Railteam B.V. is a closed company with limited liability (B.V.) based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. [1] It operates as an alliance of European railway companies in the field of international high-speed rail in Europe, modelled on the airline alliances [2] and was founded in Brussels on 2 July 2007.

Taken together, the Railteam alliance has more than 1000 high-speed trains and 44 lounges. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] With the members of the Railteam alliance, passengers can reach over 100 European destinations on high-speed trains. [10]

Any railway company in Europe that meets the criteria of the alliance can become a member.

There are full members of Railteam who hold shares in the company, as well as associate members. All participating railways act as strategic partners within the Railteam alliance and remain entrepreneurially independent. In this alliance, the high-speed trains Intercity Express, TGV, Eurostar, TGV Lyria, Thalys and Railjet are jointly operated. The transport network of the long-distance trains offered in Railteam covers about 100 cities in seven countries (Belgium, Germany, France, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland), which are connected by a network of about 15,000 kilometres.

The main hubs of the route network are Brussels-South, Lille/Lille Europe, Paris, Cologne Hbf, Frankfurt Hbf, Stuttgart, Basel and Zurich.

Goals

Europe's high-speed railways create added value for passengers by joining forces and continuously working to increase the capacity of the high-speed network and upgrade routes. The aim is to offer passengers seamless travel chains between many European cities, with shorter journey times and more frequent connections, as well as uniform service and quality standards. The development of a common network should thus offer a competitive alternative to car and plane for destinations within Europe. [14]

Company form

Railteam is a corporation under Dutch law, a so-called closed company with limited liability (besloten vennootschap, [15] or B.V.) with its registered office in Amsterdam, comparable to a GmbH in Germany. The organisational structure is a mixture of normal company structure and project structure.

Services to the passengers

HOTNAT

The HOTNAT (hop on the next available train) protection is a commercial agreement between the Railteam members. In case of a missed train connection between their high speed trains, HOTNAT allows passengers to hop on the next available high-speed train without additional cost, even when travelling with two separate train tickets. However, there are restrictions to the HOTNAT protection. It is valid:

The passenger must ask for a "hop on the next available train" stamp on the ticket or a form from the conductor (train manager) of the delayed or cancelled train, or from the staff at the service desk at the station. [16]

It is not necessary to change the ticket or to rebook. Depending on seat availability, the passenger can sit in any available seat. This can mean standing up when the train is full.

Besides HOTNAT, there are other protections for rail passengers to use the next possible train without additional costs when they miss a connecting train and lose their seat reservation due to a delay or cancellation of the first train:

Lounges for frequent travellers

As a first step towards unification, mutual recognition of the frequent traveller programmes with regard to access to the lounges [19] at the stations of the member companies was completed. Thus, since 1 July 2007, holders of a DB BahnCard with bahn.comfort status and holders of an SBB 1st class general season ticket have been allowed to use the lounges of the participating companies.

Travelling at speeds up to 320 km/h (200 mph), they are aimed at business travellers and long-distance commuters and marketed by Deutsche Bahn as an alternative to flights.

The HSL-Zuid, is a 125 kilometre-long Dutch high-speed railway line running between the Amsterdam metropolitan area and the Belgian border, with a branch to Breda, North Brabant. Together with the Belgian HSL 4 it forms the Schiphol–Antwerp high-speed railway. Originally scheduled to be in service by 2007, the first public operations began on 7 September 2009, after a ceremony on 6 September.

Thalys PBKA is a high-speed trainset, manufactured by the French company GEC-Alsthom, and used on the international Eurostar service. Originally built for Thalys they were intended to operate between Paris, Brussels, Köln and Amsterdam, forming the abbreviation PBKA. They were initially intended to be sole rolling stock of the service, but their extreme cost and complexity due to their quadri-current capability led the order of a simpler tri-current sister class, the Thalys PBA, a TGV Réseau derivative, with which they can work in multiple.

TGV Duplex is a French high-speed train of the TGV family, manufactured by Alstom, and operated by the French national railway company SNCF. They were the first TGV trainsets to use bi-level passenger carriages with a seating capacity of 508 passengers, increasing capacity on busy high-speed lines. While the TGV Duplex started as a small component of the TGV fleet, it has become one of the system's workhorses.

City Night Line, abbreviated CNL, was a train category of German railway company Deutsche Bahn for overnight passenger train services between Germany and neighbouring European countries. In late 2015, Deutsche Bahn announced that it planned to terminate all night train services in December 2016, and this plan was implemented on 11 December 2016. France has a large network of high-speed rail lines. As of June 2021, the French high-speed rail network comprises 2,800 km (1,740 mi) of tracks, making it one of the largest in Europe and the world. The first French high-speed railway, the LGV Sud-Est, linking the suburbs of Paris and Lyon, opened in 1981 and was at that time the only high-speed rail line in Europe.

Eurostar Group is a holding company founded by SNCF Voyageurs, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, NMBS/SNCB, and Federated Hermes Infrastructure in 2022. It aims at merging the operations of Thalys and Eurostar high-speed rail services between France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany.

The France Rail Pass was a railway ticket available until December 2018 for non-European residents provided by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF), or French railway. The France Rail Pass provided unlimited travel for non-European residents on the national rail network of France. The pass provided unlimited three to nine days of unlimited rail travel within one month. The France Rail Pass is a SNCF Voyages et Développement product for the SNCF company.

Mozart was an express train that linked Paris with Vienna via Strasbourg, Stuttgart and Munich. The service began in 1954, as an F-Zug named Mozart Express running between Strasbourg and Salzburg, before being extended ten years later. In 1983 it was re-classified as an FD-Zug and it was added to the EuroCity network in 1989. It operated until 2007, when it was replaced by a TGV service on the newly opened LGV Est. It was named after the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and served many cities with which he had an association.

Avelia Euroduplex, more commonly known as just Euroduplex or TGV 2N2 in France, is a high-speed double-decker train manufactured by Alstom. It is primarily operated by the French national railway company SNCF, and also in operation with the Moroccan national railway company ONCF. It is the 3rd generation of the TGV Duplex.
