The 400 metres hurdles is a track and field hurdling event. The event has been on the Olympic athletics programme since 1900 for men and since 1984 for women.

Liu Xiang is a Chinese former 110 meter hurdler. Liu is an Olympic Gold medalist and World Champion. His 2004 Olympic gold medal was the first in a men's track and field event for China.

Andrew Steven Turner is an English bodybuilder and retired track and field athlete who specialised in the 110 metres hurdles and occasionally competed in the 100 and 200 metres sprints as well as long jump. At the 110 m hurdles, he is the 2011 World Championship bronze medallist, the 2010 European Champion and the 2010 Commonwealth Champion. Also in 2010, he broke the automatically timed world record in the 200 metres hurdles. He was coached by Lloyd Cowan.

William "Will" Sharman is a British athlete who specialises in the 110 metres hurdles. He started his career as a junior high jumper and decathlete, but focused entirely on hurdling after a shoulder injury. He made his international debut for Great Britain at the 2006 European Athletics Championships and went on to compete at the 2007 Summer Universiade. Sharman came to prominence in 2009, after he significantly improved upon his previous personal best and finished fourth in the 110 metres hurdles final at the 2009 World Championships. This would be the first of three consecutive appearances in the World Championship final, he's since finished fifth in both the 2011 and 2013 finals.
Ryan Wilson is an American track and field athlete who specializes in the 110 meters hurdles. He is a previous national champion after winning at the 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and the current national silver medal holder at the 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He was the 2003 NCAA champion in the event and won four hurdles titles in the Pacific-10 Conference. He was the bronze medalist at the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final and was the runner-up at the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. His personal best time of 13.02 seconds, set in 2007 at the Reebok Grand Prix, ranks him within the top twenty fastest of all time in the event.
Monique Éwanjé-Épée Lewin is a retired French track and field athlete who competed in the 60m hurdles and 100m hurdles, and is the co-holder of the French national records for both events. She is the 1990 European Champion and the 1991 World Indoor silver medallist. She also represented France at the Olympic Games in 1988, 1992 and 1996.
Takatoshi Abe is a Japanese track and field athlete who competes in the 400 metres hurdles. He is the reigning Asian champion in the event.
Warren Weir is a retired Jamaican sprinter, who specialized in the 200 metres. He was the bronze medallist in the event at the 2012 London Olympics, helping Jamaica sweep the medals. In 2013 at the Moscow World Championships, Warren Weir won the silver medal equalling his personal best. He finished behind Usain Bolt who set a World Leading time. His personal best is 19.79 seconds set at the National Stadium in his home country Kingston, Jamaica. He has since equalled his personal best in Moscow, in the World Championship final. He trained with the Glen Mills-coached Racers Track Club, alongside Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.
Milan Trajković is a Serbian-born Cypriot athlete specialising in the sprint hurdles. He has won two gold medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe.
Nicholas Kiplagat Bett was a Kenyan track and field athlete who competed in the 400 metres hurdles. His personal best for the event is 47.79 seconds. He was a world champion in the event, having won in 2015, and a two-time bronze medallist at the African Championships in Athletics. He died in a road accident in Kenya at the age of 28.
Nur Herman Majid is a retired Malaysian who specialised in the sprint hurdles. He represented his country at the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as two indoor and one outdoor World Championships. In addition he won multiple medals on regional level.
Ned Justeen Azemia is a Seychellois hurdler who specialises in the 400 metres hurdles. He is the current Seychellois record holder in the event. Azemia competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in the 400 metres hurdles. He has also competed in two World Junior Championships, an African athletics championships and an African Youth Games. Azemia has also raced over the flat 400 metres distance.
Gianni Tozzi is an Italian former athlete who competed in the sprint hurdles. He won the silver medal at the 1987 Mediterranean Games. In addition, he represented his country at the 1987 World Championships without advancing from the first round.
Eric Kaiser is a retired Cameroonian-born German athlete who specialised in the sprint hurdles. He represented his country at the 1996 Summer Olympics as well as two World Championships. Earlier in his career he competed in the decathlon.
David King is an English Olympic athlete specialising in the high hurdles. He is a three times British champion over 110m hurdles and three times British champion over 60m hurdles. He represented Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and made the semi-finals, finishing 19th overall. At the 2023 British Indoor Athletics Championships he took the title of 2023 UK national champion over 60m indoor hurdles. He then reached the finals of the 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Istanbul where he finished 7th. He is currently based in Phoenix, Arizona, and trains with Phoenix Track Club under Coach Tim O'Neil.
Abderrahman Almoubarrake Samba Alsaleck is a Qatari male track and field athlete who specialises in the 400 metres hurdles. He was born and grew up in Saudi Arabia but chose to represent Mauritania – his father's homeland – before eventually switching allegiance to Qatar and moving to Doha in 2015. He became eligible to compete for his adopted country in May 2016. He was the second person to run the 400m hurdle event in less than 47 seconds.
Philippe Aubert is a retired French athlete who specialised in the sprint hurdles. He is best known for winning the gold medal in the 110 metres hurdles at the inaugural 1989 Jeux de la Francophonie in Casablanca. In addition, he represented his country at four European Indoor Championships.
