Pizzo Straciugo is a mountain of the Pennine Alps, located on the border between Switzerland and Italy. It lies east of the Portjengrat, on the range between the Val Divedro (Valais) and Domodossola (Piedmont).
Torricella del Pizzo is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Cremona in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast of Milan and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) southeast of Cremona. To let someone whet their beak is to pay protection money. The practice is widespread in Southern Italy, not only by the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, but also by the 'Ndrangheta in Calabria and the Camorra in Campania.

The dessert takes the form of a ball that is composed of two or more flavors of gelato, often with melted chocolate inserted into the center or alternatively, with either fruit syrup or frozen fruit — typically raspberry, strawberry, or cherry — in the center. Typically, the desert is covered in a shell made of chocolate or cocoa, but sometimes cinnamon or nuts are used.
