Reality and Fantasy is the second studio album by Italian jazz singer Raphael Gualazzi,composed,produced and arranged by Gualazzi himself, [2] it was released in Italy on February 16,2011 on Sugar Music.
The album features guest artists such as Italian trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso,Ferdinando Arnò,who co-produced the lead single "Follia d'amore",Vince Mendoza,James F. Reynolds,Pete Glenister and French DJ Gilles Peterson. [3] [4] As of June 2012,the album had sold more than 100,000 copies and it was certified platinum by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry. [5] In October 2011,a special edition of the album was released in Italy,including bonus tracks and an additional DVD featuring the "Live Documentary",recorded on June 24,2011 during Gualazzi's concert at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome. [6] A new edition of the album was released in France by Blue Note Records in September 2012. [5] [7]
The first single from the album,"Follia d'amore",was the winner of the 61st Sanremo Music Festival in the newcomer artists' section and also won the Critics' "Mia Martini" Award for newcomers. [8] It was chosen by a specific jury among the participants at the Sanremo Festival to be the Italian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf,Germany. [9] [10] It was the first Italian entry at the Eurovision Song Contest in 14 years since 1997. The song,performed in both Italian and English with the translated title "Madness of Love",came in second place. [11] Other singles from the album were "A Three Second Breath", [12] "Calda estate (dove sei)", [13] "Love Goes Down Slow" [14] and "Zuccherino dolce". [15]

The Sanremo Music Festival, officially the Italian Song Festival, is the most popular Italian song contest and awards ceremony, held annually in the city of Sanremo, Liguria. It is the longest-running annual TV music competition in the world on a national level and it is also the basis and inspiration for the annual Eurovision Song Contest.
Italy has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 47 times since making its debut at the first contest in 1956. It was one of the seven countries that competed at the first contest, which took inspiration from the Sanremo Music Festival. Italy competed at the contest without interruption until 1980, discontinuing its participation on a number of occasions during the 1980s and 1990s. After a 13-year absence starting in 1998, the country returned to the contest in 2011. Italy has won the contest three times, along with an additional 15 top-five finishes. Italy hosted the contest in Naples (1965), Rome (1991) and Turin (2022).

The show, presented by Fabio Fazio with Italian comedy actress Luciana Littizzetto, featured two different competitions. The Big Artists section included 14 established Italian artists, competing with two songs each. During the semi-finals, a song for each artist was eliminated as a result of votes received by public and journalists. On 16 February 2013, Marco Mengoni, based on a combination of televotes and points awarded by a jury, was announced the winner of the competition, with his song "L'essenziale". The Newcomers' section featured eight songs performed by debuting or little known artists. On 13 and 14 February 2013, music journalists and televotes determined the four finalists of the competition. The final winner of the Newcomers' section, Antonio Maggio with the song "Mi servirebbe sapere", was announced on 15 February 2013, based on points awarded by a jury and on televotes.

Competing artists were split in two different sections—Big Artists and Newcomers. The Big Artists section included 14 established Italian artists. During the first and the second night of the show, each act performed two songs, and only one song per act was allowed to continue the competition, as a result of votes received by public and journalists. After the third night, Riccardo Sinigallia's entry, "Prima di andare via", was disqualified for being performed during a concert preceding the competition. During the final night, Arisa's "Controvento" was announced as the winning song for the Big Artists section of the contest. The Newcomers' section featured eight songs performed by debuting or little known artists. The winning entry, Rocco Hunt's "Nu juorno buono", was announced during the semi-final of the contest.
