Peter A. Ramsey (born December 23, 1962) is an American illustrator, storyboard artist, and filmmaker. He is best known for directing DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians (2012), becoming the first African American to direct a major American animated film, [2] and co-directing Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). For Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, he became the first African American to be nominated for and win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Early life

Ramsey grew up in the Crenshaw District of South Los Angeles, and graduated in 1980 from Palisades High School. He studied painting at University of California, Los Angeles for two years before enrolling in film classes at Los Angeles City College. [3] He was raised Catholic. [4]

Career

His first job in Hollywood was painting a mural, but soon he was working as a storyboard artist and production illustrator on 26 films including Predator 2 , Backdraft , Independence Day , Fight Club and A.I. Artificial Intelligence . He was a second unit director for Poetic Justice , Higher Learning , Tank Girl and Godzilla . Aron Warner, the producer of Tank Girl, suggested he join DreamWorks Animation. [5] After initially being uninterested, Ramsey joined DreamWorks as a story artist for Shrek the Third and Shrek the Halls .

In 2012, he directed Rise of the Guardians , based on William Joyce's The Guardians of Childhood books, making him the first African-American to direct a big-budget animated feature. [1] In 2018, he co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. [6] He is set to write and direct Blood Count, a period vampire thriller distributed by Paramount Pictures, as well as the Robert Johnson movie Love is Vain. [7] [8] On April 16, 2021, he was set to direct the film adaptation of the Matthew Quick novel Boy21. [9]

In April 2022, Ramsey had been hired to direct an episode each of the Star Wars streaming series The Mandalorian season 3, which was released in March 2023, and Ahsoka , which was released in August 2023. [10] [11]

Ramsey is a member of AMPAS, the Directors Guild of America and The Animation Guild. [12]

Daniel Pemberton is an English composer and songwriter. Primarily working in film, television, and video games, he is best known for composing the scores for the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the latter of which earned him a number of award nominations, including at the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards. He has also received recognition for his work in films such as Steve Jobs, Motherless Brooklyn, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Being the Ricardos, and The Rescue, as well as the LittleBigPlanet series of games.

Philip Anderson Lord and Christopher Robert Miller are American filmmakers. They are the creators and co-stars of the adult animated sitcom Clone High, and the writers and directors of the animated films Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) and The Lego Movie (2014), as well as the directors of the live-action comedy film 21 Jump Street (2012) and its sequel, 22 Jump Street (2014). Lord and Miller are best known for working on the Spider-Verse franchise, which won them the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). The Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Directing in a Feature Production is an Annie Award, awarded annually to the best animated feature film and introduced in 1996. It rewards directing for animated feature films. The recipients are directors as well as co-directors.

Triggerfish is a computer animation film studio based in Cape Town, South Africa and Galway, Ireland. The studio is best known for its animated feature films Adventures in Zambezia (2012), Khumba (2013), and Seal Team (2021), as well as the work they have done on television specials created for UK producers Magic Light Pictures. In 2016, Stick Man was awarded the Cristal for best TV production at the Annecy International Animation Festival. Ahsoka, also known as Star Wars: Ahsoka, is an American television series created and written by Dave Filoni for Disney+. It is part of the Star Wars franchise and a spin-off from the series The Mandalorian (2019–present), taking place in the same timeframe as that series and its other interconnected spin-offs after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983), while also serving as a continuation to the animated series Star Wars Rebels (2014–2018). The series follows Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to the galaxy following the fall of the Empire.

The Annie Award for Directing in an Animated Television/Broadcast Production is an Annie Award given annually to the best animated direction in animated television or broadcast productions. Directing for television productions was first recognized at the 24th Annie Awards alongside feature film in the Best Achievement in Directing, though the next year a separate category would be created resulting in two directing categories, one for television/broadcasting productions and another for animated feature films.
