearances from Sunny Neji, Wale, M.I, Chip, Ruby Gyang, Wizkid, French Montana, Jesse Jagz, Olamide, Sound Sultan, Burna Boy, Yung L, Jeremiah Gyang, Shaydee, and Morell. The album's production was primarily handled by Chopstix, a member of Grip Boiz City, along with additional production from Don Jazzy, Jay Sleek, Sammy Gyang, and E-Kelly.
