Power and Water Corporation, trading as PowerWater, is a corporation in the Northern Territory of Australia owned by the Government of the Northern Territory. It is the Northern Territory's premier provider of electricity, water and sewerage services.
The Power and Water Corporation was formed on 1 July 2002, taking over from the former government utility, Power and Water Authority. Power and Water became the first government-owned corporation in the Northern Territory.
There are three power networks, or electricity grids, in the NT, with each network the Australian Energy Regulator managing investment and efficiency, while PowerWater manages the day-to-day-operations. These networks are: [1]
Power stations owned by PowerWater include the Channel Island Power Station, on Darwin Harbour's Middle Arm, which is the largest power station in the Northern Territory, and the Ron Goodin Power Station at Alice Springs, the second-largest power station.
The Katherine Power Station and the Berrimah Power Station are linked to the Channel Island Power Station.[ clarification needed ] The Darwin–Katherine system links from the Channel Island Power Station to Berrimah and Katherine power stations.
Other power stations in the territory include the McArthur River Power Station, the Tennant Creek Power Station, the Brewer Estate Power Station, and the Yulara Power Station.
The Weddell Power Station was constructed in 2008–2014. [2] The first two generators came on line in 2008–2009. The third generator was due to be completed in 2011–2012 but did not get commissioned until 2014. The power station added 30% capacity to Darwin's power supply. [3]
PowerWater is also responsible for management of sewerage and the major water catchments in the region. Water is mainly stored in the largest dam, The Darwin River Dam which holds up to 90% of Darwin's water supply. For many years, Darwin's principal water supply came from Manton Dam.

The Adelaide–Darwin rail corridor consists of the 2975-kilometre (1849-mile) long 1435 mm standard-gauge main line between the South Australian capital city of Adelaide and the Northern Territory capital of Darwin, and the lines immediately connected to it. Preceded by a number of other shorter railways, a transcontinental line through to Darwin was only fully realised in 2004, when the final link from Alice Springs was opened. Tennant Creek is a town located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is the seventh largest town in the Northern Territory, and is located on the Stuart Highway, just south of the intersection with the western terminus of the Barkly Highway. At the 2021 census, Tennant Creek had a population of 3,080 people, of which 55% (1,707) identified themselves as Indigenous.
Yukon Energy Corporation is a Crown corporation which is the primary producer of electricity in the Canadian territory of Yukon. It also distributes electricity to a small number of locations not served by the privately-owned ATCO Electric Yukon. YEC was established in 1987 to take over the Yukon assets of the Northern Canada Power Commission and is currently organised as a subsidiary of the Yukon Development Corporation. ABC Radio Darwin is an ABC radio station which is located in Darwin, Northern Territory. It is one of the stations in the ABC Local Radio network and broadcasts on 105.7MHz on the FM dial. It is an Australian Government sponsored station and is run through the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service, or NTFRS, is the primary provider of fire and rescue services throughout the 1.35 million square km Northern Territory of Australia. It is made up of 27 fire stations, 16 being staffed by volunteer brigade units, 5 being staffed 24 hours a day by career fire fighters, and the remainder by a mix of career and auxiliary fire fighters.
The electricity sectors of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are integrated and supply 2.5 million customers from a combination of coal, peat, natural gas, wind and hydropower. Territory Generation is a government owned corporation of the Northern Territory (Australia), established on 1 July 2014. It had previously been an operational business unit of Power and Water Corporation. Territory Generation owns and operates eight power stations in the Northern Territory.
Channel Island Power Station is the largest power station in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is positioned on an island in the Middle Arm of Darwin Harbour, supplying electricity to the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System. It is currently owned and operated by Territory Generation. Most of the island surrounding the facility is protected from development as the Channel Island Conservation Reserve.
The Amadeus Gas Pipeline is a bi-directional natural gas pipeline running north–south through the Northern Territory of Australia. Its southern extent is the Amadeus Basin gas fields west of Alice Springs. The Amadeus pipeline is owned and operated by APA Group, and regulated by the Australian Energy Regulator.
The Aniwhenua power station is a hydroelectric power facility in Bay of Plenty in New Zealand located on the Rangitaiki River upstream of the Matahina Power Station. Water is drawn from behind a dam above the Aniwhenua Falls and diverted through a canal and a headpond to the power station before being discharged back into the river. The power station is named after the falls which are adjacent to the power station.
Manton Dam is a small concrete arch dam on the Manton River, approximately 70 km (43 mi) south of Darwin, Northern Territory in Australia. The dam was originally constructed by the Department of Defence during the Second World War to provide a reliable supply of fresh water to Darwin, completed in 1942. The reservoir itself is now mostly used for recreation, such as fishing, boating and water skiing, surrounded by a conservation area for native flora and fauna.
Weddell Power Station is a 129 MW natural gas-fired power station in the Northern Territory, located at Wickham, south-east of the Territory capital Darwin. Owned and operated by Territory Generation, it is the second largest power station in the Territory and supplies the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System.
Stokes Hill Power Station was an oil-fired thermal power station in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. During its operating life, it was the largest power station in the Northern Territory, although it was considered unreliable and highly inefficient. Stokes Hill's high operating costs required government to heavily subsidise power bills for Darwin residents, who frequently experienced supply disruptions.
Katherine Power Station is a natural gas-fired power station in the Northern Territory of Australia located at Cossack near the town of Katherine. The power station is owned and operated by Territory Generation and supplies the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System. The dual-fuel station can also independently provide power to Katherine in the event of disruptions across the regional grid, such as when gas supply was interrupted to Channel Island Power Station near Darwin during 2014. The generators in Katherine were able to use a back up supply of diesel fuel to minimise blackouts in the town.
