He is a former president of the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society,a former vice president of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction, and a former president of the Association of Mathematics Educators of Singapore. [2]
In mathematics,Lee's work is in analysis focusing on integration theory.
Lee received his PhD from Queens University of Belfast (UK) in 1965,under the direction of Ralph Henstock.
Lee has taught at the University of Malawi (1965–67),the University of Auckland (1967–71),Nanyang University (1971–81),the National University of Singapore (1981–94),and the National Institute of Education (NIE) [3] in Nanyang Technological University (1994–2013). [4]
Lee was a president of the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society in 1981 and 1982,and vice president of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) from 1987 to 1990 and from 1991 to 1994. [5] He was President of the Association of Mathematics Educators in Singapore in 2000 and 2001. [6]
In 2012,he became one of the inaugural Fellows of the American Mathematical Society. [7]
Lee worked for more than 40 years to promote the development of mathematics and mathematics education in Southeast Asia and in China. He trained a significant number of mathematicians from these regions, including those from Singapore,Indonesia and the Philippines. [8] Lee has published about 100 research papers and written several books on analysis and mathematics education.
Lee contributed to the development of Singapore math,a teaching method and mathematics curriculum that focus on problem solving and heuristic model drawing, which originated in Singapore in the 1980s.
The International Mathematical Union (IMU) is an international non-governmental organization devoted to international cooperation in the field of mathematics across the world. It is a member of the International Science Council (ISC) and supports the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM). Its members are national mathematics organizations from more than 80 countries.
The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a national research university in Singapore. Founded in 1981, it is the second-oldest autonomous university in the country.
National Taiwan Normal University, or Shīdà師大 is an institution of higher education and normal school operating out of three campuses in Taipei, Taiwan. NTNU is the leading research institute in such disciplines as Education, Linguistics, Fine Arts, Music and Sports in Taiwan. NTNU is one of the four oldest universities in Taiwan. Founded in 1922 during the Japanese regime, it was first known as Taihoku High School under the Government-General of Taiwan before being renamed as Taiwan Provincial Teachers College in 1946, and subsequently restructured as a comprehensive university in 1994.
Nanyang University (Chinese: 南洋大学; pinyin: Nányáng Dàxué, also known as Nantah, was a university in Singapore between 1956 and 1980. During its existence, it was Singapore's only private university in the Chinese language. In 1980, Nanyang University was merged with the University of Singapore to form the National University of Singapore. It was only until 2005 that another private school in Singapore, SIM University, was established.
The Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) is a independent secondary educational institution in Bukit Timah, Central Region, Singapore. It was established in 2005 by the merger of The Chinese High School (1919–2004) and Hwa Chong Junior College (1974–2005).
Nanyang Girls' High School (NYGH) is an independent girls' secondary school in Bukit Timah, Singapore. Founded in 1917, it is one of the oldest schools in the country. NYGH offers a six-year Integrated Programme, which allows students to skip the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level examinations and proceed to take the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level examinations at the end of Year 6. Students would study in NYGH from Years 1 through 4, before proceeding to the College section of Hwa Chong Institution in Years 5 and 6.
Chinese Singaporeans are Singaporeans of Han Chinese descent. Chinese Singaporeans constitute 75.9% of the Singaporean citizen population according to the official census, making them the largest ethnic group in Singapore.
Ralph Henstock was an English mathematician and author. As an Integration theorist, he is notable for Henstock–Kurzweil integral. Henstock brought the theory to a highly developed stage without ever having encountered Jaroslav Kurzweil's 1957 paper on the subject.
Founded in 1920, The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is a professional organization for schoolteachers of mathematics in the United States. One of its goals is to improve the standards of mathematics in education. NCTM holds annual national and regional conferences for teachers and publishes five journals.

Singapore math is a teaching method based on the national mathematics curriculum used for first through sixth grade in Singaporean schools. The term was coined in the United States to describe an approach originally developed in Singapore to teach students to learn and master fewer mathematical concepts at greater detail as well as having them learn these concepts using a three-step learning process: concrete, pictorial, and abstract. In the concrete step, students engage in hands-on learning experiences using physical objects which can be everyday items such as paper clips, toy blocks or math manipulates such as counting bears, link cubes and fraction discs. This is followed by drawing pictorial representations of mathematical concepts. Students then solve mathematical problems in an abstract way by using numbers and symbols.
Statistics education is the practice of teaching and learning of statistics, along with the associated scholarly research.
The Nanyang style of painting, also known as Nanyang art or the Nanyang school, was a modern art movement and painting tradition initially practised by migrant Chinese painters in Singapore from the late-1940s to 1960s. As immigrant artists taken by the novelty of tropical landscapes, the Nanyang artists' works characteristically depicted Southeast Asian subject matter such as tropical fruit, kampung scenes, and batik fabric while drawing upon a synthesis of Western watercolor and oil painting techniques with Chinese ink traditions.
