Peter A. Ramsey (born December 23, 1962) is an American illustrator, storyboard artist, and filmmaker. He is best known for directing DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians (2012), becoming the first African American to direct a major American animated film, [2] and co-directing Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). For Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, he became the first African American to be nominated for and win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Early life

Ramsey grew up in the Crenshaw District of South Los Angeles, and graduated in 1980 from Palisades High School. He studied painting at University of California, Los Angeles for two years before enrolling in film classes at Los Angeles City College. [3] He was raised Catholic. [4]

Career

His first job in Hollywood was painting a mural, but soon he was working as a storyboard artist and production illustrator on 26 films including Predator 2 , Backdraft , Independence Day , Fight Club and A.I. Artificial Intelligence . He was a second unit director for Poetic Justice , Higher Learning , Tank Girl and Godzilla . Aron Warner, the producer of Tank Girl, suggested he join DreamWorks Animation. [5] After initially being uninterested, Ramsey joined DreamWorks as a story artist for Shrek the Third and Shrek the Halls .

In 2012, he directed Rise of the Guardians , based on William Joyce's The Guardians of Childhood books, making him the first African-American to direct a big-budget animated feature. [1] In 2018, he co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. [6] He is set to write and direct Blood Count, a period vampire thriller distributed by Paramount Pictures, as well as the Robert Johnson movie Love is Vain. [7] [8] On April 16, 2021, he was set to direct the film adaptation of the Matthew Quick novel Boy21. [9]

In April 2022, Ramsey had been hired to direct an episode each of the Star Wars streaming series The Mandalorian season 3, which was released in March 2023, and Ahsoka , which was released in August 2023. [10] [11]

Ramsey is a member of AMPAS, the Directors Guild of America and The Animation Guild. [12]

Triggerfish is a computer animation film studio based in Cape Town, South Africa and Galway, Ireland. The studio is best known for its animated feature films Adventures in Zambezia (2012), Khumba (2013), and Seal Team (2021), as well as the work they have done on television specials created for UK producers Magic Light Pictures. In 2016, Stick Man was awarded the Cristal for best TV production at the Annecy International Animation Festival. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a 2022 American animated adventure comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. Joel Crawford is an American film director and storyboard artist. He is best known for directing the DreamWorks Animation films The Croods: A New Age (2020) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), with the latter nominated him for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

<i>Lost Ollie</i> Television series from Netflix

Lost Ollie is an American live action/animated television miniseries created by Shannon Tindle. The series is based on the 2016 children's book Ollie's Odyssey by William Joyce. It tells the story of a lost toy searching across the countryside for his owner and blends live-action performances with computer-generated animation.

Ahsoka, also known as Star Wars: Ahsoka, is an American space fantasy television series created by Dave Filoni for the streaming service Disney+. It is part of the Star Wars franchise and a spin-off from The Mandalorian, taking place in the same timeframe as that series and its other interconnected spin-offs after the events of the film Return of the Jedi (1983). Ahsoka follows former Jedi apprentice Ahsoka Tano and her allies as they fight the remnants of the Galactic Empire during the time of the fledgling New Republic.

Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire is an Afrofuturist and Africanfuturist animated anthology short film series produced by Triggerfish. It premiered on July 5, 2023, on Disney+. It received generally positive reviews from critics.
