Kalamandalam Ramachandran Unnithan is a Kathakali exponent from Kerala, India. He received several awards including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2016. His biography titled Kachaiyum Mizhukkum was published in 2015. [1]

Biography

Ramachandran Unnithan was born on 1951 March 8, at Ezhukon Placott House in Kottarakkara, Kollam district, to Vasu Pillai and Gomatiamma. [2] Karithra Vasupillai taught him the basics of Kathakali. [2] He studied Kathakali at Kerala Kalamandalam from 1962 to 1975 and passed the 6 year Diploma and 2 year Post Graduate Diploma. [3] [4] In Kalamandalam Unnithan studied Kathakali under Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, Kalamandalam Gopi and Sadanam Krishnan Kutty. [3] He is an exit in the Thadi role in the Kathakali. [3] In his autobiography Unnithan said that one of his mentors, Sadanam Krishnan Kutty, advised him to focus on role of Thadi. [2] His most popular roles are Mannan in Lavanasuravadham (Ramayana) and Bharata Malayan in Nizhal kuth (Mahabharata). [1]

He lives in Vettikattiri in Thrissur district. [3]

Sadanam Krishnankutty is a performer of Kathakali, a classical dance-drama form of Kerala, South India. A recipient of Kerala State Kathakali award and Kalamandalam fellowship, he has played a wide range of characters in his acts. He received the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 2002, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2007, Honorary D.litt from Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Thirur, Kerala in 2021 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2021.

Kalamandalam Appukutty Poduval (1924–2008) was a maddalam maestro who rose to prominence by his aesthetically pleasing taps on the instrument—a vital percussion accompaniment for Kathakali, the classical dance-drama from Kerala in south India. A disciple of the legendary Venkichan Swami, he, along with chenda exponent, Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval, ushered in a new spring in the acoustics of their performing art.

Balakrishnan taught Kathakali at the International Center for Kathakali in Delhi from 1974 to 2006 and became the Principal of Perur Gandhi Seva Sadanam in 1980. He has written four books.
