Randall Park Mall was a shopping mall located in the village of North Randall, Ohio, United States. It opened on August 11, 1976 on the site of what used to be the Randall Park Race Track. After over a decade of decline, it closed on March 12, 2009. The former Dillard's store and interior of the mall were demolished in 2015 to make way for an industrial park, and the remaining anchor tenants were demolished in 2017 after they all closed down. Amazon built a new distribution center on the site in 2018.
In 1966, Dominic Visconsi proposed building Garfield Mall in nearby Garfield Heights. In 1968, voters gave their blessing to the project, and the next year a proposal was revealed. Garfield Mall was to have heated underground parking, and elevator and escalator access to stores such as: JCPenney, Sears, Higbee's, and Halle's. In 1971, Youngstown developer Edward J. DeBartolo planned a shopping-apartment-office complex nearby, so Garfield Mall was scaled down and the department stores slated for Garfield Mall instead signed with DeBartolo.
Randall Park Mall was built on the site of the Randall Park Race Track, a horse racing park immediately south of Thistledown Race Track. DeBartolo envisioned Randall Park as a "city within a city", with the mall, with 200 shops, three 14-story apartments, two 20-story office buildings, and a performing arts center that was intended to compete with the Front Row Theater. The total construction cost was $175 million. [1]
Randall Park Mall opened on August 11, 1976. The mall's architect, Frank DeBartolo (Edward's younger brother), opened the mall with actress Dina Merrill in 1976. Upon its opening, the mall had 5 anchor stores: Sears, JCPenney, the May Company, Higbee's, and Horne's. JCPenney opened in March 1976, 5 months before the rest of the mall opened. Sears did not open until February 1977. [2] Halle's had plans to open a store at the mall across from Higbees, but plans were cancelled when Halle's went bankrupted in 1982. When it opened, Randall Park claimed the title of "The World's Largest Shopping Center", but the title was short-lived. [1] [3] [4] In 1992, DeBartolo announced major remerchandising plans. [5]
Great Northern Mall, in the west side suburb of North Olmsted, opened at about the same time as Randall Park. Nearby Euclid Square Mall is also a product of the mid-1970s mall building boom.
When it opened in 1976, Randall Park Mall had a three-screen cinema run by General Cinema Corporation. The lobby was one storefront wide, with steep steps leading to the concession stand. The screens were in three side by side auditoriums that opened off the concession stand level. More steps led up a second story to restrooms, the projection booth, and GCC office space.
The cinema became a second-run theater in 1991, and closed in 1993. After that, until the mall's closure, it was used as storage for Diamond's Men's Store, its adjoining neighbor. By the 2000s, Diamond's had extended their display window to include the theater's entrance.
In 1999, Loews Cineplex Entertainment opened a 12-screen Magic Johnson Theatres in the space originally designated for the never-built Halle's anchor. The theater became "O Theater" (with the slogan "O what a bargain!"), after Loews Cineplex Entertainment was bought out by AMC Theatres in 2006. O Theater offered first-run movies at matinee prices but the theater closed in early 2009.
The mall's decline began in December 1994 when Edward J. DeBartolo died. [6] Two years after DeBartolo’s death, DeBartolo Realty Corporation merged with competitor Simon Property Group to form Simon DeBartolo Group, gaining ownership of Randall Park. The next year, the mall's occupancy was 73%, which was well below the national average of 85%. [7] However, by 2000, that figure had reached 92%, fostering hopes of a full recovery for the institution, though these hopes were short lived once JCPenney announced the closure of their outlet store at the mall that autumn. [8]
The first anchor store to close at the mall was Horne's, which closed when the chain filed for bankruptcy in 1992. That same year, Higbee's was renovated into Dillard's, and in 1993 The May Company became Kaufmann's. Three years after that, the lower level of the Horne's store was converted into LaSalle Furniture and the upper level was converted into Burlington Coat Factory. The JCPenney store was converted into an outlet store in October 1998, but closed in January 2001 due to falling sales and as a result of closures of 44 locations nationwide. [9] [10] Dillard's closed its Randall Park Mall Store in March 2003, [11] shortly after an incident where an off duty police officer, who was moonlighting as a security guard, apprehended a suspected shoplifter and injured him by slamming his head on the floor. The suspect died in the hospital two days later. In May 2003, two months after the closure of the Dillard's store, the security was sentenced to three years in prison for murdering the suspect. [12] By 2004, about 50% of the mall was vacant, including the former Dillard's and JCPenney. The infrastructure was physically dilapidated, and many area residents viewed the mall as unsafe. Many of the vacant store fronts were completely walled off and the escalators and fountains were shut off. [3] [13] In 2002, the mall was sold to the Farbman Group. [14] In turn they sold Randall Park to investor Haywood Whichard for $6 million – just fifteen percent of the original construction cost. [6] [15] As the mall declined, the stores and buildings around it did so too.
