The Port of Krueng Geukueh, sometimes called the Port of Lhokseumawe, [1] is a seaport in Aceh, Indonesia, located on the Strait of Malacca.
The port, along with the nearby oil and gas terminal in Lhokseumawe proper, was not damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. [2] This was unlike other ports in Aceh which were damaged and restricted operations, and hence shipment of cargo and aid through Aceh flowed through Krueng Geukeuh and the Port of Belawan. [3] [4] After the conclusion of the Aceh conflict, the port became a departure point of many Indonesian Army and Police personnel returning to their home regions. [5] After the tsunami, a 268 meter long pier was constructed by Badan Rehabilitasi dan Rekonstruksi . [6]
It was opened for general public cargo in 2009, but initially did not see much traffic outside of specialized cargo such as LNG and chemicals from the Arun Lhokseumawe Special Economic Zone which mostly utilized their own piers. Local cargo preferred to ship through Belawan, due to lower costs. [7] The port was granted permission to be used as an entry point for imported goods in 2013. [8] Palm oil began to be shipped from the port in 2019. [9]
In the first half of 2020, the port reported that it handled ~280,000 tonnes of cargo, mostly loose cargo such as palm oil and cement. Container operations, which began in late 2019, was reported at around 1,500 containers in the first half of 2020. [10] The port used to serve passengers, but passenger operations were shuttered in mid-2021 due to a lack of interest. [11]
Outside from the general cargo pier, there is also a special terminal for natural gas and a private terminal owned by fertilizer company Pupuk Iskandar Muda . The port is operated by Pelindo I. [10] The port has a 3-hectare container yard. [12]
Port Klang is a town and the main gateway by sea into Malaysia. Known during colonial times as Port Swettenham but renamed Port Klang in July 1972, it is the largest port in the country. It is located about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) southwest of the town of Klang, and 38 kilometres (24 mi) southwest of Kuala Lumpur.

Sabang is a city in Aceh province, Indonesia consisting of Weh Island and several smaller islands off the northern tip of Sumatra. The administrative centre is located 17 kilometres (11 mi) north of Banda Aceh. The city covers an area of 122.13 square kilometres (47.15 sq mi) and had a population of 43,391 in the 2020 census although that total was subsequently adjusted to 41,197; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 43,208. Sabang is known as the northernmost and westernmost city of Indonesia. It also has by far the smallest population of any city in Indonesia.
Tanjungbalai, also colloquially written as Tanjung Balai, is a city in North Sumatra province, Indonesia, on the estuary of the Asahan River. It has an area of 60.52 square kilometers (23.37 sq mi) and the sixth largest kota (urban) population in North Sumatra with 154,445 inhabitants in the 2010 census and 176,027 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 179,748. The town has a ferry terminal with services to Port Klang, Malaysia, and the city-island of Singapore.
Lhokseumawe, is the second largest city in Aceh province, Indonesia. The city covers an area of 181.06 square kilometres, and had a population of 171,163 at the 2010 census and 188,713 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2021 was 189,941. The city is a key regional centre important for the economy of Aceh.
North Aceh Regency is a regency in Aceh Province - which was formerly called the Aceh special territory in 1959–2001), and then Nanggroë Aceh Darussalam in 2001–2009), before reverting to Aceh Province in 2009. It is located on the island of Sumatra. The regency covers an area of 3,236.86 square kilometres and had a population of 534,085 at the 2010 census and 602,793 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 614,600. The administrative centre is now at Lhoksukon; this followed the separation in 2001 of the former capital of Lhokseumawe, which was cut out of the regency by Law No. 2 of 2001 on 21 June 2001 to form an independent city.
Tanjungpandan, also colloquially written as Tanjung Pandan, is the largest town on the island of Belitung in the Indonesian province of Bangka Belitung Islands, Indonesia. Tanjungpandan is the capital of the Belitung Regency comprising one of the five districts (kecamatan) within that Regency. It covers an area of 378.45 km2 and had a population of 86,487 at the 2010 Census and 103,062 at the 2020 Census.
