Pathiyoor Sankarankutty is a Kathakali musician from Kerala, India. He received many awards including Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award 2018 and Kerala Kalamandalam award 2009.

Biography

Sankarankutty was born on December 30, 1964, as the fourth child of Mathiltheketil Krishna Pillai who was a Kathakali singer and Mazhupeil Lakshmikuttyamma in Keerikad, Kayamkulam, Alappuzha District. [1] [2] Although Krishna Pilla did not interested to teach his son Kathakali music, seeing his love for Kathakali he decided that the stage would be better for him. [3] While studying in the 5th standard, he studied Kathakali acting under the tutelage of Parameswaran Nair and Shankarapilla. [1] In 1978, he made his Kathakali acting debut as Sri Krishna in 'Gurudakshina' at the Avur Sri Krishna Swamy Temple. [1] After that, he played many child roles in various Kathakali programs. [1]

After his pre-degree studies in commerce, he passed Ganabhushanam diploma from RLV College of Music and Fine Arts and then attended a short term music class at Kerala Kalamandalam to study Kathakali music. [4] [3] It was his guru Gangadharan who encouraged him to take Kathakali music seriously. [4] At Kalamandalam he studied Kathakali music under many noted artists including Madambi Subramanian Namboodiri, Kalamandalam Ramawaryar and Kalamandalam Gangadharan. [2]

Personal life

Sankarankutty and his wife Manju have two sons Shyamkrishna and Yadukrishna. [1]

Career

Pathiyoor Sankarankutty is one of the disciple of Kalamandalam Hyderali. [5] Sankarankutty also followed the Carnatic touch given to Kathakali music by musicians including his guru Hyderali. [6] Besides performing in Kerala and outside Kerala, he has also performed in countries like Spain, Brazil, Netherlands, Germany and France. [5] For nearly twenty five years he has sung the accompaniment music for kathakali performances of Kalamandalam Gopi. [1]

In 1990, Shankarankutty became a music teacher in Pakalkuri near Kottarakkara. [7] From 2003, he is working as a music teacher at Sandarshan Kathakali Vidyalaya, Ambalapuzha. [8]

His shruti-aligned music was glistened by a velvety voice, easy reach of the three octaves and command over stage proceedings that gave him a massive fan following, even as his form received an abrupt setback in 1990 when he suffered a major ailment from which he could never recover fully.

Kalamandalam Neelakantan Nambisan (1920–1985) was a trend-setter Kathakali musician who played a crucial role in remoulding the aesthetics of singing for the classical dance-drama of Kerala, south India. Nambisan imbibed a set of fresh musical ideas from his epoch-making guru Mundaya Venkitakrishna Bhagavatar(1881-1957), developed them to sound even better and handed them over to a set of disciples, most of whom gained name and fame sooner or later.

Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair (1928–2007) was an eminent Kathakali exponent, equally known for his capacities as a tutor, theoretician and author of a few authentic texts on the classical dance-drama from Kerala in south India. A son of the Kathakali guru Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon, Padmanabhan Nair was one of the early-batch students in Kerala Kalamandalam, where he subsequently joined as a teacher and retired as its principal in 1990. He died on 3 April 2007, at his home in Shoranur, near his alma mater, where he led his post-professorial life with wife and Mohiniyattam exponent and guru, Kalamandalam Satyabhama.

Kalamandalam Gangadhran was a Kathakali musician from Kerala. His unique tenor and accent has earned him a large audience both within and outside Kerala. He was the most prominent disciple of Kalamandalam Neelakandan Nambeesan, and the Master of the many later generations of Kathakali Musicians. He was a visiting professor at Margi, an organization dedicated to the revival of Kathakali and Kutiyattom, two classical art forms of Kerala. Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award is an award given by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, an autonomous organisation for the encouragement, preservation, and documentation of the performing arts of Kerala, set up by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala. Instituted in 1962, the awards are given in the categories of music, dance, theatre, other traditional arts, and for contribution/scholarship in performing arts. The award consists of Rs. 30,000, a citation and a plaque. The recipients of the award are also conferred the title Kalasree.