Kaufmann's was rebranded into Macy's in 2006. In June 2007, it was announced that Cleveland-based trade school Ohio Technical College would acquire more than 200,000 square feet (19,000 m2) of space at the mall. The school's PowerSports Institute occupied the former JCPenney and Firestone Complete Auto Care areas. [16] [17] On December 28, 2007, it was announced that Macy’s would close three stores in Ohio, with the Randall Park location being one of the three. The store's final day of business was February 16, 2008. [18]
On May 21, 2008, North Randall mayor David Smith announced that Whichard Real Estate had decided to close the mall by June 12, 2008. The few dozen small stores inside the sprawling, mostly empty, mall had until June 12 to close or move into empty storefronts on nearby roads. Burlington Coat Factory and Sears, which could be accessed from outside the mall, would stay open, as would the movie theater and Ohio Technical College's PowerSport Institute. [19]
County records showed the company owed more than $200,000 in unpaid property taxes, and had taken out multiple mortgages on the mall. On June 5, 2008, it was announced that Randall Park Mall was being sold for an undisclosed sum to United Church Builders. The deal was expected to be finalized in the next 30 to 90 days. Ken Geis, CEO of UCB, felt it could be best suited for housing, education, research, and medical operations. As of May 2009, UCB had not finalized the deal for the mall.
On February 26, 2009, Sears announced that it would close its Randall Park location, as part of an effort to close 24 under-performing Sears and Kmart locations across the country. The last of the remaining small inside stores closed or moved out by March 12, 2009, the same day the mall closed, leaving the mall empty aside from Burlington Coat Factory, Sears, Ohio Technical College's satellite campus, and Furniture Mattress Liquidators, all of which have direct external access. All power to the mall was turned off in May 2009. Sears closed on June 14, 2009.
From 2013-2015, Cleveland-based photographer and artist Johnny Joo photographed the mall in a state of abandonment. Joo's photos were shared around the world when posted in a 2014 Buzzfeed article on abandoned malls across the United States. [20] [21] [22] [23]
In March 2014, it was announced that the vacant mall would be demolished by Industrial Realty Group for the purpose of constructing an industrial park. [6] [24] [25] Property transfer occurred mid-July of that year; [26] demolition began the following December 29. [4] [27]
Demolition of the mall began December 29, 2014, on the former Higbee's/Dillard's anchor store, followed by the mall interior. The demolition and excavation company Sitetech Inc. of Grafton, Ohio was hired to do the work. As of July 2015, only the former anchor buildings (excluding the former Dillard's) remained standing.
On January 16, 2015, Burlington Coat Factory closed.
On May 5, 2016, calls came into the North Randall Fire Department for the former Magic Johnson Theater. Five surrounding agencies were dispatched to the theater. Fire was ruled arson by North Randall Fire Department. [28]
In July 2017, reports emerged that online retailer Amazon was considering the site of the former mall as a space for a new fulfillment center. [29] [30] On August 25, 2017, it was officially announced that Amazon would demolish the mall's remaining anchor stores and build an 855,000-square-foot warehouse, bringing 2,000 full-time jobs to the region. All remaining anchor buildings were demolished in August 2017, except for the former Sears and Amazon opened the facility in 2018. [33]
Southern Park is a shopping mall in Boardman, Ohio, United States, serving the Youngstown–Warren metropolitan area. It was developed by the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation in 1970, and is now owned by Washington Prime Group. The mall, which is the largest shopping destination in Mahoning County, has approximately 1,018,400 square feet (94,610 m2) of space. Its anchor stores are JCPenney and Macy's, with junior anchors H&M, Shoe Dept. Encore, and Planet Fitness.
Southland Mall, originally known as Cutler Ridge Mall, is a shopping mall in Cutler Bay, Florida. It opened in 1978 as an extension of the Cutler Ridge Shopping Center, which itself was opened in 1960. Subsequent additions extended the mall in the early to mid-1980s.
