The Preakness Stakes is an American thoroughbred horse race held on the third Saturday in May each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a Grade I race run over a distance of 9.5 furlongs on dirt. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies 121 pounds (55 kg). It is the second jewel of the Triple Crown, held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes.

Pimlico is an area of Central London in the City of Westminster, built as a southern extension to neighbouring Belgravia. It is known for its garden squares and Regency architecture. It is demarcated to the north by Victoria Station, and bounded by the River Thames to the south, Vauxhall Bridge Road to the east and the former Grosvenor Canal to the west. At its heart is a grid of residential streets laid down by the planner Thomas Cubitt, beginning in 1825 and now protected as the Pimlico Conservation Area. Passport to Pimlico is a 1949 British comedy film made by Ealing Studios and starring Stanley Holloway, Margaret Rutherford and Hermione Baddeley. It was directed by Henry Cornelius and written by T. E. B. Clarke. The story concerns the unearthing of treasure and documents that lead to a small part of Pimlico to be declared a legal part of the House of Burgundy, and therefore exempt from the post-war rationing or other bureaucratic restrictions active in Britain at the time.

Pimlico Race Course is a thoroughbred horse racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes. Its name is derived from the 1660s when English settlers named the area where the facility currently stands in honor of Olde Ben Pimlico's Tavern in London. The racetrack is nicknamed "Old Hilltop" after a small rise in the infield that became a favorite gathering place for thoroughbred trainers and race enthusiasts. It is currently owned by the Stronach Group.

2017 Preakness Stakes

The 2017 Preakness Stakes was the 142nd running of the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the American Triple Crown. It is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds at a distance of 1 316 miles (1.9 km) and was held on May 20, 2017, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The race went off at 6:51 pm ET and was broadcast by NBC. The race was won by Cloud Computing, upsetting Always Dreaming's chances of a Triple Crown. Classic Empire was second, and Senior Investment finished third. The Maryland Jockey Club reported a track record total attendance of 140,327, the second highest attendance for American thoroughbred racing events in North America during 2017.

The 1919 Preakness Stakes was the 44th running of the $50,000 added Preakness Stakes, a horse race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds. The event took place on May 14, 1919 and was run four days after the Kentucky Derby. Ridden by Johnny Loftus, the Derby winner Sir Barton easily won the mile and an eighth race by four lengths over runner-up Eternal. The race was run on a track rated fast in a final time of 1:53 flat.
