Brigadier Rebecca Mpagi, is a Ugandan military officer and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, who serves as the Director of Personnel and Administration in the UPDF Air Force. [1] She is credited as the first female in Uganda to qualify as a military aircraft maintenance engineer. [2] [3]

Background and education

Mpagi was born in the Buganda Region of Uganda circa 1956, to Yunia Nakibuuka Mpagi and Charles William Mpagi. She was the 11th born out of 14 children. She attended Kasanje Primary School before transferring to Jungo Junior School, in Wakiso District, where she completed her primary schooling. [2]

She studied at Nabisunsa Girls' Secondary School for her O-Level studies. She then completed her A-Level education at Kololo High School, where she obtained a High School Diploma, in 1974. [2]

She studied at Kianda Secretarial College, Nairobi, graduating with a Diploma in Secretarial Studies. In 1978, she was admitted to the East African Civil Aviation Academy in Soroti, graduating as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, in 1982. She has taken a number of military courses and training in guidance and counselling. [2]

In 2019, Mpagi was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Zoe Life Theological Collège, based in Collingdale, Pennsylvania, United States. [4]

Career

Her first job was as a secretary at the lawyer's office in the Eastern Ugandan city of Mbale. However, the lawyer who employed her was murdered during the Uganda–Tanzania War (October 1978 until June 1979), which removed Idi Amin from power. That is when she enrolled in flight school. [2]

She joined the National Resistance Army in 1986. After basic training, she gradually rose through the ranks, from Second Lieutenant (1988), Lieutenant (1990), Captain (1999), Major (2002) and Lieutenant Colonel (2008). As of June 2012, she was the Director of Women's Affairs at the Directorate of Women's Affairs at UPDF Headquarters, at Mbuya, a suburb of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. [2] Since then, she has been promoted to a full Colonel and assigned as Director of Personnel and Administration at the UPDF Air Force, based in Entebbe. [1]

On 28 March 2020, she was promoted from the rank of Colonel to that of Brigadier. [5]

Leopold Eric Kyanda, is a Major General in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). He currently serves as the Joint Chief of Staff of the UPDF, effective 24 June 2021. He replaced Lieutenant General Joseph Musanyufu who was redeployed to the civil service.

James Nakibus Lakara, commonly known as Nakibus Lakara, is a Ugandan Lieutenant General in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Since June 2016, he has been the commander of the Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre based in Jinja in the Eastern Region of Uganda. From April 2015 until June 2016, he served as the deputy force commander of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) and was in charge of logistical support. From July 2013 until April 2015, he served as the commanding officer of the UPDF 3rd Division, based in Moroto.

Lieutenant General John Mugume is a senior Ugandan military officer. He currently serves as the General Manager of Defence Forces Shop Limited, the duty-free commissary of the UPDF.

Lieutenant General Charles Lwanga Lutaaya, is a senior Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He is the Commander of the UPDF Air Force. Before that, he was the Deputy Commander of the UPDF Air Force.

Colonel Annette Nkalubo, is a senior Ugandan military officer. She is the second highest-ranking military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).

Colonel Edith Nakalema, is a Ugandan military officer, who graduated in August 2018 from the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, in Watchfield, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, where she had been admitted in 2017.

Major General Steven Sabiiti Muzeyi, is a Ugandan military officer and police officer, who served as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) of the Uganda Police Force, the second-highest rank in that branch of Uganda's government, effective 4 March 2018 to Tuesday 16 December 2020. He replaced Martin Okoth Ochola, who was promoted to Inspector General of Police. Immediately prior to his assignment as Deputy IGP, Sabiiti, at the rank of Brigadier, served as the Commander of the Military Police of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Sabiiti was replaced with Maj Gen Paul Loketch. On Friday 5, Maj Gen Sabiiti Muzeyi was appointed General Manager Luwero Industries, a subsidiary of National Enterprise Corporation( NEC).

Major General Don William Nabasa, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He currently serves as the Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), an elite unit that is responsible for the security of the President of Uganda, and that of traditional cultural leaders and vital national installations, as well as the country's oil fields. Naomi Karungi was a Ugandan helicopter pilot who, at the time of her death, served as the Squadron Commander of Augusta Bell Squadron in the UPDF Air Force.