Rolling Acres Mall was a shopping mall located in the Rolling Acres area of Akron, Ohio, United States. Built in 1975, it originally included approximately 21 stores, with Sears as the main anchor store. Later expansions added several more stores including anchor stores JCPenney, Montgomery Ward, and O'Neil's, along with a movie theater and food court. Montgomery Ward was converted to Higbee's in 1986, and then to Dillard's in 1992, while O'Neil's became May Company Ohio, Kaufmann's, and then finally Macy's. The fifth anchor store was Target, added in 1995. At its peak, the mall had over 150 stores. It underwent a sharp decline in tenancy throughout the 1990s and into the first decade of the 21st century, resulting in the relocation of Target and closure of Dillard's. Macy's and the mall itself both shuttered in 2008, although Sears remained operational until 2011, and JCPenney as an outlet store until 2013. Rolling Acres Mall was publicized after its closure as an example of a dead mall, and non-retail ventures operated out of the former locations of Target, Sears, and Dillard's. The mall was finally demolished in stages between 2017 and 2019, with Amazon building a distribution facility on the former site soon after.
Summit Mall is a one-story, 850,000-square-foot (79,000 m2) enclosed shopping mall located at 3265 W. Market Street in the Akron suburb of Fairlawn., and with the closing of both Chapel Hill Mall and Rolling Acres Mall, is the only remaining mall in Summit County.
Chapel Hill Mall was a shopping mall located in Akron, Ohio, United States. It was built by Richard "R.B." Buchholzer and Forest City Enterprises, and opened in 1967. At its peak the mall featured more than 100 stores, with Sears, JCPenney, and Macy's as anchor tenants. In 2021, after several years of financial issues and ownership changes, the mall was purchased by Industrial Commercial Properties with the intent of turning it into a business park. Within a few months, the mall was permanently closed.
SouthPark Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Strongsville, Ohio, United States, a Greater Cleveland suburb. Its anchor stores are Dick's Sporting Goods, Dillard's, JCPenney, Macy's, and a 14-screen Cinemark movie theater. Kohl's is also an anchor, though located on the outskirts of the plaza. Being one of the largest shopping centers in Ohio at 1,677,272 square feet (155,823.7 m2), SouthPark Mall is also ranked as one of the largest shopping malls in the United States. The mall features over 170 specialty shops and restaurants, and is the largest retail destination in Northern Ohio.
Westgate Mall is a Greater Cleveland suburban shopping center established in the mid-1950s and revitalized in 2007 after a decline in visitors since the 1990s. The original building was located at the intersection of Center Ridge Road and West 210th Street Fairview Park, Ohio at the boundary of Rocky River, Ohio. Westgate Mall is now known as "Westgate", and is now an outdoor shopping center.
The Shoppes at Parma, formerly known as Parmatown Mall, is a shopping plaza located in Parma, Ohio, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Cleveland. It is located at the southwest corner of Ridge Road and West Ridgewood Drive. It is anchored by Walmart, Burlington, Marc's and Dick's Sporting Goods. The plaza opened as a shopping plaza in 1956 and was enclosed in the mid-1960s and has become an outdoor plaza once again. Its original anchors were Higbee's (1967) and May Company (1960). Higbee's became Dillard's in 1992, and closed in 2000. The old Higbee's structure was demolished and replaced with a new Walmart in 2004. May Company became Kaufmann's in 1993 and Kaufmann's became Macy's in 2006. A Kresge also served as a fourth anchor store until it was closed in the early 1980s to make way for an expansion. Parts of the original plaza remain open-air, with Chuck E. Cheese's and Marc's as major tenants. The mall was renovated in the early 2000s and was renovated to be an outdoor shopping center in 2017, with the interior demolished.
Euclid Square Mall was a shopping mall in Euclid, Ohio, United States. It was opened in 1977 as a regional mall with two anchor stores: local chains Higbee's, and May Co. It was demolished from 2017 to 2018.
Midway Mall was a 940,174 sq ft (87,345 m2) square foot regional shopping mall in Elyria, Ohio. Lorain County's only enclosed regional mall, it sits on Ohio State Route 57, about 1/8 mile from Interstate 80 and Interstate 90. As of 2023, with former anchor Dunham's Sports closing its branch there, it is a dead mall.
