Pushkar–Gayatri are a husband-and-wife filmmaker duo from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Their works are noted for their unique style, technical finesse, and intricately woven storylines.

They started as writers and directors with the Tamil feature films – Oram Po (2007), and Va - Quarter Cutting (2010), both quirky dark comedies. In 2017, they wrote and directed Vikram Vedha , which swept the awards that year and was the top-rated Indian film of 2017 on IMDb. In 2022, they remade the critically acclaimed Vikram Vedha in Hindi with Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan. They made an entry as content creators in the streaming space with Suzhal: The Vortex , a tent-pole global show in Amazon Prime Video. They were the writers, show-runners, and producers of the show which won awards in India and abroad. Other notable works they have created include Vadhandhi: The Fable of Velonie (2022) and Aelay (2021).

Personal life

Gayatri and Pushkar are born and brought up in Chennai, the city where they are currently based out of. They did their under-graduation in Visual Communication in Loyola College, Chennai, where they first met.

During and after graduation, they worked with eminent advertising filmmakers such as P.C.Sriram and Manav Menon. They decided to pursue their education further and applied to film schools in the U.S. Gayatri finished her Masters in Fine Art from the University of Chicago and Pushkar finished his Masters in Film Marking from the University of New Orleans.

The two started their careers together with ad-filmmaking. Neither of them are from a film background. To approach producers, they came up with a short-film version of the script of their first film, Oram Po. From then on, they have been full-time feature filmmakers in Tamil. With the release of the Vikram Vedha remake in Hindi, they debuted their entrance to Bollywood.

Production

Under their production house Wallwatcher Films, Pushkar and Gayatri have produced two long-format web series, Suzhal: The Vortex and Vadhandhi: The Fable of Velonie , for Amazon Prime Video, and a feature film, Aelay , on Netflix. Pushkar and Gayatri curate all their projects under Wallwatcher Films and they mentor them as creative producers.

<i>Vikram Vedha</i> 2017 film directed by Pushkar–Gayathri

Vikram Vedha is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language neo-noir action thriller film written and directed by Pushkar–Gayathri and produced by YNOT Studios. The film, which is inspired by the Indian folktale Baital Pachisi, stars R. Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi in titular roles, alongside Shraddha Srinath, Kathir, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Prem, Achyuth Kumar, Hareesh Peradi and Vivek Prasanna. In the film, Inspector Vikram sets out to track down and kill Vedha, a gangster. After voluntarily surrendering himself, Vedha tells Vikram three stories which change his perceptions of good and evil.

Mersal (transl. Zapped) is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film directed by Atlee and produced by Thenandal Studio Limited, in the studio's hundredth film production. The film stars Vijay in triple roles, alongside S. J. Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menen. Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, Hareesh Peradi, Kovai Sarala and Sathyan play supporting roles. It is the second out of the three collaboration between Vijay and Atlee, before they began working with others. The film follows two brothers who were separated after the younger one's birth; Vetri, a vigilante magician who is against the medical crimes and Maaran, a reputed doctor who charges meagre amounts from his patients.

Vikram Vedha is the soundtrack album of the 2017 Indian neo-noir action thriller film of the same name, directed by Pushkar-Gayathri, and produced by S. Sashikanth under the banner YNOT Studios, starring Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi. The soundtrack album and the background score is composed by Sam C. S. with lyrics written by Mohan Rajan, Muthamil, Vignesh Shivan and the composer respectively. Sam had previously worked with Pushkar and Gayathri on television commercials, before they decided to recruit him, after his work on Puriyatha Puthir, which was his debut film.

<i>Mersal</i> (soundtrack) 2017 film score by A. R. Rahman

Mersal is the soundtrack of the 2017 Indian vigilante action film of the same name directed by Atlee, which stars Vijay in a triple role with Nithya Menen, Kajal Aggarwal and Samantha as the female leads. The film, which marked the 100th production of Thenandal Studio Limited, has a soundtrack album features four tracks composed by A. R. Rahman, in his first collaboration with Atlee and his third collaboration with Vijay after composing for Udhaya (2004) and Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (2007), whilst Vivek penned the lyrics for all the songs in the film's soundtrack, also in his first association with Rahman.

Arun Prabu Purushothaman is an Indian film director and actor who works in Tamil cinema. He is known for directing and writing Aruvi.

G. K. Vishnu is an Indian cinematographer who predominantly works in the Tamil film industry.
