Timeline of events

The following are the events that initiated in the rookie draft. [3]

Draft contract

Drafted players must obtain qualifying offers from their respective teams within fifteen (15) calendar days. First-round picks must be offered a minimum three-year contract. Applicants drafted in the second and later rounds require a minimum one-year contract. [3]

Undrafted players signed by teams must receive at least a one-conference contract. [3]

Order

In the first round of the draft pick, a draft lottery is used for the four worst-performing teams of the recent conference, followed by the reversed order of the teams' final rankings within each previous conference for the remaining eight teams. For the second and subsequent rounds, the reversed final rankings of the recent conference was the sole basis of the drafting order, with the last-placed team picking first. [3]

Draft lottery

This system was used on the four worst-performing teams. It is used to prevent teams from deliberately tanking their performances in future conferences, by not automatically awarding the top pick to the lowest-ranked team using the reversed rankings. The probability of the teams' chances of getting the first overall pick are as follows: [3]

Tanking in sports refers to the practice of intentionally fielding non-competitive teams to take advantage of league rules that benefit losing teams. This is a much more common practice in American sports that utilize closed leagues than in open sports leagues in other nations, which typically penalize poor performers using a promotion and relegation system, in which the worst teams after each season are sent to a lower-tiered league and replaced with that league's best teams. Relegation costs teams revenue and makes it more difficult for them to attract top talent, making tanking unfeasible. Tanking teams are usually seeking higher picks in the next draft, since league rules generally give the highest draft picks to the previous season's worst teams. Teams that decide to start tanking often do so by trading away star players in order to reduce payroll and bring in younger prospects. While the terms tanking and rebuilding are sometimes used interchangeably, there are differences between the two concepts.

Their predicted draft rankings are not based solely on their performances during the try-outs as players are evaluated much earlier from their performances during the U-League season, at high school tournaments or in the senior national team.
