Eastland Mall is a defunct shopping mall in Columbus, Ohio. The mall opened February 14, 1968 and closed on December 27, 2022. [2] There are 4 vacant anchor stores that were once Lazarus, JCPenney, Sears, and Macy's (built as Kaufmann's). The mall is owned and managed by Eastland Mall Holdings, LLC. Despite having no anchor stores, the mall's interior was until recently thriving with many smaller businesses and its food court, unusual for a mall lacking anchors and thus having enough tenants to keep it from being a dead mall. It would, however, later succumb to that fate.
The mall was built in 1968 by Richard E. Jacobs group, who also developed Columbus's Northland and Westland Malls. [3] It was the first enclosed shopping mall in Columbus. [1] As with the other two "directional" Jacobs malls in Columbus, Eastland's original anchors included J. C. Penney, Sears, and Lazarus. [4]
Although Eastland itself was a single-story mall, all three of its original anchor stores were constructed with two stories of retail space. The Sears store closed off its upper level at some point during the 1980s.
With the closure and subsequent demolition of Northland in 2002, Eastland became the oldest shopping mall in the Columbus metro area.
The mall remained under Jacobs' ownership until Glimcher Realty Trust bought it in December 2003. The property became Glimcher's second mall in Columbus, following Polaris Fashion Place. Among Glimcher's first moves with the property was to add a fourth anchor, Kaufmann's. This Kaufmann's was the first in a "lifestyle" prototype featuring a smaller floor plan with wider aisles. [5] The same year, the Lazarus store became Lazarus-Macy's. [6] Macy's moved from the former Lazarus to the former Kaufmann's in 2006 when the Macy's chain purchased Kaufmann's then-parent company. [7] Three years later, Glimcher proposed to demolish the former Lazarus-Macy's building for a new J. C. Penney, while dividing Penney's existing store among new tenants. [8] However, as of 2013 the former Lazarus-Macy's building remains both standing and vacant.
Glimcher defaulted on the mall's mortgage loan in 2012 and turned the property over via a deed in lieu of foreclosure to the lender, a CMBS trust that was serviced by LNR Property, in August 2014. [9] [10]
Ever since the old Lazarus building closed down and was left vacant in 2006, the mall, and Hamilton Road corridor, began a steady decline, despite being a major shopping center up until the mid-2010s.
In March 2015, the mall was reportedly sold for $9.25 million. [11] Earlier that year in January, J. C. Penney announced the closure of its existing store. It closed in May 2015. [12]
On January 4, 2017, Macy's announced that its Eastland Mall store would close. [13] The store closed in March 2017, leaving Sears as Eastland's only remaining anchor.
On June 6, 2017, Sears announced that its Eastland Mall store would close by early September, [14] leaving the mall entirely without anchor stores.
Conditions at the mall declined drastically in its final years of operation, resulting in several health and safety code violations. In 2019, City Code Enforcement had begun issuing violations to Eastland Mall Holdings LLC for poor maintenance of the parking lot, structural issues, and zoning noncompliance. [15] As these issues persisted and the mall continued to deteriorate, city officials had filed a case against Eastland Mall Holdings LLC in April 2021. [16] In the court case held in June 2022, Eastland Mall LLC property manager Nihal Weerasinghe had admitted to various maintenance issues, including up to 1,200 potholes in the parking lot. [15] On June 13, 2022, Judge Stephanie Mingo officially declared Eastland Mall a public nuisance and ordered the mall's owners to make repairs to bring Eastland to compliance. The case went back to court on September 22. [17]
Eastland Mall was slated to close on December 31, 2022, but after a water line break flooded parts of the mall on December 26, the mall closed four days early. The City of Columbus began soliciting proposals to redevelop the Eastland area on March 3, 2023. [18] Out of 13 applicants, the city on June 19 chose the company MKSK to redevelop Eastland and granted them $850,000.
Century III Mall was an abandoned enclosed shopping mall located along Route 51 in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It operated from 1979 to 2019 — a period of almost 40 years.
