Placer County is divided into three sections, High Country, Gold Country and the Valley. Valley is considered to be the western slope of the county reaching from Roseville to Loomis and is referred to as Placer Valley.
East of Placer Valley is Gold County which leads to the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe.
Placer Valley is northeast of Sacramento County. Interstate 80 and Highway 65 are the major highways that pass though Placer Valley.

Placer Tourism, Inc., doing business as Placer Valley Tourism (PVT), is a Business Improvement District (BID), formed in 2004 by the City of Roseville under provisions in the California Streets and Highways Code Section 36500-36504, which is known as the "Property and Business Improvement District Law of 1994". The organization is classified for tax purposes as a 501(c)6.
The geographic footprint of PVT consists of the three cities of Roseville, Rocklin, and Lincoln, California. PVT exists to market the three-city region as a tourism destination in order to generate incremental room nights in hotels in the cities. PVT is a non-profit organization that markets Placer Valley as a sports facility destination. [6] Placer Valley's most popular sports facilities are the Roebbelen Center located @the Grounds, Roseville Aquatics Complex, Maidu Sports Complex, and Hardwood Palace.

Rocklin is a city in Placer County, California, located approximately 22 miles (35 km) from Sacramento, California, and about 6.1 miles (9.8 km) northeast of Roseville in the Sacramento metropolitan area. Dry Creek is a 15-mile (24 km) long stream in Placer County, California, tributary to the Sacramento River via Steelhead Creek. Its watershed lies within the Sacramento Valley. Whitney High School is a public school located in the southern Placer County city of Rocklin, California, a settlement in the northern Sacramento metropolitan area. The council serves a large section of Northern California, primarily the Sacramento Valley and the northern Sierra Nevada. Its boundaries range north to south from Redding to Elk Grove and west to east from Vacaville to Pollock Pines and include 16 Northern California Counties. Its council headquarters and service center is located in Sacramento. The council also operates Scout Shops selling BSA merchandise are located in both Sacramento and Chico.
Secret Ravine is a perennial tributary of Miners Ravine which shortly thereafter runs into Dry Creek in Placer County, California. Its course lies within the cities of Rocklin, Loomis, and Roseville, as well as unincorporated parts of Placer County. It passes through the campus of Sierra College. Over its entire length the creek runs near the Interstate 80 freeway. It is an area becoming increasingly suburbanized. It was the site of placer mining operations during the California Gold Rush, and areas of tailings remain to this day. Later the drainage was a locale for granite quarrying.

Placer County Transit is the operator of mass transportation for western Placer County, California, excluding the city of Roseville, which has its own public transit system. In addition to six local routes, Placer County Transit also operates the Lincoln School Tripper in Lincoln, California, a bus supplement during school days, and the Placer Commuter Express, a commuter bus service between Downtown Sacramento and the Colfax Amtrak station. Thunder Valley Casino Resort is a hotel and casino located in unincorporated Placer County in Whitney, California near the city of Lincoln, California, 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Sacramento. It is owned and operated by the United Auburn Indian Community and designed by architect Edward Vance of JMA Architecture Studios, located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The resort opened on June 9, 2003. It was operated by Station Casinos from 2003 to 2010.
The Sac-Joaquin Section (SJS) is the governing body of public and private high school athletics in parts of Northern San Joaquin Valley, California. Its geographic area also covers the California portion of the Lake Tahoe region; however, three schools in that area—North Tahoe, Truckee, and South Tahoe High Schools—are instead members of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association due to their relative isolation from other California schools and their proximity to more populated areas in Nevada, especially in the Reno area. It is one of ten sections that compose the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). The SJS is split into seven divisions, each comprising several leagues.
