The Peachtree Creek Greenway trail is a multi-use trail under construction along the North Fork Peachtree Creek in and near Atlanta, Georgia, United States, which will traverse the cities of Atlanta, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville and parts of Unincorporated Dekalb County. Once complete, it will connect 12 miles from the Atlanta Beltline trails and Path 400 northward up to I-285. Some landmarks along the route will include Silverback stadium, Mercer University, CHOA & Emory and multiple schools and libraries. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Groundbreaking was in early 2018. Most of the Greenway will be a 14 foot (4.3 m) wide, lighted concrete path suitable for bikes, wheelchairs, strollers and all modes of non-engine transportation. It will be considered an alternate (non-auto) transportation route. In December 2019, the first "Model Mile" was open to the public in Brookhaven.The path of the Greenway follows alongside the North Fork Peachtree Creek. Significant clean-up of the creek has included the removal of 30 truck loads of trash and over 200 tires in addition to many invasive species of foliage.

History

While the Greenway is expected to increase business revenue along the mostly immigrant Buford Highway corridor (BuHi district) there is concern about the effect of increased property value on affordable housing surrounding the greenway. [5] Controversy has risen in regards to gentrification along the corridor. [6] Anticipation for the Peachtree Creek Greenway has already caused the median gross rent to rise by 22.9%. [7] The City of Brookhaven has been awarded $2.7 million in federal funds towards the project through the Atlanta Regional Commission. [8] In 2017 The City of Brookhaven attempted to take 19 acres of land for the Peachtree Creek Greenway through eminent domain. In March 2018 a Dekalb County Superior Court Judge ruled against Brookhaven, calling it an illegal "bad faith" deal. [9]

The Atlanta BeltLine is a 22 miles (35 km) open and planned loop of multi-use trail and light rail transit system on a former railway corridor around the core of Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta BeltLine is designed to reconnect neighborhoods and communities historically divided and marginalized by infrastructure, improve transportation, add green space, promote redevelopment, create and preserve affordable housing, and showcase arts and culture. The project is in varying stages of development, with several mainline and spur trails complete and others in an unpaved, but hikeable, state. Since the passage of the More MARTA sales tax in 2016, construction of the light rail streetcar system is overseen by MARTA in close partnership with Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.

Peachtree Creek

Peachtree Creek is a major stream in Atlanta. It flows for 7.5 miles (12.1 km) almost due west into the Chattahoochee River just south of Vinings.

Brookhaven, Georgia City in Georgia, United States

Brookhaven/Oglethorpe station MARTA rail station

Brookhaven/Oglethorpe is a train station in Brookhaven, Georgia, on the Gold Line of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) rail system. An elevated station, it is located one mile south of Oglethorpe University. The station provides connecting bus service to North Druid Hills, Toco Hills, North DeKalb Mall, the Peachtree Boulevard business district, and the Georgia Department of Labor.

The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) is a school district headquartered at 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, near Stone Mountain and in the Atlanta metropolitan area. DCSD operates public schools in areas of DeKalb County that are not within the city limits of Atlanta and Decatur. It will serve a portion of Atlanta annexed by that city in 2018 until 2024, when that portion will be re-assigned to Atlanta Public Schools (APS).

Murphey Candler Park Park in Brookhaven, Georgia, United States

Murphey Candler Park is a 135-acre multi-use park located in Brookhaven, Georgia, United States. The park is owned and operated by the City of Brookhaven. Park amenities include multi-use fields, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a playground, picnic areas, a lake, and trails. Youth sports are offered through baseball, softball, and football programs that operate through the park. The lake at Murphey Candler Park offers fishing, and it is home to largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and channel catfish. The lake is also home to Canada Geese, Mallards, other ducks and beavers.

Goodwin House (Brookhaven, Georgia)

The Solomon Goodwin House was located at 3931 Peachtree Road in Brookhaven, Georgia, 0.5 miles (0.80 km) east of Atlanta city limits. Dating back to 1831, it was the oldest building still standing in DeKalb County, Georgia and the oldest building "Inside the Perimeter". The home once headed up a 600-acre (240 ha) farm.

The PATH400 Greenway Trail is a multi-use trail under construction along the Georgia 400 freeway in Buckhead, Atlanta. Once complete, the trail will be 10 feet to 14 feet wide and traverse the cities of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody.

Western Gwinnett Bikeway

The Western Gwinnett Bikeway is a multi-use trail under construction along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Gwinnett County. The trail will be 10 feet to 14 feet wide and traverse the cities of Norcross, Peachtree Corners, Berkeley Lake, Duluth, Suwanee, Sugar Hill and Buford. It is intended to be the spine of West Gwinnett’s trails and greenways, connecting parks, trails, businesses, schools and neighborhoods to the urban core.
