The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards (RNG Awards) are one of the awards in India in the field of journalism. Named after Ramnath Goenka, the awards have been held annually since 2006, with the 12th edition being held in 2017. The awards are given for both print journalism as well as broadcast journalism, with a total of 25 different prizes being awarded in 2017 for excellence in journalism during 2016. [2] [3] In Fact Indian Express group started, Ramnath Goenka India Press Photo Award in 2004. This award was only for media photographers and the winners was announced in December 2004 at Nariman House, Express tower in Mumbai and Photo Journalist Shailendra Pandey won The First Picture of the year award.

Past winners have included Kuldip Nayar (Lifetime award), Siddharth Varadarajan ( The Hindu ), Shashi Tharoor, Dionne Bunsha, Muzamil Jaleel ( The Indian Express ), Rajdeep Sardesai, Karan Thapar (CNN IBN), Kishalay Bhattacharjee, Ravish Kumar, Sushil Mohapatra(NDTV) Umashankar Singh (Mojo) NDTV, Nidhi Razdan (NDTV), Neelesh Mishra ( Hindustan Times ), Christophe Jaffrelot ( The Caravan ), Mark Tully (BBC), Arnab Goswami (Times Now) and Sudhir Chaudhary (Zee News) among others. [4] [5] [6] [7] Foreign journalists to have won the award for Foreign Correspondent Covering India include Amelia Gentleman ( The New York Times International Edition ) and Stephanie Nolen ( The Globe and Mail ). The Ramnath Goenka Memorial Debate, started in 2007, is also held during the event. [11]

Award categories

Over the years, the awards categories have changed. Awards can remain ungiven if there is no suitable winner, such as for the Ramnath Goenka Memorial Award For Lifetime Achievement In Journalism. The awards also have a cash prize, which over the years has also changed. Award categories during the 12th edition included: [12]

Past awards have included categories such as 'Excellence in HIV/AID Reporting Award', a joint initiative of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Indian Express Group. [13] Other past awards include 'Priya Chandrashekhar Memorial Award For Excellence In Editing' and the 'Prakash Kardaley Memorial Award For Civic Journalism'. [10] In 2020, the 'conflict reporting' category was removed for the year. [14]

Shaili Chopra is an Indian business journalist, author and entrepreneur. She is the founder of SheThePeople.TV, an Indian digital media website that focuses on women related news and entertainment in video format. As a business journalist, she is known for working at NDTV-profit and ETNOW and has won the 2012 Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Business Journalism among various other awards. She then switched to being an entrepreneur and wrote four books. Her ventures are India's women's channel SheThePeople.TV and GolfingIndian.com. Her books include Feminist Rani by Penguin, When I Was 25 by Random House, Big Connect- Social Media and Indian Politics by Random House, and Birdies in Business by Times Books.

Muzamil Jaleel is the deputy editor at the Indian Express based in New Delhi. He was a visiting scholar at the University of California Berkeley. On another fellowship, he worked in London for the Guardian, the Observer, and The Times newspapers. From sex scandal to the Amarnath land row in the recent past to major stories over the years, Muzamil is known for his investigative stories and exposés that have shaken up and even brought down governments in the state.

The Caravan is an Indian English-language, long-form narrative journalism magazine covering politics and culture. It was initially launched in 1940 by Vishwa Nath, becoming a prominent monthly magazine before ceasing publication in 1988. The magazine was revived in 2009 by Anant Nath, who aimed to create a platform for South Asia's literary talents with an emphasis on politics, art, and culture. Since then, it has received multiple awards, including the Louis M. Lyons Award for Integrity in Journalism.

<i>Inglorious Empire</i> 2017 non-fiction book by Shashi Tharoor

Inglorious Empire: What the British Did to India, first published in India as An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India, is a work of non-fiction by Shashi Tharoor, an Indian politician and diplomat, on the effects of British colonial rule on India. The book has received mixed reviews. In 2017, Tharoor won the 2017 Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award and the 2019 Sahitya Akademi Award for this work.

Scroll.in, simply referred to as Scroll, is an Indian digital news publication. Founded in 2014, it is owned by SCSN Pvt Ltd.

Uma Sudhir is an Indian journalist, who is the executive editor of the South Indian division of the television news network NDTV. Sudhir has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award and the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediapersons.
