The artist known as r e a (born 1962) is an Aboriginal Australian artist, also known as r e a Saunders, sometimes written Rea Saunders. As of 2019 [update] r e a is a lecturer within the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Unit at the University of Queensland. [1]
The foundation of their work began in photography, digital media, sound and installation art. Today r e a works in a research-led interdisciplinary, experimental digital arts practice.
r e a was born in Coonabarabran, New South Wales, in 1962. They are of the Gamilaraay and Wailwan people from the Central West region of NSW, and Biripi people, from the Mid North Coast. r e a's family moved to Sydney in 1968. [2]
r e a initially studied a TAFE course in Electrical Trades at Petersham, New South Wales in 1989, and then started to move towards art a year later enrolled to studying Creative Arts at the Eora Centre in Darlington, New South Wales. [3]
r e a has received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) from the University of New South Wales in 1993, a Masters of Visual Arts at the Australian National University, a Masters of Science, Digital Imaging and Design, New York University & a PhD in Visual Anthropology, from the UNSW Art & Design, University of New South Wales, in 2019. r e a started to exhibit work in 1990 at the Eora Centre, then in 1992, in their second year undergraduate at CoFA, University of New South Wales. r e a's first digital work: Look Who's Calling The Kettle Black was made in 1992, followed by new works in 1993 at the Performance Space and Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in Sydney. In 1994 their work was exhibited in Localities of Desire: Contemporary Art in an International World, [4] Don’t Leave Me This Way: Art in the Age of AIDS, [5] Blackness: Blak City Culture! [6] and True Colours: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Artists Raise the Flag. [7]
In 1995 r e a's first solo exhibition was titled Ripped Into Pieces: Blak Body, at Performance Space. [8]
in 1997, at the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists' Co-op they had a solo exhibition as a part of the 1997 Festival of the Dreaming: a celebration of the art and culture of Indigenous peoples from around the world called EYE/I'MMABLAKPIECE. [9] The installation art exhibited aimed to challenge the male gaze through the use of mirrors. [9]

Her Collection Look Who's Calling The Kettle Black is a collection of photographic print in three colours. [11] [12]

The Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative was founded in 1987 in the Sydney suburb of Redfern, New South Wales. Among the legacies of the Co-operative are the Deadly Awards for achievement in the Indigenous Australian community, which occurred annually from 1995 to 2013. The 20th anniversary of the Co-operative was celebrated in 2007 with an exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW.
Hetti Kemerre Perkins is an Aboriginal Australian art curator and writer. She is known for her work at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where she was the senior curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the gallery from around 1998 until 2011, and for many significant exhibitions and projects.
Destiny Deacon HonFRPS is an Indigenous Australian photographer and media artist. She has exhibited photographs and films across Australia and also internationally, focusing on politics and exposing the disparagement around Indigenous Australian cultures. She is credited with introducing the term "Blak" to refer to Indigenous Australians' contemporary art, culture and history.
Maringka Baker is an Aboriginal artist from central Australia. She lives in the Pitjantjatjara community of Kaṉpi, South Australia, and paints for Tjungu Palya, based in nearby Nyapaṟi.Maringka is known for her paintings. Maringka paints sacred stories from her family's Dreaming (spirituality). As well as the important cultural meanings they carry, her paintings are known for being rich in colour and contrast. She often paints the desert landscape in bright green colours, and contrasts it against reds and ochres to depict landforms. She also uses layers of contrasting colours to show the detail of the desert in full bloom.

Brenda L. Croft is an Aboriginal Australian artist, curator, writer, and educator working across contemporary Indigenous and mainstream arts and cultural sectors. Croft was a founding member of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in 1987.
Mavis Ngallametta, née Marbunt, was an Indigenous Australian painter and weaver. She was a Putch clan elder and a cultural leader of the Wik and Kugu people of Aurukun, Cape York Peninsula, Far North Queensland. Her work is held in national and state collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide and Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.

Yaritji Young is a Pitjantjatjara woman artist from Pukatja, a community within the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands and she now lives at Rocket Bore; a homeland north of Amata. Young is a significant Australian Aboriginal artist and senior law women who is to committed to fostering law and culture and this forms a core part of her artistic practice. Most of Young's paintings are drawn from the Tjala Dreaming.
Crusoe Kuningbal or Guningbal (1922–1984) was an Aboriginal Australian artist from Maningrida in the Northern Territory, known for a pointillist technique and tall, slim sculptures of mimih spirits. In addition to his art, Kuningbal was a prominent cultural figure in his region, as he sang and performed in important ceremonies, most notably that of the Mamurrng.
Gail Mabo is an Australian visual artist who has had her work exhibited across Australia. She is the daughter of land rights campaigner Eddie Mabo and educator and activist Bonita Mabo. She was formerly a dancer and choreographer.