Eastland Mall was a shopping mall in Charlotte, North Carolina. The center opened on July 30, 1975, as the then-largest mall in North Carolina with three anchor department stores, Belk, J.C. Penney, and Ivey's. A Sears, Roebuck and Company store joined four years later. The mall was owned by Glimcher Realty Trust and the City of Charlotte. Glimcher requested the mall be put into receivership due to heavy debt, and there were reports of the mall entering foreclosure. LNR sold the interior space in the mall to Boxer Properties of Houston for $2 million. It ceased operations on June 30, 2010, and was purchased by the city of Charlotte from Boxer Properties, and the owners of the vacant anchors in hopes of selling it to a developer.
WestShore Plaza is a shopping mall located in the Westshore business district of Tampa, Florida, developed by Albert L. Manley of Boston, MA. WestShore Plaza was opened in 1967 and was touted as Tampa's first shopping center that was fully air-conditioned. WestShore houses many specialty shops including Francesca's Collection, LOFT, New Balance, H&M, Old Navy, Sunglass Hut, and more. The property is owned and managed by Washington Prime Group.
Polaris Fashion Place is a two level shopping mall and surrounding retail plaza serving Columbus, Ohio, United States. The mall, owned locally by Washington Prime Group, is located off Interstate 71 on Polaris Parkway in Delaware County just to the north of the boundary between Delaware and Franklin County. The mall features five anchor stores, Saks Fifth Avenue, Von Maur, Macy's, JCPenney, and a combination of Dick's Sporting Goods/Public Lands, as well as an outdoor promenade which includes Dave & Buster's and Barnes & Noble.
Ross Park Mall is a shopping mall located in Ross Township, Pennsylvania, north of Pittsburgh. The mall features JCPenney, Macy's, Nordstrom and Dick's House of Sport.
Westland Mall is a demolished 860,000-square-foot (80,000 m2) shopping center located at the intersection of U.S. Route 40 and Interstate 270 on the west side of Columbus, Ohio. In November 2012, the majority of the mall closed, and the last anchor closed in 2017. A mixed use development is planned, and demolition began around August 2023.
The Mall at Tuttle Crossing is an enclosed shopping mall located in northwest Columbus, Ohio. It has a Dublin, Ohio mailing address, but it is in the Columbus city limits. It was developed by a joint venture of Taubman Centers and the Georgetown Company and opened on July 24, 1997. In 2021, the mall was reported to be heading towards foreclosure. The anchor stores are Macy's, Scene75 Entertainment Center, and JCPenney. There is one vacant store that was once Sears.

Richmond Town Square was a super regional shopping mall known locally as 'Richmond' or 'Richmond Mall', located in Richmond Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, at the intersection of Richmond Road and Wilson Mills Road. Opening September 22, 1966 as Richmond Mall, developed by famous mall developer Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. Original anchors were Sears and JCPenney, alongside a Loews Theater and Woolworths. The mall included in-line tenants such as Richman Brothers, and Winkelman's.
Burlington Center was a shopping mall located in Burlington Township, New Jersey. It was built by The Rouse Company of Columbia, Maryland. Its anchors were Macy's, JCPenney, and Sears.
Northland Mall was a shopping mall located on the north side of Columbus, Ohio, at the intersection of Morse Road and Karl Road. It opened in 1964 as an open-air shopping center. Northland was the first of the four directionally-named shopping hubs in Columbus, along with Eastland, Westland, and Southland. Though popular through the 1990s, three new shopping centers were completed in the late 1990s and early 2000s that took businesses and shoppers away from Northland. It closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2004. The site has subsequently been redeveloped as Northland Village, a multi-use complex containing government offices, retail stores and the Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center.
Nittany Mall is an enclosed regional shopping mall in College Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, serving the State College area. It is located at the intersections of Route 150 and Route 26, one mile off the I-99 corridor. It is uniquely situated within four miles of the Pennsylvania State University, allowing the mall to attract both area residents as well as college students. Military Circle Mall, known as The Gallery at Military Circle Mall from 2002 to 2015, is a soon to be demolished abandoned enclosed shopping mall in Norfolk, Virginia. The mall opened in 1970. In October 2016 the Virginia Beach City Council rejected plans for an oceanfront arena. This vote triggered discussions for the Military Circle area to include the construction of a 20,000 seat multi purpose arena. However, rising city debt and other priorities appear to negate any near-term plans for a new arena to the area. The anchor stores are Ross Dress for Less, Optima Health, and Movement Mortgage. There are 3 vacant anchor stores that were once Cinemark, Sears, and Macy's. The mall permanently closed to the public on January 31, 2023.
