Pauline O'Reilly (born 1974/1975) is an Irish Green Party politician who has served as a Senator for the Labour Panel since June 2020, [2] [3] and chair of the Green Party since December 2021.

Early life and education

O'Reilly is a qualified solicitor. She is chair of the Galway Steiner National School.

Political career

O'Reilly was elected to Galway City Council at the 2019 local elections. [4]

O'Reilly stood unsuccessfully in Galway West at the 2020 general election. She won 6% of first preference votes and finished ninth in the five seat constituency. [5] [6]

She was elected to Seanad Éireann in 2020 as a senator for the Labour Panel. [7] She is the Green Party spokesperson for Education and Higher Education. [8] She is the leader of the Green Party in the Seanad. [9]

On 24 March 2021, O'Reilly was one of three Green Party senators to table a motion of no confidence against party chair Hazel Chu, after Chu announced her candidacy in a Seanad by-election as an independent, with O'Reilly stating she does not believe it's appropriate "to run as an independent candidate and also to be a chair of a party that’s in government and is supporting government candidates". [10]

On 16 December 2021, O'Reilly was elected as Chair of the Irish Green Party, succeeding Chu. [11] O'Reilly was re-elected to the position of party chair on 26 November 2023. [12]

O'Reilly was the Green Party's candidate for the Midlands–North-West constituency at the 2024 European Parliament election. [12] O'Reilly received 13,710 (2.0%) first preference votes but was not elected. [13]

Personal life

O'Reilly has two children and practices unschooling with them. [14] [15] Her husband works from home. [16]

Fidelma Healy Eames is an Irish former politician. She was first elected to Seanad Éireann in 2007 by the Labour Panel. As a member of the Reform Alliance group, she sat as an Independent senator, having lost the Fine Gael parliamentary party whip in July 2013. In March 2016 she announced her retirement from politics. Hazel Chu is an Irish Green Party politician who has been a member of Dublin City Council since May 2019. She was chair of the Green Party from December 2019 to December 2021. She was the first Irish-born person of Chinese descent elected to political office on the island of Ireland. She served as Lord Mayor of Dublin from 2020 to 2021, and in doing so became the first person of Chinese ethnicity to be mayor of a European capital.

The 26th Seanad has been in office since June 2020. The 2020 Seanad election followed the 2020 general election to the 33rd Dáil on 8 February. The Constitution of Ireland required a general election for Seanad Éireann, the senate of the Oireachtas, to take place no later than ninety days after the dissolution of the 32nd Dáil on 14 January 2020. There are 60 seats in the Seanad: 43 were elected on five vocational panels by serving politicians, for which polling closed on 30 March 2020; 6 were elected in two university constituencies, for which polling closed on 31 March 2020; and 11 were nominated by the Taoiseach on 27 June 2020. It will remain in office until the close of poll for the 27th Seanad, which is scheduled for 30 January 2025.

Róisín Garvey is an Irish Green Party politician who has served as a Senator since June 2020, after being nominated by the Taoiseach. She was elected deputy leader of the Green Party on 14 July 2024.

Two by-elections were held for vacancies in Seanad Éireann on Wednesday, 21 April 2021. The vacancies were caused by the resignations of Fine Gael's Michael W. D'Arcy from the Agricultural Panel in September 2020 to become chief executive of the Irish Association of Institute Management; and of Sinn Féin's Elisha McCallion from the Industrial and Commercial Panel in October 2020 due to a COVID-19 grants controversy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Saoirse McHugh</span> Irish politician

Saoirse McHugh is an Irish environmentalist and former Green Party politician. From Achill Island in County Mayo, she holds degrees in genetics and sustainable agriculture. McHugh was a Green Party candidate in the 2019 European Parliament election in Ireland, the 2020 Irish general election and 2020 Seanad election. She was unsuccessful in each case.
