Pongok (Indonesian: Pulau Pongok), sometimes known as Liat, is an Indonesian island which is part of the Pongok Islands District of the South Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Province. It comprises over 95% of the district's area and most of its population, with an area of 48.3 square km. It is the 5th largest island in the province, being far smaller than Bangka and Belitung in addition to the islands of Lepar and Mendanau.

Geography

The island is located approximately halfway between Bangka and Belitung, in the middle of the Gaspar Strait, resulting in it sometimes being referred to as "Middle Island".^[2] The island stretches approximately 10 km north-south and 8.5 km east-west. Several small streams flow in the island. The terrain is largely flat with little prominent elevations, the highest point on the island being only 125 m above sea level.^[3] The island is accessible by boat, with a three-hour journey from mainland Bangka.^[4]

Demographics

The island, as Pongok Village, has a population of 5,377 with a sex ratio of 1.14 and divided into 916 households (5.8 persons per household).^[1]

Economy and administration

The island is part of the Pongok Village in the district (Celagen Viullage, on the island of that name, comprises the other part of the district), and is further subdivided into 7 hamlets (dusun). A solar power plant with a peak capacity of 125 kilowatts was established on the island in 2015.^[5]

A stark majority of the labor force are engaged in fisheries and agriculture, with a fish production of about 6,850 tonnes throughout 2016. Several public-funded schools are present on the island, ranging from kindergarten (TK) to senior high school (SMA).^[1]

Puteri Indonesia 2017, the 21st Puteri Indonesia pageant was held on March 31, 2017 at Jakarta Convention Center, Jakarta. Kezia Warouw, Puteri Indonesia 2016 of North Sulawesi crowned her successor Bunga Jelitha of Jakarta Special Capital Region 5 at the end of the event. All 38 contestants from 33 provinces competed for the crown. The winner will represent Indonesia at the Miss Universe 2017, while the runners-up will compete at the Miss International 2017, Miss Supranational 2017, and Miss Grand International 2017. Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere of France and Miss Grand International 2016 Ariska Putri Pertiwi of Indonesia attend at the Grand Final Show. Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova of Canada also attended the show as a judge.

Lepar is an island in Indonesia, located off the southeastern coast of Bangka. Administratively part of South Bangka in Bangka Belitung province, it is the third-largest island in the province after its much larger namesakes Bangka and Belitung, with an area of 169 square km. Lepar sits in the Gaspar Strait which separates the two larger islands. It stretches about 22 km east-west and 17 km north-south, with the towns of Tanjunglabu, Tanjungsangkar and Penutuk being the main population centers. It is governed as its own district of Lepar Pongok, which used to include a nearby, medium-sized island of Pongok until 2012 when it separated as its own district of Pongok Islands.

Mendanau is an island in the Bangka Belitung province of Indonesia. Located about 6 km off the west coast of Belitung and 20 km from the town of Tanjung Pandan, it is the fourth largest island in the province after Bangka, Belitung and Lepar with an area of approximately 113 square kilometers. Administratively it forms - with about 27 satellite islands - the Selat Nasik District of Belitung Regency, and it is home to over 4,000 people mostly spread in 3 settlements.

Celagen is a small island in Bangka-Belitung Province of Indonesia, which consists of one of the two administrative villages of the Pongok Islands District in South Bangka Regency. It is located just around 200 meters west of the larger, more populated island of Pongok and is just separated from the main settlement at Pongok by a small strait. It is located 2 hours from mainland Bangka. With an area of just 354 hectares, it is inhabited by 1,311 people, one-fifth of the district population, living in 358 households.

Putri Indonesia 2018, the 22nd Puteri Indonesia pageant, was held at March 9, 2018 at Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta, Indonesia. Bunga Jelitha, Puteri Indonesia 2017 of Jakarta Special Region 5 crowned her successor, Sonia Fergina Citra from Bangka Belitung, at the end of the event. She defeated 38 other candidates to win the title of Miss Universe Indonesia 2018 and will now represent Indonesia at the Miss Universe 2018.

PS Basel is a football club based in Toboali, Bangka Belitung Islands. They are currently playing at Liga 3 and their homebase is Junjung Besaoh Stadium.

Erzaldi Rosman Djohan is an Indonesian politician who has served as the Governor of Bangka-Belitung Islands since 2017. Prior to becoming governor, he was elected two times as the regent of Central Bangka Regency.
