Pretty Gorgeous (foaled 24 February 2018) is a French-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the best two-year-olds in Europe in 2020 when she won three of her five races including the Debutante Stakes and the Fillies' Mile

Background

Pretty Gorgeous is a bay filly with a white blaze and three white socks bred in France by a partnership headed by the Ecurie Haras du Cadran. In December 2018 she was put up for auction at the Arqana sale and bought for €55,000 by the bloodstock agent Margaret O'Toole. As a yearling she was consigned to the Tattersalls sale in October 2019 and was bought for 525,000 guineas by the trainer Joseph Patrick O'Brien. [1] [2] Pretty Gorgeous is owned in partnership by O'Brien's mother Anne-Marie and John Oxley racing in alternating colours. She was taken into training with O'Brien at Owning Hill, County Kilkenny.

She is from the tenth crop of foals sired by Lawman who won the Prix du Jockey Club and the Prix Jean Prat in 2006. His other progeny have included Just The Judge, Most Improved, Marcel and Harbour Law. [3] Pretty Gorgeous's dam Lady Gorgeous showed some racing ability, winning one minor event and running third in the Listed Surrey Stakes from thirteen track appearances. [4] She was descended from the British broodmare Adjournment who was the female-line ancestor of Master Derby. [5]

Racing career

2020: two-year-old season

The flat racing season in Great Britain and Ireland was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic: most of the major spring races were either cancelled or rescheduled and subsequent events were held behind closed doors. Pretty Gorgeous made her racecourse debut in a maiden race over one mile at Bellewstown on 2 July when she was ridden by Shane Crosse and went off at odds of 2/1 in nine-runner field. She took the lead three furlongs from the finish and went clear of her rivals to win by five lengths despite being eased down in the closing stages. [6] Crosse was again in the saddle when the filly was stepped up in class for the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse on 6 August. She started favourite but despite making strong progress in the last quarter mile she was beaten into second place by the 14/1 outsider Shale (trained by Joseph O'Brien's brother Donnacha). [7] Sixteen days later Pretty Gorgeous faced Shale again in the Group 2 Debutante Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh and started the 3/1 second favourite behind her rival in an eight-runner field which also included Mother Earth (Fillies' Sprint Stakes). Ridden by Crosse, she raced in mid-division before making good progress approaching the last quarter mile. She overtook Shale inside the final furlong and drew away in the final strides to win by two and a half lengths. [8] After the race Joseph O'Brien said "We felt that she’d definitely get closer to Donnacha’s filly after her run in Leopardstown, because we thought the Curragh would be more suitable for us... I thought Shane gave her a lovely, cool ride today... She's a big, strong lady. She cost a good few quid as a yearling, but she was an outstanding physical specimen at the sales. The sky is the limit for her." [9]

Declan McDonagh took the ride when Pretty Gorgeous was stepped up to Group 1 level and started the 11/10 favourite for the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh on 13 September. Crosse was scheduled to ride but had tested positive for coronavirus and his resulting quarantine meant that he also missed the winning ride on Galileo Chrome in the St Leger. She produced a strong run in the last quarter mile but was unable to overhaul the front-running Shale and finished second, beaten three quarters of a length by her old rival. [10]

On 9 October Pretty Gorgeous was reunited with Crosse when she was sent to England and moved up in distance for the Fillies' Mile at Newmarket Racecourse. The filly had been scheduled to run in the Prix Marcel Boussac a week earlier but the O'Brien contingent was withdrawn en masse when four horses failed drug tests, with the results being attributed to a batch of contaminated feed. [11] She went off the 5/2 favourite ahead of Shale in a ten-runner field which also included Isabella Giles (Rockfel Stakes) and Indigo Girl (May Hill Stakes) as well as Mother Earth and Snowfall, representing the Aidan O'Brien stable. After racing in mid-division she moved up to challenge the front-running Dubai Fountain in the last quarter mile, gained the advantage inside the final furlong and held on to win by half a length from Indigo Girl with the same distance back to "Snowfall" in third. [12] In a bizarre postscript to the race it was revealed that the two Aidan O'Brien runners had carried the wrong number cloths and been ridden by the wrong jockeys, meaning that the filly who finished third was actually Mother Earth. [13] After the race Crosse, who was recording his first Group 1 success said "This is huge. There may be no crowd and no atmosphere, but once you are on the horse's back, it doesn't make a difference... This filly has given me a few great days already, but this is the best of my life. She must be a One Thousand Guineas filly after that as she has loads of speed and she's a miler. Hopefully, all her best days are ahead of her. This takes a lot of edge off what happened in the St. Leger, which you wouldn't want to wish on your worst enemy." [14]

