Predator: 1718 is a one-shot comic book published by Dark Horse Comics, serving as a prequel to the 1990 film Predator 2 . The story revolves around pirate captain Raphael Adolini as while dealing with a mutiny from his crew in 1718, he teams up with a Yautja against them. [1] Published in the special anniversary anthology series A Decade of Dark Horse #1 in July 1996, the storyline was written by Henry Gilroy and drawn by Igor Kordey. Bennett Taylor would then portray Raphael Adolini in the 2022 film Prey .
In 1718, Captain Raphael Adolini arrives at a remote island to learn his crew had stolen sacred items from a church, as well as killing a priest. Disturbed by their actions, Adolini insists the stolen items be returned for the sake of their souls, leading his crew to mutiny against him. After killing some of his rebelling crew, he retreats into the jungle of the island with the treasure, pursued by his crew, who come across a watching Yautja. On finding each other each being attacked by Adolini's crew, the human and Yautja join forces against the humans, Adolini wielding his trusty sword and flintlock pistol, and the Yautja wielding his own weaponry. After the battle is done, Adolini is seemingly mortally wounded, and offers the Yautja his pistol before the Yautja returns to the stars. [2] [3]
In the 2022 film Prey , Raphael Adolini is portrayed by Bennett Taylor, depicted as an Italian translator hired by the French. [8] In August 2022, Taylor revealed that he had based his performance in the film off of reading Predator: 1718, with the film's director Dan Trachtenberg having permitted him to rewrite his lines to be based on Adolini's pirate captain past in the storyline, Taylor imagining him to have survived the events of the 1718-set Predator: 1718 up to the events of the 1719-set Prey, having been seeking out the Yautja who saved his life before being hired by the French. [9] [10] Taylor subsequently expressed interest in reprising his role as Adolini in a potential Prey prequel serving as a loose direct adaptation of Predator: 1718. [11]
