Patrick's Parabox is a puzzle video game created by indie developer Patrick Traynor. Originating as a short demo built in 2020, the game was expanded and released on 29 March 2022 for PC, followed by a release on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 on 26 July 2023. The game centers around playing with infinity and recursion by pushing boxes into and out of other boxes, sometimes in and out of itself, in order to win the level by putting boxes into their spaces.

Gameplay

The player can enter and exit the blue box and push the yellow box into and out of it. The goal is to put both boxes into the marked spaces and then move the player-character to the space marked with a face. Patrick's Parabox gameplay.gif

In each level, the player is presented with a puzzle containing boxes and marked spaces. One of the boxes represents the player and it can be controlled. Movement in the game is Sokoban-like where the player moves and pushes boxes around. In addition to this, the player can also enter and exit boxes. If a box is pushed into another box that has an opening on its edge, the box will shrink to fit inside. Conversely, if a box is pushed towards an open edge of the box it is currently in, it will grow and move outside of the box. In some levels, it is possible for a box to contain itself leading to recursion. Because of this, there are ways to create a paradox, such as pushing a box outside of itself. To win the level, all the marked spaces must be covered by boxes and the player must end up on the space marked as the player's goal. [1] The levels follow a main "path" in the game along with side levels as optional challenges. The game contains 364 levels. [2]

Development and release

The idea for the game first came to Traynor when he was part of the game development club at UC San Diego. It started as a Sokoban-like stealth game with a co-op mechanic where one player can push blocks around while the other player is shrunken-down and can move inside the blocks. Traynor picked up this idea four years later and decided to code it up for any number of layers as a programming challenge. The core concepts of the game were inspired by juner's Sokosoko on itch.io. During development, the game lent itself to a "traditional puzzle game format", where each puzzle introduces a new concept and builds upon previous concepts. [3]

The game was developed with Unity. The graphics and animations of the game were designed by Traynor, [3] and the music was composed by Priscilla Snow. [4]

A demo version of the game was released on 16 June 2020. [5] Patrick's Parabox was released on 29 March 2022 for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS, followed by a release for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 on 26 July 2023. [2] [6]

Reception

Patrick's Parabox won the "Developer Choice" award at the 2019 IndieCade Festival. [9] It also won the "Excellence in Design" award at the 2020 IGF Awards. [10] According to review aggregator Metacritic, it received "generally favorable" reviews. [7]

Eurogamer writer Edward Hawkes said that the game was "morish, and captivating and never monotonous" [1] and Katharine Castle of Rock, Paper, Shotgun described it as an "infinitely pleasing puzzle game." [2] The game also received positive reviews on PCGamer [4] and Kotaku . [11]

Chants of Sennaar is a 2023 adventure video game developed by Rundisc and published by Focus Entertainment. It was released for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on 5 September 2023. The game is inspired by Heaven's Vault and Captain Blood. The gameplay mostly revolves around solving puzzles and minigames to translate fictional languages, but it also features stealth gameplay. The plot is inspired by the Tower of Babel myth, with the player translating between various different tribes that do not understand each other, as they speak different languages.

A Monster's Expedition (Through Puzzling Exhibitions) is a 2020 puzzle video game developed and published by Draknek & Friends. Gameplay involves exploring a series of islands by solving Sokoban-based puzzles. The player navigates a two-dimensional grid, rolling logs to create bridges and rafts to traverse between islands. The islands comprise a museum of human civilization, featuring exhibits of everyday objects, accompanied by humorous descriptions written from the perspective of an outsider. The game incorporates open world elements, having a nonlinear, branching path of levels, but is primarily a puzzle game. Developed over more than three years, the game was first released in September 2020 for iOS and macOS through Apple Arcade and Windows, and later for Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