On 19 November Pretty Gorgeous was named Champion Two-year-old Filly at the Cartier Racing Awards. [15] In the official European classification of for 2020 Pretty Gorgeous was given a rating of 113, making her the equal best two-year-old filly of the season alongside Campanelle and Shale. [16]

Lillie Langtry is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred at a small stud in County Cork she was sold as a yearling and raced for the Coolmore organisation. As a two-year-old, she was one of the best juvenile fillies in Ireland winning three of her seven races including the Fillies' Sprint Stakes, Debutante Stakes and Tattersalls Timeform Fillies' 800 as well as finishing third in both the Albany Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She was injured when finishing unplaced in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. In 2010 she recorded her biggest wins when achieving Group One victories in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown. She was retired at the end of the year with a record of five wins from eleven races and has become a successful broodmare, producing three Classic race-winning daughters.

Minding is a champion Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 2016 European Horse of the Year after winning the Epsom Oaks, 1000 Guineas, and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Capricciosa was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from June 1990 until April 1992 she won four of her seven races. She was one of the best juvenile fillies in Britain and Ireland in 1990 when she won four races including the Debutante Stakes, Moyglare Stud Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. She missed the whole of the next season and was then sent to race in the United States where she made no impact in two starts. She was retired from racing to become a broodmare in Japan and produced at least eleven winners.

Listen is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 2007 she won the Listed Saoire Stakes on her debut, finished second in both the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes and then recorded her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. Her subsequent racing career was compromised by injury and she made little impact in two races as a three-year-old. She has had some success as a broodmare in Japan.

As a two-year-old in 2016 she was rated the joint-best filly of her generation trained in Europe, inferior only to the American filly Lady Aurelia. She was unplaced in her next two races before ending her season with a win in the Cheveley Park Stakes.

After finishing unplaced on her debut she won a maiden race and the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes before running second to her stablemate Magical in the Debutante Stakes. She reversed the form to beat Magical in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and then defeated male opposition to take the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère. At the end of the season she was voted Cartier Champion Two-year-old Filly. In the following year she was placed in the 1000 Guineas, Irish 1,000 Guineas and Sun Chariot Stakes.

Necklace is a British, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She had her greatest success as a two-year-old in 2003 when she won two of her four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year failed to win but did finish third in the Beverly D. Stakes and fourth in the Epsom Oaks before being retired from racing with a record of two wins from nine starts in four different counties. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.

In the following year she failed in the Irish Oaks, her principal objective but recorded victories in the Silver Stakes, Ballyroan Stakes and Dance Design Stakes. As a four-year-old in 2006 she failed to win a race but finished second in the Glencairn Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes and Royal Whip Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.

Skitter Scatter American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Skitter Scatter is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2018, she won one minor race in her first four starts but then made rapid improvement to win the Silver Flash Stakes, Debutante Stakes and Moyglare Stud Stakes. At the end of the season she was named Cartier Champion Two-year-old Filly. She failed to win in three starts in 2019.

Magical (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Magical is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who excelled over middle distances and was rated in the top twenty racehorses in the world in 2018 and 2019. She showed considerable ability as a juvenile in 2017, winning the Debutante Stakes and finishing second in the Moyglare Stud Stakes as well as running fourth in both the Prix Marcel Boussac and the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she won the Kilboy Estate Stakes but did not produce her best form until autumn when she took the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes and was narrowly beaten in the Breeders' Cup Turf. In 2019 she won the Alleged Stakes, Mooresbridge Stakes, Tattersalls Gold Cup, Irish Champion Stakes and Champion Stakes as well as finishing second in the Prince of Wales's Stakes, Eclipse Stakes and Yorkshire Oaks. As a five-year-old she was as good as ever, winning the Pretty Polly Stakes and recording repeat victories in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and the Irish Champion Stakes as well as being placed in the International Stakes, Champion Stakes, Breeders' Cup Turf and Hong Kong Cup.

Hermosa (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Hermosa is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed very good form as a juvenile in 2018 when she won two of her seven races including the Weld Park Stakes as well as finishing second in both the Fillies' Mile and the Critérium International and third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She made further improvement as a four-year-old when she was narrowly beaten in the New York Stakes before winning the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes.
