Profield Contractors, also referred to as Profield Contractors Ltd, is a Gibraltar-based construction company founded in 1989. The company has worked on a number of general construction and civil engineering projects in Gibraltar.
The construction company Profield Contractors was established in 1989. [1] Also known as Profield Contractors Ltd, the company is based in Gibraltar and owned by John Summerfield. [1] [2] The general building contractor's clients include the Government of Gibraltar, as well as private customers. Included among their projects are general construction works including design-build, and civil engineering works including geotechnical engineering. Their construction projects have ranged from £200,000 to over £6,000,000. Profield Contractors is a government-approved bidder for works of civil engineering and general construction. [1]
Profield Contractors was one of the companies involved in the renovation of Dudley Ward Tunnel, also known as Dudley Ward Way, and the road approaching it. [3] [4] Gibraltarian Brian Navarro died in February 2002 in a rockfall accident on the road leading to the tunnel, after which the road and tunnel were closed. It was reopened eight years later, on 2 November 2010. [5] The company's involvement in the project commissioned by the government included rockfall mitigation, including a protective canopy over the road approaching the tunnel, earthworks, and infrastructure, as well as building of a new road. Another civil engineering project undertaken by the company is the superstructure for a parking lot to accommodate 1,000 automobiles. The company also engineered the sewage diversion along Devil's Tower Road for Taylor Woodrow. The diversion was necessary for the construction of Filomena House (see below). [4]
The Europa Road Incinerator is a geotechnical engineering project commissioned by the Government of Gibraltar. Profield Contractors was responsible for removal of rocks and installation of rock anchors and catch fences. The government also contracted with the company for the rockfall mitigation works for Cumberland Terraces, a project of affordable homes. [6] [7] This required the permanent installation of a catch fence. [6]
The company built Gardiners House, an apartment building containing six luxury units, on Gardiners Road. Maida Vale House is a block of five townhouses on Engineer Road. The Catalan Terraces, thirteen townhouses at Catalan Bay, are a third example of general construction. All three examples represent new construction for private developers. In addition, Profield Contractors built the Cliftons for Taylor Woodrow. That project entailed renovation of a portion of the Royal Naval Hospital Gibraltar and its conversion to an apartment building with luxury units, Orchid House. In addition, a new floor was added for two penthouses. New construction in that project included three townhouses and a villa. [8]
Their design-build projects include the Gibraltar Cruise Terminal, a government commission. Construction of the terminal entailed renovation and conversion of an unused warehouse on the Western Arm of the North Mole at Gibraltar Harbour. [9] [10] [11] After the walls of the warehouse were deemed structurally sound, the building was gutted, and given a new floor and roof. [9] White stone walls and sunny, Mediterranean hues give the interior an airy, neoclassical appearance. [12] Bishop Canilla House is an apartment building for the aged, with 84 units, including 14 for residents with special needs. The apartment building for the elderly was also commissioned by the Government of Gibraltar, and opened in 2000. [11] [13] Filomena House, for the developer Taylor Woodrow, is a ten-storey apartment building with 44 apartments. The flats range from studios to penthouses and are located on the east side of Gibraltar. Filomena House represents the first "affordable plus" project developed by Taylor Woodrow. [11] [14] Other examples of design-build projects undertaken by Profield Contractors are the additions to St Anne's School and Bishop Fitzgerald's School, both government contracts, and the addition of a new floor to 237 Main Street for a private client. In June 2011, the Minister for Housing Fabian Vinet revealed that the contract for the renovation of the exterior of the Governor's Meadow House had been won by Profield Contractors. The contract from the Government of Gibraltar for the building at Alameda Estate is for £1M. [15] The project includes installation of a new roof, windows, and blinds. [16] Another contract that has been awarded by the government is that of management of the eastside reclamation project which also includes a temporary sea wall. [16] The Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club moved from its location at 26 Queensway [17] to temporary premises at 2 Queensway [18] when the mid-harbour reclamation project left the yacht club landlocked in 2009. [19] [20] Profield Contractors has won the contract to construct a new club house and associated facilities on Coaling Island. [16]

George Wimpey was a British construction firm. Formed in 1880 and based in Hammersmith, it initially operated largely as a road surfacing contractor. The business was acquired by Godfrey Mitchell in 1919, and he developed it into a construction and housebuilding firm. In July 2007, Wimpey merged with Taylor Woodrow to create Taylor Wimpey. Wimpey was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1934.

Dudley Ward Way is a road tunnel through the south-eastern part of the Rock of Gibraltar. It is named after Sir Alfred Dudley Ward, Governor of Gibraltar from 8 June 1962 to 5 August 1965. The road running through the tunnel links the eastern side of The Rock via Sir Herbert Miles Road, with Europa Point, at the southern tip of Gibraltar via Europa Advance Road.

The Queensway Quay Marina is one of three marinas in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. The yachting facility is located at the eastern aspect of the middle section of Gibraltar Harbour. It is the site of what may be the oldest wharf in Gibraltar, Ragged Staff Wharf.
The Royal Naval Hospital Gibraltar (RNH Gibraltar), formerly the British Military Hospital Gibraltar (BMH Gibraltar), was a military hospital founded c. 1903 to provide healthcare for British military personnel and local sailors. The facility, located on Europa Road in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar's South District, comprised three buildings. The hospital was transferred to the Royal Navy in 1963. It closed in 2008, and underwent residential conversion that began prior to the hospital's closure.
The Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club, formerly the Gibraltar Yacht Club, was established by officers of the Royal Navy in 1829. It was one of the first yacht clubs founded outside of Britain. British monarchs and Gibraltarian governors have been patrons of the club; the first visit by a reigning monarch was in 1954. During the latter twentieth century, the naval presence waned and the membership of locals dominated. The club's sailing school was established in 2001, accredited as a teaching facility in 2004, and became a testing centre in 2010. The reclamation projects in the middle section of Gibraltar Harbour necessitated the club's move from 26 Queensway to temporary premises. A new facility is under construction.
Streets in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar are represented by road signs as in the United Kingdom. As of 2007, Gibraltar has a network of 29 kilometres (18 mi) of roads.
Devil's Tower Road is a road in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. The road, in the northeastern part of the settlement, runs south of Gibraltar International Airport, from Winston Churchill Avenue southeast to Eastern Beach Road. It was named after Devil's Tower, a seventeenth-century watchtower that was formerly at the eastern end of the road. By 2011, Devil's Tower Road had been changed to a dual carriageway, with on-street parking eliminated, and the Government's plan to change the name of the road to North Front Avenue met with community opposition. A new access road was planned, such that Winston Churchill Avenue, which crosses the airport runway, would no longer serve as the main road to the Gibraltar-Spain border to intersect with Devil's Tower Road after passing under the eastern edge of the runway. The new road and tunnel, named Kingsway with the approval of Charles III, was officially opened on 31st March 2023.
The Aqua Line 3 of the Mumbai Metro, also known as Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line, is currently under construction in Mumbai, India. When completed, the 33.5 km (20.8 mi) long line will be the first underground metro line in Mumbai, with 27 underground stations and one at-grade station. The line will run from Navy Nagar in the far-south of Mumbai to Aarey Depot in the north-centre, and will include connections to other metro lines, monorail, suburban rail, inter-city rail, and Mumbai Airport. Line 3 is expected to reduce road congestion, and to reduce the load on the Western Line between Bandra and Churchgate.
