CB5 is the twenty-second mixtape by Moroccan-American rapper French Montana. It was released through EMPIRE on November 20, 2020. The mixtape features guest appearances from Jim Jones, Lil Durk, the late Pop Smoke, Jack Harlow, the late Chinx, Rafi Malice, Max B, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Benny the Butcher, Montana's younger brother Zak, ASAP Rocky, LGP Qua, Lil Mosey, and Currensy. [1] [2] On November 27, 2020, Montana released the deluxe edition of the mixtape with five additional tracks, but ended up taking it down a few days later for unknown reasons. [3]

Background

The title of the mixtape is an acronym for "Coke Boys 5". It is the fifth installment of French Montana's Coke Boys mixtape series. Coke Boys is also the name of the artist's record label, which is where the name originates from. The first word also stands for "Creation of Kings Everywhere". Signed to the label, Montana had artists like Chinx and Max B, and previously Lil Durk.

Release and promotion

On October 31, 2020, French Montana confirmed on Twitter that the mixtape had been finished and ready to go, promoting some merchandise. [5] He confirmed the release date on November 11, 2020 in an Instagram story, followed by a pre-order link back to Twitter on November 16, 2020, which revealed its official artwork. [6] Finally, he revealed the track listing on November 18, 2020. [7]

Singles

The mixtape's lead single, "Double G", featuring late American rapper Pop Smoke, was released on October 30, 2020. [8] Following it, "Wave Blues", featuring American rapper Benny the Butcher, the second single, was released on November 9, 2020, which was French Montana's 36th birthday. [9] "Hot Boy Bling", featuring American rappers Jack Harlow and Lil Durk, was sent to rhythmic contemporary radio as the third and final single on January 5, 2021. [10]

Critical reception

DJ First Class of Revolt compared the mixtape to French Montana's previous projects, stating that it "is as solid as solid can be". [11] Quincy of Ratings Game Music gave the mixtape a rating of a D; he praised the different patterns and each featured artist's frequency, opining that Montana "knows how to play orchestrator really well" and that "he channels his old self, he goes toe to toe with true lyricists, and he actually blesses us with hooks that will probably turn clubs upside down". Rory William Quigley, known professionally as Harry Fraud, is an American record producer. Primarily a hip hop producer, Fraud began producing at an early age and began interning at a recording studio after graduating from high school. First discovered by French Montana during a recording session in Chinatown in early 2009, Fraud has since worked on each of his releases and become a fixture in the New York underground hip hop scene. He was credited on Montana's 2012 single, "Shot Caller", which became one of the most added tracks on urban contemporary radio during 2011–2012.

Lionel Du Fon Pickens, better known by his stage name Chinx, was an American rapper. He was a member of The Rockaway Riot Squad alongside fellow slain rapper Stack Bundles. Chinx later joined French Montana's Coke Boys Records, gaining recognition for his appearances on the Coke Boys mixtapes and the Cocaine Riot mixtape series. He was killed in a drive-by shooting in Jamaica, Queens on May 17, 2015. Two men have since been arrested in the case.

MC4 is the twenty-first mixtape by American rapper French Montana. MC4 was originally intended to be released as his second studio album. It was released on November 5, 2016, by Coke Boys Records, Bad Boy Records, Maybach Music Group and Epic Records. However, the album's release was canceled after Target unofficially released the album on CD on its original release date of August 19, 2016, two months before the album was set to release, which was later leaked online in its entirety. Subsequently, the album was heavily bootlegged. It was French Montana's last project released by Maybach Music Group before leaving the label.

Jungle Rules is the second studio album by Moroccan-American rapper French Montana. It was released on July 14, 2017 by Coke Boys, Bad Boy and Epic Records. The album succeeds his mixtape MC4 (2016), which was originally intended to be his second studio album. It features guest appearances from Future, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, Young Thug, Pharrell Williams, Quavo, T.I., Swae Lee, Marc E. Bassy, Chinx and Max B, among others. Production derives from frequent collaborator Harry Fraud, as well as Scott Storch, Detail, London on da Track, Mike Will Made It and others. The album was supported by the singles "No Pressure" featuring Future and "Unforgettable" featuring Swae Lee.

"Go Crazy" is a song by American singer Chris Brown and American rapper Young Thug, from their collaborative mixtape Slime & B, released on May 5, 2020. After it became the only charting song from the mixtape, it was officially released as a single on May 19, 2020. The song is a trap-infused R&B record, with production that samples the Showboys's 1986 single "Drag Rap", for which the Showboys are credited as writers. The official remix of the song was released on February 19, 2021, and features fellow American rappers Future, Lil Durk, and Latto.

"Enjoy Yourself" is a song by the American rapper Pop Smoke, featuring the Colombian singer Karol G, from the former's posthumous first studio album, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon (2020) as well as the EP of the same name (2020). The song was written by the performers with Rico Love, French Montana, Pierre Meador, Palaze and Luci G. It was released as a promotional single on July 2, 2020. A remix featuring the Nigerian singer Burna Boy in place of Karol G was included on the deluxe version of the album on July 20, 2020.

"Iced Out Audemars" is a song by American rapper Pop Smoke featuring fellow American rapper Dafi Woo, from the deluxe version of the former's posthumous debut studio album, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon (2020). The song was written by the rappers alongside producer Rico Beats and additional producer BigBroLGND. Coke Boys 6 is a collaborative mixtape by Moroccan-American rapper French Montana and American disc jockey DJ Drama. It was released through Coke Boys Records on January 6, 2023. The mixtape contains guest appearances from Stove God Cooks, Cheeze, the late Chinx, Smooky Margielaa, ASAP Rocky, Vory, Max B, Rob49, Ayoub, Jeremih, Benny the Butcher, DThang, EST Gee, Big30, Nav, King Combs, Kodak Black, and Pheelz. The "Money Heist Edition" of the mixtape was released simultaneously alongside the release of the original version. It contains additional guest appearances from Kenzo B, Mr.Chicken, LGP Qua, Tory Lanez, Chinese Kitty, YNP Maine, CJ, T Dot, Bando Gz, Viso, and Jhettaheat. Maninder Singh Kalyan, professionally known as Byg Byrd is an Indo-Canadian record producer and record executive. He is also associated with Punjabi music. He produced for variety of artists notably French Montana, Chinx Drugz, Lil Kim, Lil Durk and Jim Jones, along with Punjabi artists including Sidhu Moose Wala, Tarsem Jassar, Sunny Malton, Jazzy B and Prem Dhillon.
