R. Nallakannu (born 26 December 1925) is an Indian politician. He is a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI). He was the former State Secretary of the Communist Party of India of Tamil Nadu. [1]
Nallakannu was born in the temple town of Tiruvaikuntam,Thoothukudi district. Born in an affluent family,he was patriotic from a young age and participated in the Indian freedom struggle.
At age 15,Nallakannu joined the communist movement. He belonged to the action force and was sentenced to over 14 years in jail. He was released after 7 years,as a pact was signed by the communist leaders and the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Highly respected even by opposition parties,he uses restraint when he voices concerns about issues and events. Nallakannu is respected as one of the last surviving leaders who founded the Communist movement in India.[ citation needed ]
He is also valued as a learned speaker and a great social reformer,and all his life he fought for equal opportunities for the most socially suffered communities. He stayed with them,had food with them and taught them how to fight for their own rights from the upper classes. He also made considerable progress in lifting the living conditions of poor people in Nanguneri Taluk and neighboring villages,mostly during the period when he was spending his time underground. He is known as an individual ready to make any sacrifice to uphold the principles of a casteless society.[ citation needed ]
In 2018 he individually fought a court case in Madurai,and won at the High court which ordered a ban on digging sands from the Thamirabarani River of his native place. On 2 December 2010,the court banned the taking of sand from this river for 5 years. [2] He undertook many hunger strikes,some lasting more than 20 days. Once,the government built a dam because of his hunger strike. He was honored by the Vice President of the People's Republic of China during his visit to Beijing. [3]
In 1999,Nallakannu stood for Coimbatore constituency on loksabha elections. Even though he secured 43.21 percent of total votes,he was defeated by CP Radhakrishnan. [4]

As a writer,Nallakannu wrote many books based on social problems,river interaction possibilities in India,agricultural reforms and about communist-based articles..[ citation needed ]
Nallakannu married Ranjitham Ammal,a retired school headmistress from Srivaikuntam in Tuticorin district,with whom he had two daughters. Ranjitham died in Chennai in 2016 at age 82. [9]
In 2019,Nallakannu and his family were asked to vacate the house they were living in,which was allotted to them as a tribute to his contributions in the political field. Multiple political leaders expressed their indignation with this decision. DMK President MK Stalin stated that,as a political leader who has been held in high regard,Nallakannu should be allotted another house. K Annamalai leader of BJP TN has expressed in an interview that one of his most respectable opposition leaders to be Communist Party in TN. [10]
Chakravarti Rajagopalachari BR,popularly known as Rajaji or C.R.,also known as Mootharignar Rajaji,was an Indian statesman,writer,lawyer,and independence activist. Rajagopalachari was the last Governor-General of India,as when India became a republic in 1950 the office was abolished. He was also the only Indian-born Governor-General,as all previous holders of the post were British nationals. He also served as leader of the Indian National Congress,Premier of the Madras Presidency,Governor of West Bengal,Minister for Home Affairs of the Indian Union and Chief Minister of Madras state. Rajagopalachari founded the Swatantra Party and was one of the first recipients of India's highest civilian award,the Bharat Ratna. He vehemently opposed the use of nuclear weapons and was a proponent of world peace and disarmament. During his lifetime,he also acquired the nickname 'Mango of Salem'.

Muthuvel Karunanidhi was an Indian writer and politician who served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for almost two decades over five terms between 1969 and 2011. He is popularly referred to as Kalaignar (Artist) and Mutthamizh Arignar for his contributions to Tamil literature. He had the longest intermittent tenure as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu with 6,863 days in office. He was also a long-standing leader of the Dravidian movement and ten-time president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam political party. Karunanidhi has the record of never losing an election to the Tamil Nadu Assembly,having won 13 times since his first victory in 1957. Before entering politics,he worked in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter. He also made contributions to Tamil literature,having written stories,plays,novels,and a multiple-volume memoir. Karunanidhi died on 7 August 2018 at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai after a series of prolonged,age-related illnesses.

It was founded by the former member of parliament of the Republic of India G. K. Moopanar on 29 March 1996 as a breakaway faction from the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee.

Diwan Bahadur Rettamalai Srinivasan,commonly known as R. Srinivasan,was a Scheduled Caste activist and politician from then Madras Presidency of British India. He is a Paraiyar icon and was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and was also an associate of B. R. Ambedkar. He is remembered today as one of the pioneers of the Scheduled caste movement in India. He founded the Adi dravida mahajana sabha in 1893.
The tenth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 24 June 1991. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) –Indian National Congress (INC) alliance won the elections in a landslide and AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa became the chief minister. This was her first term in office. The united strength of AIADMK,the alliance with the Congress,and the wave of public sympathy in the wake of Rajiv Gandhi assassination combined to produce a massive victory for the AIADMK. The DMK could only win 2 seats. This was the worst performance of the DMK since it entered electoral politics in the 1957.
The sixth legislative assembly election of Tamil Nadu was held on 10 June 1977. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won the election defeating its rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). M. G. Ramachandran,the AIADMK founder and a leading Tamil film actor,was sworn in as Chief Minister for the first time. The election was a four-cornered contest between the AIADMK,DMK,the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Janata Party. Earlier in 1972,M.G.R had founded the AIADMK following his expulsion from the DMK after differences arose between him and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi. On 31 January 1976,Karunanidhi's government was dismissed by the central government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi citing non-co-operation for MISA and President's rule was imposed on the state. Karunanidhi had been at odds with Indira Gandhi over his opposition to Emergency and allied with Janata Party founded by Jayaprakash Narayan. M.G.R remained as Chief Minister until he died in 1987,winning the next two elections held in 1980 and 1984. Due to this feat,M.G.R inadvertently became an example for entry of famous actors to enter politics,with a hope that they too may become Chief minister one day. then Telugu superstar N.T.R followed M.G.R's suit in 1983 and won the Andhra Pradesh general Elections to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Since then,no other actor has been able to recreate M.G.R's achievements in electoral Politics.
A. Vaidyanatha Iyer,also known as Madurai Vaidyanatha Iyer or Ayyar was an Indian activist,politician and freedom-fighter who spearheaded the temple entry movement in Madras Presidency in 1939.

The Fourteenth Legislative Assembly Election was held on 13 April 2011 to elect members from 234 constituencies in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Results were released on 13 May 2011. Two major parties Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced the election as coalitions of multiple political parties:DMK front consisted of 8 parties and the AIADMK of 11 parties. Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK),which had contested the previous elections independently,allied with the AIADMK coalition. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam boycotted the election following a disagreement with Jayalalithaa over seat-sharing. The outgoing Karunanidhi government was noted for the construction of new assembly building in Chennai,execution of various developmental projects,and implementation of programmes including free health care for the poor and issuance of a range of freebies such as color television to all. However,these were heavily overshadowed by other major issues such as incessant power cuts in households and industries,excessive sand mining,increasing prices of essential items,2G spectrum case and undue influence of Karunanidhi's extended family in various aspects of Tamil politics and business and even media.