Port of Tanjung Priok is the busiest and most advanced Indonesian seaport, handling more than 50% of Indonesia's trans-shipment cargo traffic. The port is located at Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, which is operated by Indonesian state owned PT Pelindo. The port loaded and unloaded 6.2 million, 6.92 million, and 7.8 million TEUs of cargo during 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively, out of a total capacity of about 8 million TEUs. The container port ranked as 22nd busiest in the world by Lloyd's One Hundred Ports 2019.
Trans-Sumatra Toll Road is an under-construction tolled expressway stretching across Sumatra Island in Indonesia from the northern tip of Banda Aceh to the southern tip of Bakauheni. This toll road was originally planned to connect to the established toll road system of Java through the now cancelled Sunda Strait Bridge. The toll road is to include supporting corridors connecting the cities of Padang, Bengkulu, and Sibolga on the western coast of the island to the main corridors stretching across the more populated eastern coast. State construction company Hutama Karya has been given a government-granted monopoly to operate the network.
Port of Tanjung Perak is the second busiest sea port in Indonesia, located at Surabaya, East Java. It is the main port for the eastern part of the island of Java. The port is accessed from the North through the Madura Strait, a 25-mile (40-kilometer) long, 100-meter (110-yard) wide, and 9.5-meter (31-foot) deep channel between East Java and Madura Island. Because of its strategic position and the existence of surrounding advantageous hinterlands, the port constitutes the center of inter island shipping for Eastern Indonesia. Port of Tanjung Emas is a seaport in Semarang, Indonesia. It is the seaport in Semarang, which is located about 5 km from Tugu Muda of the city center. It was constructed in the nineteenth century by the Dutch colonial government, for use in exporting sugar and various agricultural products coming from the hinterlands in Central Java, replacing a heavily silted, pre-colonial port. The port has been operated by Pelindo since 1985.
Port of Makassar, also known as Port of Soekarno-Hatta, is a seaport in Makassar, Indonesia. It has the highest passenger traffic among Indonesian ports and the largest cargo traffic in Sulawesi. It is considered a primary port by the Indonesian Government, along with the Port of Tanjung Priok (Jakarta), Port of Tanjung Perak (Surabaya), and Port of Belawan (Medan).
Patimban Deep Sea Port is an sea port at Subang, West Java, Indonesia. It is located about 70 kilometers from the Karawang Industrial Estate and 145 kilometers from the city center of capital Jakarta, where many Japanese industrial firms, particularly automotive manufacturers operate. The port comprises a total area of 654 hectares in which 300 hectares will be specialized for intermodal containers and vehicle terminals while the remaining 354 hectares will be used as a back-up area. The port development is expected to be fully completed by 2027. The port operation was officially inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on 20 December 2020.
Port of Kuala Tanjung is a sea port at Batubara Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Once fully functional the port can accommodate 60 million TEUs per year as the biggest port in West Indonesia, bigger than Port of Tanjung Priok in Jakarta. The first phase of development of Kuala Tanjung Multipurpose Terminal was inaugurated in 2018. The first ship to dock at the port was the cruise ship SuperStar Libra on 5 April 2018 from Port Klang, Malaysia. The port made its debut in the global container market, with its first shipment on 28 March, 2020.
Malikussaleh University is an Indonesian public university in North Aceh Regency. Founded in 1969 as a Sharia academy, it branched into multiple subjects, which were integrated into the modern university in 1989. It was nationalized in 2001.
Teuku Umar University is an Indonesian public university in Meulaboh, West Aceh Regency. Starting from a foundation in 1984, it became a university in 2006 and was nationalized to form the current public university in 2014.
Port of Sorong is a seaport in western New Guinea. This port contains both passenger and container terminal linking the Bird's Head Peninsula with other regions of Indonesia. This port is located at Sudirman Road, Sorong District, in Sorong and operated by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia IV.
The Cut Meutia is a passenger train service currently operating in North Aceh Regency, Aceh, Indonesia. It was opened in 2016 and currently serves just three railway stations in the regency, with plans for extension to three other stations. It is the only operational train service in Aceh.
