The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is an agency of the United States Department of Commerce whose mission is to promote American innovation and industrial competitiveness. NIST's activities are organized into physical science laboratory programs that include nanoscale science and technology,engineering,information technology,neutron research,material measurement,and physical measurement. From 1901 to 1988,the agency was named the National Bureau of Standards.

Nordenberg served as the Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law between 1985 and 1993 and other various administrative positions before becoming interim Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh in 1995,a position which became permanent the following year. He became known as Nordy to many Pitt students,who voted to name a recreation center and arcade in the William Pitt Union as Nordy's Place,and is also the namesake of the university's endowed Nordenberg Scholarships and the Nordenberg Hall dormitory on the university's campus.

Katharine Blodgett Gebbie was an American astrophysicist and civil servant. She was the founding Director of the Physical Measurement Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST),and of its two immediate predecessors,the Physics Laboratory and the Center for Atomic,Molecular and Optical Physics,both for which she was the only Director. During her 22 years of management of these institutions,four of its scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 2015,the NIST Katharine Blodgett Gebbie Laboratory Building in Boulder,Colorado was named in her honor.

She received the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal for producing an entirely new route to synthesizing hydrogen-storage materials for fuel cells based on the complex chemistry of amines and boranes.
Winnie Kwai-Wah Wong-Ng is a Chinese-American physical chemist. She is a research chemist at the ceramics division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Her research includes energy applications,crystallography,thermoelectric standards,metrology,and data,sorbent materials for sustainability,and high throughput combinatorial approach for novel materials discovery and property optimization for energy conversion applications. She is a fellow of the International Centre for Diffraction Data,American Ceramic Society,American Crystallographic Association,and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Wong-Ng was twice awarded the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal.
The Samuel Wesley Stratton Award has been annually presented by the National Institute of Standards and Technology since 1962 for "an unusually significant research contribution to science or engineering that merits the acclaim of the scientific world and supports NIST's mission objectives". The award was named after first director of NIST,then NBS,Samuel Wesley Stratton. The award is considered NIST's highest award for fundamental research.
Laurie Ellen Locascio is an American biomedical engineer,analytical chemist,and former academic administrator serving as the under secretary of commerce for standards and technology and the director of National Institute of Standards and Technology. From 2017 to 2021,Locascio was vice president for research of University of Maryland,College Park and University of Maryland,Baltimore.
