Rapture (Garo: Rimdogittanga) is a 2023 Garo language feature film directed by Dominic Sangma. [1] [2] [3] It was screened in Shillong at U Soso Tham Auditorium from 7-11 November 2024 in collaboration with the Arts and Culture Department and the Fraternity Art Cine Entertainment Shillong (FACES). [4] [5] [6]
The film is set in a village in the Garo hills. Every night, the village is gripped by the fear of child-kidnappers, ever since the church prophesized that an apocalyptic darkness would come, lasting 80 days. For a ten-year-old boy who suffers from night blindness, the village has never been more terrifying. [7]
The film was invited to India's Film Bazaar, won a grant for script development from the International Film Festival Rotterdam's Hubert Bals Fund, participated in Boost NL and was selected for La Fabrique Cinema at Cannes. Xu took part in Talents Tokyo and Sangma at Berlinale Talents. Funding also came in from Vision Sud Est, Switzerland, and Doha Film Institute. [8]
Rapture made its World Premiere at the 76th Locarno Film Festival on 10 August 2023 in the Concorso Cineasti del presente section. It had its French premiere at the Festival des 3 Continents, Nantes on 15 May 2024. [9] The film was premiered at various film festivals, which include Sydney Film Festival 2024, Busan International Film Festival 2023, International Film Festival of Kerala 2023, 23rd Pune International Film Festival. [10] [11] [12]
The film was released in over 100 theatres across France in May 2024. The release was announced by Capricci Cinema in collaboration with Anna Films, Shillong. [13]
Kunal Kothari of India Forums reviewed, "Dominic Sangma's Rapture catapults through multiple phases ranging from darkness to glowing hope, but mostly doing so through the lens of Kasan. Kasan's dream solidifies that Sangma is actually willing to convey, and he does so with precision in spite of some gaps in between." [14] Savina Petkova of Cineuropa wrote for Locarno Film Festival, "It's rare for European audiences to get a chance to become acquainted with a Garo-language film that toes the line of a genre such as a social thriller, while also delivering a humanistic message against preconceived fear and prejudice towards the other. Rapture is one such example that captures the subtle contradictions that drive human nature and society as a structure. There is always a choice: to use darkness as an excuse, or to embrace it in order to make room for the light." [15] Debanjan Dhar of Outlook observed, "The film is essentially a disquieting morality tale, a fable about a Garo village caught in a stranglehold of heightened fear and insular, agenda-driven absolutist narratives, which darkens as it progresses, both literally and metaphorically." [16]
Abha Anindita of The Shillong Times commented, "From the outset, Rapture carries a contemplative tone, opening with the thought-provoking line, Either it is night or we don't need the light. This line sets the stage for the film, reflecting both literal and metaphorical darkness; recurring theme Sangma uses to explore complex human emotions and unseen fears." [17] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV Movies opined, "Rapture is a piercing parable for our times and the village that the film plays out in is a microcosm of the larger world - it could be a city, a province or an entire nation - where communities commit atrocities on the pretext of ensuring peace and asserting solidarity of those that have the numbers to defend their acts of excessive force."
