Pengiran Anak Idris (born January 1948) [1] is a Bruneian nobleman and member of the royal family who became the prince consort to Princess Amal Umi Kalthum Al-Islam in 1972, [2] the daughter of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III. He is the current Chief (Yang Di-Pertua) of Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara , [3] [4] a member of the Privy Council of Brunei, [5] and assistant chairman of Adat Istiadat Council (Majlis Mesyuarat Adat Istiadat), [6] [7] and Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah's board of governors. Biography

On 31 March 2008, at the surau of Istana Nurul Iman, Pengiran Anak Idris led the prayers of gratitude for the Istiadat Bersiram of Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim on the occasion of Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah's birth. [10]

Since 9 April 2021, Pengiran Anak Idris has become the Chief of the Royal Customs and Protocols Department. [3] He carried out duties at royal and national events, such as the wedding of Prince Abdul Mateen and Anisha Rosnah in 2024, [11] Princess Azemah and Prince Bahar in 2023 [12] and Tahlil ceremonies. [13] His spouse goes with him to a number of functions and ceremonies. [14] By order of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Yang Di-Pertua Adat Istiadat Negara, which is presently held by Pengiran Anak Idris, will become a ministerial-level position starting on 6 May 2024. [15]

Personal life

Pengiran Idris is born in January 1948, to Pengiran Maharaja Lela Pengiran Muda Abdul Kahar bin Pengiran Bendahara Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Yassin (died 16 April 1957). [16] Additionally, he is also the nephew of Pengiran Anak Kemaluddin [16] and cousin to Dayangku Najibah Eradah. [17] The President of the Women Graduates' Association (PSW), Pengiran Datin Paduka Hajah Hairani, is his sister. [18]

Pengiran Anak Idris married Princess Amal Umi Kalthum Al-Islam on 16 December 1972, followed by a complete compliance to the ceremonial customs of royal marriages in Brunei. [2] Earlier on 11 December, one of the marriage ceremony was held at Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. [19] This made him the brother-in-law of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Pengiran Anak Mohamed Alam was a nobleman, magistrate, and politician who served as the fourth Speaker of the Legislative Council from 1971 to 1974, and as the Chief of Adat Istiadat Negara from 1954 to 1981. A member of the Bruneian royal family, he was the father of Pengiran Anak Saleha, the queen consort of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. He was also the maternal grandfather of Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince of Brunei.

Pengiran Muda Hashim was a Bruneian nobleman and politician who held several significant positions, including membership in the Privy Council, Legislative Council, and the Brunei Islamic Religious Council. As a member of the Bruneian royal family, he was the husband to Pengiran Anak Puteri (Princess) Besar, the daughter of Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam II. He was named Wazir in 1952 and served on the executive committee for the coronation ceremony of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, acting as Sultan during the late Sultan's foreign tours.

Pengiran Anak Mohammad Yusof was a Bruneian civil servant and member of the royal family, having been Queen Saleha's brother and the spouse of Princess Nor'ain in 1967. He had previously served as the Chief of Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara, and was a member of several state councils.

<i>Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara</i> Department in charge of customs and ceremonies of Brunei

The Jabatan Adat Istiadat Negara is a government department under the Prime Minister's Office that functions to guarantee the constant maintenance of Royal Customs. It has been translated literally as the Office of State Customs, the Department of the State Customs or the State Department of Customs and Traditions, even though it does not have an English name. In order to guarantee that the practice and implementation, particularly the Istiadat Diraja, are always in accordance with the philosophy of Melayu Islam Beraja, preaching and teaching the public through lectures, briefings, and workshops on Adat Istiadat (Customs) are regularly held.
