Political Secretary (Malaysia)

Political Secretary is a constitutional office in Malaysia. As a member of the Federal Government, a Political Secretary is appointed by the Prime Minister [1] either on his own choice or on the advice of a Minister.

Duties and responsibilities

There has been no clear description of duties and responsibilities of a Political Secretary. In general, however, a Political Secretary is tasked to assist political duties of a Minister and provide the latter with appropriate advice on political situations in such constituency, such state or Malaysia at large. Chief Political Secretary to the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Abdullah Saidol explained that a Political Secretary is expected to heed, support and inform to the people, development policies and programmes planned by the Government. [2]

Political secretaries to the Anwar Ibrahim cabinet

As of 27 January 2023, the following individuals have been appointed as political secretaries to the Anwar Ibrahim cabinet. They have served since December 2022. Presently, there have been 36 political secretaries serving the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Ministers and Ministers. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Political secretaries to the Ismail Sabri cabinet

The following individuals were appointed as political secretaries to the Ismail Sabri cabinet. [8] They served from September or November 2021 to the dissolution of the cabinet in November 2022. There were 32 political secretaries serving the Prime Minister, Senior Ministers and Ministers. [9]

State level

State governments have appointed Political Secretaries as well. Appointment of state political secretaries, however, determined by the state through enactments and decisions of state executive council or cabinet. Roles and responsibilities of a state political secretary is similar to those of a federal political secretary.

Peninsular Malaysia

In states of Peninsular Malaysia, a Political Secretary is appointed by the head of respective State Government and serves political affairs of the latter only.

Sabah

In Sabah, each Minister is provided with a Political Secretary appointed by the Chief Minister on the advice of such Minister. Only Chief Minister can appoint up to four Political Secretaries for himself.

Sarawak

Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg has 32 political secretaries all over Sarawak. [2]

The Prime Minister's Department is a federal government ministry in Malaysia. Its objective is "determining the services of all divisions are implemented according to policy, legislation / regulations and current guidelines". It is headed by the Prime Minister of Malaysia followed by other Minister in the Prime Minister's Department. The Department consists of the Prime Minister's Office, the Deputy Prime Minister's Office and more than 50 other government agencies and entities. Pehin Sri Tan Sri Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem, popularly known as Tok Nan, was a Malaysian politician who served as the fifth chief minister of Sarawak from March 2014 to his death in January 2017. During his tenure, Adenan held the position as the President of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), which is part of the Barisan Nasional coalition. He was of Malay descent.

The Perlis State Executive Council is the executive authority of the Government of Perlis, Malaysia. The Council comprises the Menteri Besar, appointed by the Raja on the basis that he is able to command a majority in the Perlis State Legislative Assembly, a number of members made up of members of the Assembly, the State Secretary, the State Legal Adviser and the State Financial Officer.

Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg, familiarly known as Abang Jo or Abang Johari, is a Malaysian politician who has served as the head of government of Sarawak since January 2017. He has been Member of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Gedong since 2021, having previously being the MLA for Satok from 1981 to 2021. He was also the MLA for Satok between May 1981 and December 2021. He is the son of the first Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak, Abang Openg Abang Sapiee.

Samad bin Jambri is a Malaysian politician who has served as the State Assistant Minister of Rural Development of Sabah in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) state administration under Chief Minister Hajiji Noor and Minister Jahid Jahim since October 2020 as well as Member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Labuk since September 2020. He is a member of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (GAGASAN), a component party of the GRS coalition. He was a formerly member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party of Sabah, a component party of the Perikatan Nasional (PN). He left Sabah BERSATU on 10 December 2022 and joined GAGASAN on 5 February 2023.

The Ismail Sabri cabinet was formed following the appointment of Ismail Sabri Yaakob as Prime Minister of Malaysia on 21 August 2021 and dissolved 15 months and 3 days later following the appointment of Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister on 24 November 2022. It was the 22nd cabinet of Malaysia formed since independence. Following the coalition's defeat in the 2018 general election, Barisan Nasional (BN) has formed its first cabinet.
