Early life

Desai was born in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England to Hemlata (née Niak) and Jitendra, who have a pyrotechnics company. [1] Both of her parents are of Gujarati descent; her father is from Kenya and her mother is from Uganda. Her younger sibling Anjlee Desai, is a singer and songwriter.

Desai attended St Augustine's RC Primary School in Coulby Newham, then to Nunthorpe Secondary school in Nunthorpe, and Middlesbrough College.

Career

Miss Great Britain (Title Annulled)

Desai entered the Miss Great Britain pageant as Miss Cleveland in 2006, where she initially placed fifth. [2] In November 2006, the original winner, Danielle Lloyd, was stripped of her title due to allegations of her involvement with one of the judges and her agreement to pose for Playboy magazine. [3] A poll of readers of The Sun newspaper selected Desai as Lloyd’s replacement. [4] [5] [6] This made Desai the first woman of Indian heritage to hold the Miss Great Britain title, albeit for only six months. [7] [8] However, in 2010, the pageant organizer Liz Fuller reversed this decision, reinstating Danielle Lloyd as the rightful winner and thereby annulling Desai's title. [9]

According to The Northern Echo, Anjlee Desai, the younger sister of Preeti Desai, attempted to follow in her sister's footsteps but did not succeed in winning the Miss Great Britain 2007 title. [10]

Modelling

Desai moved to Mumbai, India, with her mother in 2008 to pursue her modelling and acting career. By leveraging industry contacts, Desai secured her first assignment in India: a L'Officiel magazine cover shoot with Shah Rukh Khan, a friend of her father Jitendra. Her second assignment featured her in Vijay Mallya's award-winning international Kingfisher calendar, leading to an invitation to be Kingfisher's ambassador for the Formula 1 world tour in 2008. [11] [12]

In 2009, Desai was announced as the new face of the retail apparel company Provogue. Desai has since graced the covers of Cosmopolitan, Grazia, and L’Officiel together with Abhay Deol, ranked 50 of the Times 50 Most Desirable Women of 2011 [13] , closed the show as a showstopper for designer Anita Dongre at Lakme Fashion Week in 2012, and featured in commercials for LG, Honda, Cadbury, Citibank and Nokia.

Film & Television

Following the advice of Shahrukh Khan, Desai enrolled in Anupam Kher's acting classes for three months. [14] [15] [16] In 2011, she made her film debut as Sharmili, opposite Indian-American actor Sendhil Ramamurthy in the feature film Shor in the City, directed by Raj Nidimoru and D. K. Krishna, and produced by Balaji Telefilms. Desai received a Best Lead Actress nomination for Shor in the City at the South Asian Rising Star Film Awards in 2012, but the award itself went to Humaima Malick.

In 2014, Desai took on a lead role in One by Two , directed by Devika Bhagat and produced by Amit Kapoor. She starred opposite Abhay Deol, her romantic partner at the time [17] [18] , but the film received mixed-to-negative reviews and was considered a commercial failure. [19] [20]

Desai then moved to LA and played the role of Jen Green in the thriller The Bachelor Next Door in 2017. Her other work includes The Work Wife, Saving My Baby, Woman Up,The Stunt Double, The Guardians of Justice.