Great Lakes Mall is a shopping mall in Mentor, Ohio on Mentor Avenue, approximately 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Cleveland. The anchor stores are Round 1 Entertainment, Dillard's, JCPenney, and Dick's Sporting Goods. There are two vacant anchor stores that were once Sears and Macy's. The first stores of the mall were opened January 17, 1961, as part of an early development of Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., owned by the Glazer–Marotta Company. Throughout the 1960s, the mall was expanded and enclosed. In 1988, a multi-year renovation occurred, which included replacing the flooring and adding a food court, and a subsequent renovation occurred in 2011. Olive Garden, BJ's Brewhouse, Hobby Lobby, Outback Steakhouse, Barnes & Noble and Atlas Cinemas Stadium 16 are located in the mall parking lot. The mall contains 1,249,574 sq ft (116,089 m2). On May 28, 2014, it was announced by Simon Property Group that they would transfer Great Lakes Mall to its new spin off Washington Prime Group. Washington Prime Group later became WP Glimcher and then back to Washington Prime Group. In 2015, Sears Holdings spun off 235 of its properties, including the Sears at Great Lakes Mall, into Seritage Growth Properties. Dillard's North closed in May 2017, consolidating the men and women's sections into one building; Sears closed in September 2017. Macy's closed in April 2021 due to a plan to close 46 stores nationwide.
Richmond Town Square was a super regional shopping mall known locally as 'Richmond' or 'Richmond Mall', located in Richmond Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, at the intersection of Richmond Road and Wilson Mills Road. Opening September 22, 1966 as Richmond Mall, developed by famous mall developer Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. Original anchors were Sears and JCPenney, alongside a Loews Theater and Woolworths. The mall included in-line tenants such as Richman Brothers, and Winkelman's.
Valley View Center is a former mall located at Interstate 635 and Preston Road in north Dallas, Texas, U.S. It is owned and managed by Dallas-based Beck Ventures. The mall was formerly home to anchor stores that were once JCPenney, Macy's, Sears, and Dillard's. The demolition of the mall was completed in May 2023.
One Bellevue Place is a regional shopping, dining, and entertainment complex in southwestern Nashville, Tennessee, specifically in the Bellevue neighborhood. Opened in 1990 as an enclosed regional shopping mall named Bellevue Center, it had capacity for over 90 stores on two floors totaling 848,545 square feet (78,832.4 m2). The mall itself opened in 1990, began showing signs of decline during the early 2000s recession, and closed in 2008. Two of its three anchor tenants continued to operate beyond the mall's closure, but both would eventually vacate the property as well. The entire structure, including the three adjacent anchor buildings and an outparcel, was demolished in 2015. A new mixed-use complex opened on the site in 2017.
Orlando Fashion Square is a split one-story, two-story indoor shopping mall located in Orlando, Florida. Opened in 1973, it features 79 stores in over one million square feet of shop space. The mall's anchor stores are Macy's, Floor & Decor, and Dillard's Clearance Center. Predating the mall's opening was a Sears department store opened in 1963; this store closed in 2016 and has been razed for redevelopment. JCPenney, another anchor store, closed in 2020. Other major tenants include Premiere Cinemas and Planet Fitness. The mall is managed by UP Development, Inc.
Cortana Mall was an enclosed shopping mall in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was at the intersection of Airline Highway and Florida Blvd. It was last owned by Moonbeam Equities of Las Vegas, Nevada. It opened in 1976 and was demolished in 2021.
The Raleigh Springs Mall was an enclosed shopping mall serving the city of Memphis, Tennessee, United States. The site is located on the north side of Memphis, on Austin Peay Hwy. just north of Interstate 40. It began construction in 1969 and opened two years later on August 11, 1971 as one of the city's first two shopping malls, owned and managed by the Edward J. DeBartolo corporation. The Raleigh Springs Mall originally featured about seventy stores and later featured a twelve-screen multiplex, with four anchor stores, formerly occupied by Sears, JCPenney, Goldsmith's and Dillard's. The theater closed in December 2011, Sears closed in April 2011, and the other three anchors closed in 2003. The mall property was won by the City of Memphis in multiple court challenges in favor to build a city Civic Center. The mall closed with 3 business still operating, City Trends, World Diamond Center, and a church.

DeSoto Square Mall was an enclosed shopping mall serving Bradenton, Florida, United States. It was built in 1973 and permanently closed on April 30, 2021. One lone anchor store, Hudson's Furniture, remains open.
